Go here and listen. Why oh why did this album get such a delayed release? It sounds like the missing piece of this last year. Also, does anyone have thoughts on "Why Don't We Fall In Love" by Amerie?

& Can we expect more of this sorta thing?

Nivea = still a silly choice of name.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 23 August 2002 19:53 (twenty-three years ago)

nivea is kind of not so good. she has the silly
name, too. i've heard 'don't mess with the radio'
and 'down like that.' kind of medium good.

amerie is-- i'm not sure. in the interview on tv
she was talking about aaliyah. she really liked
aaliyah. and we should live everyday to the fullest.
so, the obvious comparison, i guess.

'why don't we fall in love' is pretty great. the
beats are hard! hard! for real. they're hard. and
she can sing pretty good. it's a pretty song. same
with the rest. 'i just died' sounds just like the
one aaliyah song. the backing track bit does. the
production sounds exactly the same. some song from
around the middle of the last album.

but, the whole thing isn't really new. nivea isn't
anything special. amerie might be. but it's not
really a new thing.

Pop Playground: R&B Roundup 2002

Just a one-off for now, but I might do it again. Puts together lots of my recent thorts on the state of pop music in a sort of mad rush of typing.

So I just heard Nivea's "Don't Mess With My Man" today. Goddamn, it's good. One of my favorite singles of the year.

Yancey (ystrickler), Thursday, 21 November 2002 18:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm certain that Nivea's name can be blamed on her mother.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 21 November 2002 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

[Amerie's "I just died" is really lovely, too.]

Amerie's album only has one producer. This is so weird.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 21 November 2002 19:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Also like no overt hip-hop touches but a full on sensibility for it.

who is it??

scott pl. (scott pl.), Thursday, 21 November 2002 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

never mind, I looked it up -- rich harrison, also worked with k. rowland and mary j., and wrote all of the songs on the amerie record, too.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Thursday, 21 November 2002 19:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Not that I have the album, but the assorted mp3s of Amerie that I've got do have this pleasing sort of consistency to them. It's like the Kelis albums or the last En Vogue - it's fun to hear the same people try out different styles and sounds while coming from basically the same mindset - or at least it is in the context of a genre where this rarely happens.

'I Just Died' is amazing - the drums clicks an chimes, the verses feels like she's on the edge of losing the tune but never does, 'so softly, so softly', subtle and supple.

'Laundremat' may be the greatest song that anyone ever wrote and definitely the best song anyone ever sung - R Kelly playing a guy called Keith, the listing of laundremat paraphernalia fetching up as seemingly random despite the clue in the song's TITLE, I still haven't figure out what it all means, call and response, what a brush off, the way it seems to want to speed up in the chorus and how it can't decide what speed it wants to go at near the end (is it speeding up, or is just the illusion of the cascading drums and words?).

(Also heard another song yesterday which is amazing 'Ching Ching', Miss Jade feat. Nelly. Wow.)

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Friday, 18 August 2006 12:15 (nineteen years ago)

There are so many great Nivea tracks. "Runaway" and "Don't Mess With Radio" and "25 Reasons" and "Laundrymat" and above all "Parking Lot".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 18 August 2006 12:16 (nineteen years ago)

the fact you forgot/didn't bother to mention 'OK' there suggests to me that all tracks MUST be great.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 18 August 2006 12:17 (nineteen years ago)

"OK" is good, but a little bit below the aforementioned tracks in quality!

I wrote a hagiography on Nivea for the Back & Forth blog if yr interested Steve.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 18 August 2006 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

Goddamn, 'Love Hurts' is really good; I know about three other songs from this chick and I need to get her first three albums like now.
I like her attitude; she's hella funny!
