They smell like pee.
And their mommas dress them funny.
And they're ugly, too.

This criticism thing is EASY!

i do. sean carruthers gave me a journey rec when i went to toronto (a habit of his, since he gave you a couple of 80s heavy metal recs when we met in toronto).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 24 August 2002 10:43 (twenty-three years ago)

sometimes not being able to play your instruments is the pathway to heretofore untold genius. most of the time, though, it means you CAN'T FUCKING PLAY and should therefore NOT.

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 24 August 2002 10:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Its hard to slag off british post-punk. I've enjoyed what i've heard of it but it lasted, what, two years. Whereas hair metal (?) lasted far longer, was far more successful (and was thereffore everywhere, which means the ppl who didn't enjoy it could slag it off and get all reactionary abt it).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 24 August 2002 10:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Besides, of course I know Journey.

ANY WAY YOU WANT IT, THAT'S THE WAY YOU NEED IT, ANY WAY YOU WANT IT ner-ner ner-ner ner-ner-nah-nah-NER!

I don't find that my old post-punk favorites have held up very well, at least not to my ears. I would say that it was particularly weak vocally. It's kind of dreary stuff in general, isn't it?

I haven't been listening to it much though, and to be honest I don't always know what counts as post-punk and what doesn't, since so many post-punk things can probably find a home under another label.

New "The British don't know Journey" answers.
And in that, they shoiuld be grateful.

Lord Custos Alpha (Lord Custos Alpha), Saturday, 24 August 2002 20:19 (twenty-three years ago)

It was great stuff for the alienated 13-16 year old I was during that period of time. It seemed very exciting and new, but now, although I can still hear good things about it, it's not what I am looking for.

DeRayMi, Sunday, 25 August 2002 14:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Debbie Harry wore too much make-up, and looked about 40.

Is that good enough?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 25 August 2002 14:31 (twenty-three years ago)

um...that it can refer to ANYTHING after 1978 depending on who you're talking to? I've heard the "postpunk" label applied to the likes of the Cure and Bauhaus, when to me it refers more to the British indie stuff that came out between 1978-1982 (and some of the US stuff like Mission of Burma as well).

mike, Sunday, 25 August 2002 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, but can't any genre refer to just about anything? How about punk? Maybe we need the OED to weigh in on this!

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Sunday, 25 August 2002 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

It seems to me that early Cure was post-punk. How different is a song like "All Cats Are Gray" from a typical Joy Division song or from Echo & the Bunnymen's "Over the Wall"? Didn't the Cure at least start off as an indie band? I'm so confused by musical nomenclature.

DeRayMi, Sunday, 25 August 2002 15:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Well it's hard to generalize, especially as I happen to love this era, but Wreckless Eric really could not sing.

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 25 August 2002 16:51 (twenty-three years ago)

The following bands will always be linked in my mind as belonging to the same "scene":

The Cure
New Order
Echo and the Bunnymen
Siouxsie and the Banshees
U2
The Smiths

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 26 August 2002 13:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan, for me U2 looks out of place here (and this is not another swipe at U2) for the simple reason that by around 1982/83, I was hearing them on commercial radio in the U.S., but the other five bands were all strictly college radio material.

DeRayMi, Monday, 26 August 2002 13:38 (twenty-three years ago)

The Cure's place in the early post-punk pantheon is surely cemented by their original Easy Cure stuff, if not Boys Don't Cry.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 26 August 2002 14:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw the pre trio post punk Thompson Twins free improv collective twice (twice I ask you). Finding something negative to say about post punk is kust too easy. I don't like Skank Blocl Bologna either, and Prag Vec were rubbish.

sandy blair, Monday, 26 August 2002 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
The Skritti Politti singer's vocal similarity to Paul Weller makes it too clear that Skank Bloc Bologna would have sit quite easily on Extras. Not that this is much of a criticism, but it's not exactly post anything.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 16 January 2004 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

It birthed a lot of awful shit.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 16 January 2004 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

On the other hand, Liliput.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 16 January 2004 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't get this. Why would the British not know Journey?
