or maybe 2003 actually idk

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Friday, 4 February 2011 00:01 (fourteen years ago)

You realise that no-one else is even gonna post in this. I haven't heard the Mr V track yet I don't think, who's the original artist?

Traktor Remix sounds like 2001 to me, kinda Genius Cru era.

Tim F, Friday, 4 February 2011 00:06 (fourteen years ago)

i know, i know. sometimes the mask slips and i fleetingly think hey now, maybe they're not all tedious american cunts and tin-eared stans of nocturnal gastropod molluscs.

less messy than getting the razors out again tho tbf.

r|t|c, Friday, 4 February 2011 00:32 (fourteen years ago)

suggest neither of us vote btw, maybe i can break al's 112 record here.

r|t|c, Friday, 4 February 2011 00:35 (fourteen years ago)

anyway assume you've got images off? - the mr v (aka unheralded protean grimist and basslinist virgo) is a buzzsaw bashment remix of mighty moe's 'dangerous'. it's fun! all the same i don't think it will shift your delinquent allegiance. (mikey d hopping on the keys for the mj cole jazzy bridge is extremely hard to resist, besides everything else.)

what do these two tunes all mean though, i keep wondering; it might be a cul-de-sac but it was still happily driven into.

r|t|c, Friday, 4 February 2011 00:47 (fourteen years ago)

I'm at work, will try to remember to check these when I get home so I can say what i would have voted for (but not actually vote).

it might be a cul-de-sac but it was still happily driven into.

sometimes a nice house in a loop-de-loop street sounds like a pleasant way to end it.

Tim F, Friday, 4 February 2011 01:51 (fourteen years ago)

indeed, where better a nice suburban base for a son of a loop-de-loop era.

r|t|c, Friday, 4 February 2011 02:04 (fourteen years ago)

not gonna check but i think the moe tune came somewhere later in that dj q set from a few weeks back?

could salvage this thread for general purpose dj q hurrahs i suppose. the old school section on his latest is a total delight!

r|t|c, Friday, 4 February 2011 02:11 (fourteen years ago)

Yes we need a thread for this kind of thing that isn't confined to #based-line

Tim F, Friday, 4 February 2011 03:27 (fourteen years ago)

The "Dangerous" remix is excellent!

But in some ways I'm a bit over self-consciously sickly bassline basslines, so that might tip me toward "Traktor".

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

NB. My uncast vote would have gone to "Traktor".

r|t|c, Friday, 1 July 2011 09:49 (fourteen years ago)

07 - Wideboys Ft. Sway & McLean - Shopaholic (Future Garage Mix)

this mix is a jam, dudes fucked up with the single

although tbf i am never not FLABBERGASTED when i hear what the original 'traktor' is supposed to sound like, it's just preposterous

r|t|c, Friday, 1 July 2011 09:52 (fourteen years ago)

btw how bassliney is that mix? lots of bassline names i recognise but are they all doing funky now?

lex pretend, Friday, 1 July 2011 09:58 (fourteen years ago)

nah it's safe to come out now, i pronounce funky dead.

e1d is a bassline dj usually but tbf these guys have never seen the difference, and when you listen to the mix neither do you - i'd say 95% is all technically straight ukg as conceived but bassline is absolutely its spirit animal, to use deej's handy phrase.

i dunno, i see it just as another facet of the new mishmash basically. dj q's 1xtra shows are the crucible but if you're not partial to 3 hours of streamed fun then this slightly inferior recent mix cd might give good flavour:

http://www.basslineblog.co.uk/?p=1379

r|t|c, Friday, 1 July 2011 10:17 (fourteen years ago)

i mean like for instance how do you neatly pigeonhole 'boo you'? best to bask in just calling it garage until things sadly ratify

r|t|c, Friday, 1 July 2011 10:21 (fourteen years ago)

"instrumental grime" is such an impotent term at this point, commentators need to wake up to the fact that whether they sound like themselves or crossbreed or not bassline and grime are part of the one same cheap n' cheerful nu-ukg habitus

maybe i'll start telling people i listen to uk treble

r|t|c, Friday, 1 July 2011 10:22 (fourteen years ago)

it was funky i was hoping for and the bassline i was fearing, lol

lex pretend, Friday, 1 July 2011 10:22 (fourteen years ago)

yeah the bassline spectrum's too wide to fear as a thing though. the only obstacle is in taking the time to nose out the limply deracinated truffles, if of course you're that way inclined

24 - TS7 Ft. Sarah Etheridge - Nothing Left (Original Mix)

i'm sure kingdom would find this one of use for instance, despite what it's rubbing shoulders with

r|t|c, Friday, 1 July 2011 10:31 (fourteen years ago)

slightly unrelated (perhaps....) but talking of the wideboys i have also been listening to the completely and mesmerisingly disgusting ministry ADDICTED TO BASS 2011 mixed by them

http://www.ministryofsound.com/shop/product/music/32507/addicted-to-bass-2011/

it is kinda jawdropping stuff i think really

r|t|c, Friday, 1 July 2011 10:40 (fourteen years ago)

sometimes a nice house in a loop-de-loop street sounds like a pleasant way to end it.

bamcquern, Friday, 1 July 2011 18:01 (fourteen years ago)

The E1D mix is great! So I guess this means 2-step revivalism (not future garage) really is a thing?

Also I think I'm gonna adopt "uk treble" as well.

06 - Todd Edwards - Head Held High

Had not heard this before. It's a cut up of Jonatha Brooke's "Paris"! This is astonishing to me.

Tim F, Saturday, 2 July 2011 09:49 (fourteen years ago)

i don't know who that is! a tidbit i can offer in return though is 8th note 'wasnt it the 4x4" is cutting up kate bush.

don't suppose you saw me reviving the todd thread the other day btw?

the godlike genius of Todd Edwards

r|t|c, Saturday, 2 July 2011 11:12 (fourteen years ago)

even if 2step revivalism might be a thing i dunno if i wanna call it that yet tbh; happy to stick with the "cheap n cheerful habitus" qualifier for now i think. just following the energy as ever...

royal-t's fact mix is certainly a thing though, have you heard that yet tim?

r|t|c, Saturday, 2 July 2011 11:22 (fourteen years ago)

and if i'd said it before i'll say it again: always listen to dj q! it is scientifically proven to improve life by 600%.

r|t|c, Saturday, 2 July 2011 11:27 (fourteen years ago)

18 - YSE Ft. Frank H Carter III - Guessing Games (DIY's Got Me Guessin' Dub)

^ existence of this is possibly quite interesting - it's new and by karl brown from tuff jam. afaik he hasn't been one of these guys on the denial circuit over the years so you kinda have to wonder what made him bother, is it just a giggle or something in the air?

r|t|c, Saturday, 2 July 2011 11:38 (fourteen years ago)

(it's timelessly gr8 too)

^ and how bad do you wish all funky sounded like this?

r|t|c, Saturday, 2 July 2011 11:53 (fourteen years ago)

even if 2step revivalism might be a thing i dunno if i wanna call it that yet tbh; happy to stick with the "cheap n cheerful habitus" qualifier for now i think. just following the energy as ever...

No I do feel this, getting that specific kinda narrows its options and codifies the rules, it's more fun as a kind of ecumenical counter to generalised blackdownisation (though, and this is relevant to the point anyways, I love how this music's idea of 2-step basically seems to be pop remixes circa late 2000 - sweet metallic "Show Me Love" basslines, stiff but frisky beats, who the fuck is El-B?).

Will get on the Royal T today.

Re Paleface - also "Blackberry Juice"! "What a ting, what a ting, the man wants to buy me a ring."

Tim F, Saturday, 2 July 2011 22:52 (fourteen years ago)

13 - KCAT - Live

Had wondered what she'd been up to after that minor bit of chart-bothering in '08 (charmingly nicking bits of Adamski's "Killer", apparently).

etc, Sunday, 3 July 2011 08:06 (fourteen years ago)

etc! If you haven't already check the Mike Delinquent's remix of KCat's "Epileptic", which (a) is a barnstormer, (b) amusingly interpolates "Another Brick in the Wall", and (c) far from being built on metaphor, is in fact a fairly handy pocket guide summation of the social trauma of suffering from epilepsy.

a tidbit i can offer in return though is 8th note 'wasnt it the 4x4" is cutting up kate bush.

I listened to this again and... really?

14 - Chemical Brothers - Swoon (Bee Q & Unique Remix)

I think this might be my favourite tune on this right now. Such a perfect intense concentration of plasticky post-"Flowers" good vibes.

Tim F, Sunday, 3 July 2011 10:31 (fourteen years ago)

ah right my mistake... kinda. it's less obv on the 4x4 dub

http://soundcloud.com/42tf-recordings/8th-note-wasnt-it-42tf016-out

r|t|c, Sunday, 3 July 2011 11:27 (fourteen years ago)

good thing i forbid myself to be a betting man cos i was absolutely 100% certain 'epileptic' was going on your 2k10 trax thread

r|t|c, Sunday, 3 July 2011 11:31 (fourteen years ago)

It was gonna be! But I briefly forgot it when I completed my belated round-up last month. Also I was consciously trying to restrict the amount of uk funky uk treble I wrote about as I didn't want to set off the usual complaints about 17 hour radio sets and the like.

Tim F, Sunday, 3 July 2011 11:35 (fourteen years ago)

Also given Delinquent had already abandoned syncopated-funky-bassline for fullblown 2-step it was like the moment had passed.

Tim F, Sunday, 3 July 2011 11:39 (fourteen years ago)

SERIOUSLY THIS MIX

r|t|c, Monday, 18 July 2011 12:51 (fourteen years ago)

fascinating the way the royal-t mix folds in bassline's 90s dance undertow; with something like the toddla t vs dj q or the new brand of sunship cheese say it comes out as part of a kisstory of uk clubbing lineage, whereas the way royal-t phrases it in grime's juvenile delinquency it takes on a kind of cheeky sonic the hedgehog/sega mega drive nostalgia, way housier and more street than original london grime's utopian sentimentalist nintendoism

(21. Royal-T & P Money – 1UP

I quite like "Bax" but surprised you're posting here rather than the funky thread (mind you cannot relisten here to confirm my mental categorisation).

Obv it sounds best with Rankin' on top.

OMG that gif.

Agreed, this sounds exciting and (for you) vindicating.

Tim F, Wednesday, 10 August 2011 21:15 (fourteen years ago)

haha you know you've probably gone too far when you feel gently ribbed by someone agreeing with you.

the clips sound pretty great, although as with all sequels it'd be foolish to expect much more than a banging celebratory tribute to the first rather than anything approaching its still-unearthly occult power. such a slam dunk of a postscript tho, 5 years on!

everyone seems to be darkly hinting at a super special guest producer on it as well, i'm trying to work out who's big enough of a deal. #thankyoubasedtodd?

r|t|c, Thursday, 11 August 2011 09:11 (fourteen years ago)

i don't even listen to tropical 1 that much tbh, maybe once a year? but that one time is like a seance. in my inevitable rambling descent into marcelloblivion i should like to do a 33⅓ book on it someday probably.

two weeks pass...

Tropical 2 is great! Everything is excellent and DJ Q esp. fits right in. But my favourite is still JME, still sounds like music beamed in from another galaxy entirely.

Tim F, Monday, 29 August 2011 11:54 (fourteen years ago)

oh good, i was meaning to bump this thread but i didn't wanna harp on. yes i think it's wonderful! (and far better than i was expecting).

i'm particularly taken with the way it follows on from 'holiday' in characteristic sunny, determined fashion (preditah and dj q as seamless skepta and plastician stand-ins) and then how the royal-t and todd tracks seem to correspond to some kind of emancipatory release; 'cool down' this exhilarating, exultant blast of pure air and bright outside daylight streaming in through an unexpected yet somehow always destined fissure, 'the stranger' (obsessed with why this is called this!) a carefree frolic through eden warm and benevolent. and then... then the fall, turning its back on redemption, spiralling and plunging deeply back down to unfathomable abyssal depths so disquieting in their ultimate sense of benumbed ambivalent comfort and poisoned sweetness, cheap and familiar as the titular closing common commercial sigils of tropicana and easyjet.

i applaud these young men for enhancing further the scope of their strange work.

r|t|c, Monday, 29 August 2011 16:04 (fourteen years ago)

Yes, LOVE "Cool Down", not at all the contribution I was expecting from Royal-T!
