Spoilers

With movies, a bit of information can spoil a picture for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, like "Bruce Willis was dead all along". Plot giveaways.

How about for music? Has anybody ever revealed anything to you in advance that spoiled your enjoyment of a record? Or can you come up with spoilers for records that I can use on other people?

Bruce Willis was dead all along

In real life? Oh how I dream.

I guess it's a case where you can't really describe the 'plot' of a record, though, isn't it? Unless you want to say something about how the lead figure in Operation: Mindcrime is sent to kill a nun or something. You can go into a movie knowing what's going to happen plotwise, but you can't totally judge a record until it is heard -- though perhaps others' preconceptions on what a record is or sounds like can have an influence you have to kick against.

It depends on what kind of music it is. Obviously straight ahead pop can't be ruined, but what about surprises in the song? How about telling someone 'watch out for the sudden noise in sonic youth track xxx at 3:32'. Or lyrically, 'this song is so great, but then you find out he's singing about a guy!' etc...

yes. it was "the man who murdered love" on "wasp star (apple venus 2)" by xtc and someone on chalkhills - the xtc mailing list - delighted in describing his promo copy in great detail to us, especially the bit where andy suddenly shouts "it's the middle of the song!" before he goes into the "i'm guilty! i'm guilty!" bit and it really did spoil hugely the fun of the moment when i finally heard it...

as did when someone told me bruce willis was dead. bastard. that was the xtc list as well. must say something...

I like to be surprised by my favorite bands. Kid A was partially ruined for me because I heard so much about the more abstract songs and the idm influence before I actually heard the album. Plus so many people were saying it was their best work yet. Overall, my expectations were ridiculously high and I was rather underwhelmed when I finally heard it.

haha

I got pissed at my college roommate for telling me that there was an unlisted Nirvana song at the end of No Alternative. He told me by telling me how surprising and cool it was.
