Daytime radio

in the David Cavanagh book about Creation Records, there's loads of stuff about them trying to get their records played on daytime radio, because that's how you get people to buy your records.

But who listens to daytime radio? I mean, anyone other than housewives or doleies? and they're hardly a massive record buying market. or are they?

I don't know if 'daytime radio' means something special in the UK but if it means what it sounds like: office workers?

XFM is often quite tolerable in the daytime hours

I suspect the fact that getting played lots on daytime radio pretty much guarantees high chart positions suggests that there is some connection, and the companies pushing for their records to be on Radio 1's playlist (in the UK, it is Radio 1, not daytime radio in general) are not deluded, and that John Peel and Fabio won't have more of a sales effect. Loads of people listen to daytime Radio 1, that's why it has big audience figures.

Let's not forget kids out of school for the summer.

but who are these people who listen to daytime radio? I mean, most workplaces do not encourage people to sit around with the radio on bopping away to the latest chart sounds. Or do they?

kids in the summer, not really relevant - isn't the summertime a traditional slump period for record sales?

re: workplaces - not really offices, but employees in shops, factories, warehouses etc often have radios. not everyone works in an office, you know

I think they're going for the taxi driver market, the only people who can listen to the radio all day and stop off at a record shop whenever they feel like it (passengers permitting).
