THEM

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Saturday, 24 August 2002 23:40 (twenty-three years ago)

boxcubed, did someone actually edit your post?

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 24 August 2002 23:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom, can you actually say what you're talking about instead of this useless insidery expecting everyone to have heard it thing?

(I didn't, so it must be mark s or GLORY, the only other person with admin powers)

(I deleted that other thread because nuILM people were being offended by it)

Graham (graham), Sunday, 25 August 2002 00:05 (twenty-three years ago)

The name of the thread is the name of the single I'm talking about, Graham. It's the new one by Miss Dynamite. It's on A-list rotation on Radio 1, I'm sorry if that's too "insidery" for you.

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 25 August 2002 00:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Well there keep being threads that aren't so it could have been anything.

Graham (graham), Sunday, 25 August 2002 00:26 (twenty-three years ago)

there was no need to delete that thread!

ron (ron), Sunday, 25 August 2002 00:28 (twenty-three years ago)

big brother all-mi-tee!!

ron (ron), Sunday, 25 August 2002 00:28 (twenty-three years ago)

(unless something really foul went down in the past two hours??)

ron (ron), Sunday, 25 August 2002 00:30 (twenty-three years ago)

(The very last comments on it that maybe you didn't see were new people actually feeling unwelcome here. It wasn't at all constructive anyway and nothing new was really said, and most people had seen it)

Graham (graham), Sunday, 25 August 2002 00:34 (twenty-three years ago)

THE WHOLE THING WENT DOWN IT WAS LIKE ASSUNCIÓN ALL OVER AGAIN!!!

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Sunday, 25 August 2002 00:35 (twenty-three years ago)

BUT WITH BADGERS!!!

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Sunday, 25 August 2002 00:35 (twenty-three years ago)

PURE DY-NA-MI-TEE!!!

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Sunday, 25 August 2002 00:36 (twenty-three years ago)

i would suggest posts from regulars, explaining that despite the meta- type frustrations, that newcomers really ARE welcome, rather than deleting the thread.

ron (ron), Sunday, 25 August 2002 00:38 (twenty-three years ago)

(But the people in question feel that way whatever. And now their comments have been deleted along with everything else: what do you think they feel now? Not to mention the several posters old and new who were replying constructively and thoughtfully.)

(Ron there WERE such posts but they got deleted along with everything else.)

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 25 August 2002 00:42 (twenty-three years ago)

i just want to say that i love old-ilm and i agree with everything they say. please don't edit any more of my posts, i'm sorry!!

boxcubed (boxcubed), Sunday, 25 August 2002 00:49 (twenty-three years ago)

(alright, but it had MY NAME IN THE TITLE and I felt horribly self conscious and would have pleaded for it to be deleted anyway and it was stupid anyway. I did download a copy first so I can figure out how to get it back in the database if you'd like).

Are you serious Box Cubed?

Graham (graham), Sunday, 25 August 2002 00:51 (twenty-three years ago)

no i'm not graham! now cheer up!

boxcubed (boxcubed), Sunday, 25 August 2002 00:53 (twenty-three years ago)

X-Box Cube

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Sunday, 25 August 2002 00:57 (twenty-three years ago)

chuppa chup!

boxcubed (boxcubed), Sunday, 25 August 2002 01:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi Tom Id rather let my words stand and fall on their own merits thanks.

And I thought perspective was something you folk would be able to keep.

"We'll be one happy neighborhood
Spread out across the world
But who's going to stop that burglar
From breaking in my house
If he lives that far away

It's all here before your eyes
Safety is a big disguise
That hides among the other lies
They divide, conquer

Well I expect I won't be heard
Because my silence is assured
Never a discouraging word
They divide and conquer

They divide and conquer"

boxcubed (boxcubed), Sunday, 25 August 2002 01:09 (twenty-three years ago)

graham, thank you for being honest! and i understand your feelings about that thread (at least i think i do), but i still don't think deleting it is the right answer. the current hubbub i guess was sparked by julio on the radiohead, but the 'calling you out' thread was because of your anger(?), frustration and 'delete ILM' comments. as i recall, the stated purpose of the thread was a constructive one, to air out these frustrations. for me personally, what was bothering me was the threat of heavy-handed moderation. i think we should see what is happening now as snowballing from those 'delete' comments, and the over-moderating ain't gonna fix it. it just makes things worse. we shouldn't have an atmosphere where people have to (nervously?) joke about being banned, or worry about their threads being deleted, etc. also, there is somewhat of a standard set by tom, DG, et al on how ilx has been moderated, which i would advise sticking close to. that's my two cents worth.

shit, i hope i'm expressing myself slightly better than i think i am :-P

ron (ron), Sunday, 25 August 2002 01:10 (twenty-three years ago)

big brother all-mi-tee!!

btw, the thread title reminded me of 'school daze', please don't construe that as BIG BROTHER criticism about what's going on here.

ron (ron), Sunday, 25 August 2002 01:14 (twenty-three years ago)

imagine a boot, on ron's face, FOREVAH

boxcubed (boxcubed), Sunday, 25 August 2002 01:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham, I hope you accepted my apology- you never did reply?

Anyway Im glad you didnt ban me, Ill keep well out of your way in the future. This forum has always been self moderating and has rarely had to delete threads. God knows theres enough scarcasm and irony floating around to belittle someone into submission if they do get off track. At least thats my experience as a bonehead lurker.

Kiwi, Sunday, 25 August 2002 01:18 (twenty-three years ago)

OW!!!

ron (ron), Sunday, 25 August 2002 01:21 (twenty-three years ago)

scarcasm- insulting language that cuts deep (whoops)

Kiwi, Sunday, 25 August 2002 01:23 (twenty-three years ago)

bonehead vs everstomping boot

boxcubed (boxcubed), Sunday, 25 August 2002 01:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Hm...well, about the single -- I think I've heard it, and I recall it being okay enough. But isn't everyone annoyed with her because she decided not to do garage? Which seemed a bit proprietary...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 25 August 2002 02:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I prefer her last single. The Dy-na-mi-tee hook strikes me as "idea that should have been left on the cutting room floor".

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 25 August 2002 06:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Mm I love this, it really grabs me in a way It Takes More never really did.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 25 August 2002 08:32 (twenty-three years ago)

(I was kind of interested in reading the other thread aswell, it had become a kind of meta discussion of nu-ilm, but whatever, I'll make a point of reading all threads before signing off now)

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 25 August 2002 08:54 (twenty-three years ago)

its Miss Dynamite's best track yet. i really like the way the chrous reminds me of Musical youth's 'Pass The Ducthue' with the young voices response. also the sampled groove is brilliant - moody but smooth and stylish...if only more British 'urban pop' records were like this - actually that would be bad cos the saturation would kill the novelty

blueski, Sunday, 25 August 2002 10:23 (twenty-three years ago)

(alright, but it had MY NAME IN THE TITLE and I felt horribly self conscious and would have pleaded for it to be deleted anyway and it was stupid anyway. I did download a copy first so I can figure out how to get it back in the database if you'd like).

the fact that it generated over 60 responses in seven hours on a saturday should speak to it not entirely being about you graham, even if it did have yr name in the title. in the end i thought it had evolved into a constructive, painfully honest discussion on nu vs. old, something which was obviously required

i'm reticent to say anything that even reads like criticism b/c i sense that you're at a bit of a breaking point with ilx in general, but i don't see the logic behind deleting the entire thread. i'm with tom on this one: obv. some of the newbies are apprehensive abt. ilx (understandably so, esp. given how we're constantly being reminded that the old one was better) - what does deleting that thread do to alleviating those fears? why not just change the title instead?

i'm not big on the verbal/personal assaults that seem to have become par for the course these days, but threats of censorship/deletion/bans are way, way worse

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 25 August 2002 11:10 (twenty-three years ago)

might i also add that "dy-na-mi-tee - this is a great fucking single" is EXACTLY THE SAME AS "the atomic kitten album is fucking brilliant - of course it is"

at some point i'm left throwing my hands up in the air

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 25 August 2002 11:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh fuck off Mark.

Graham (graham), Sunday, 25 August 2002 11:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham, cut it out. Get off the computer, go calm down in the garden or something.

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 25 August 2002 11:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark put massive amounts of pressure on me and then berated me when I cracked. I do not what this attention, I programmed nuILx because I was bored, and that's all.

Graham (graham), Sunday, 25 August 2002 11:41 (twenty-three years ago)

threatening to delete the boards — even as a "joke" — is the most attention-seeking move anyone can POSSIBLY make, when they actually have that power

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 25 August 2002 11:56 (twenty-three years ago)

we are like lowly goriyas to graham's ganon = mark s must save hyrule

boxcubed (boxcubed), Sunday, 25 August 2002 16:53 (twenty-three years ago)

will you two just have sex and get it over with? ;)

blueski, Sunday, 25 August 2002 18:42 (twenty-three years ago)

It's an awful single. It has no tune.

MikeB, Sunday, 25 August 2002 21:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Downloaded, after some hours remember i had downloaded after seeing the thread:

It sounds like the intro to Under Mi Sleng Teng, no it sounds like Pato Fu, its off-tempo and shes singign in japanese. I didint liked it though i will probably will in a week

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Sunday, 25 August 2002 23:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't understand most of this thread, but in response to Tom's original comment - what, you've only just noticed?

I don't understand the album-haters, either. "Look, I'm terribly sorry, but you just can't come out with the most brilliantly accomplished British r'n'b album of recent years because, well, I'm afraid I've already pigeon-holed you as a garage artist. I know, it's a dreadful shame, but there it is."

She's a brilliant lyricist, too, I'm half-jokingly tempted to suggest that her odds for the Mercury Prize would be somewhat shorter if she was as bad a singer as Mike Skinner.

Mike (mratford), Monday, 26 August 2002 18:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Mike: yeah, shame on me - I'd not pigeonholed her as anything, I'd just been too lazy to pick the album up before this weekend. It's excellent. Other standouts (fingers on the download button): "Krazy Krush", "Afraid 2 Fly", "It Takes More", and the uncredited extra track (who's the MC?).

Tom (Groke), Monday, 26 August 2002 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Good selections, Tom. I must admit I like the first track Natural High, which kicks the album off with the no-nonsense "Life's full of pain, life's full of stress, especially when your coming from the streets". Is there a more efficient establishment of credibility anywhere?

Mike (mratford), Monday, 26 August 2002 19:26 (twenty-three years ago)

You mean, rich people have no stress?

Siegbran Hetteson (eofor), Monday, 26 August 2002 19:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I would note, Siegbran, that a rich person has no stress over such things as where to sleep, what to eat, whether they can eat, can they pay the light bill...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 26 August 2002 19:45 (twenty-three years ago)

we should really determine whats the most stressful kind of stress, so as to establish a useful stress hierarchy

boxcubed (boxcubed), Monday, 26 August 2002 20:07 (twenty-three years ago)

"I don't understand the album-haters, either. "Look, I'm terribly sorry, but you just can't come out with the most brilliantly accomplished British r'n'b album of recent years because, well, I'm afraid I've already pigeon-holed you as a garage artist. Yes, but have you *heard* "Boo!" or "Ramp"? An album full of those would be phenomenal, whereas A Little Deeper is merely pretty good.

Ha ha Tom I am glad to see someone else is not a "Krazy Krush" HATA - every review I have read which mentions it bags it, but it is clearly excellent.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 26 August 2002 20:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it's better than pretty good - I'm surprised I like it in some ways but I think the understated production and forceful personality work very well together. And how could anyone dislike "Krazy Krush"?? It sounds like the noises you make when you rub balloons on jumpers!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 26 August 2002 20:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Tim, yes "Boo!" is a fantastic single (I must admit I've not heard "Ramp"), but an album full of "It Takes More" and "Dy-na-mi-tee" would be phenomenal too. As Tom says, it's better than pretty good as it is, and her personality makes it flow despite the disparate production.

Mike (mratford), Monday, 26 August 2002 21:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually "Krazy Krush" reminds me a lot of Neneh Cherry (who's probably as good a reference point for the album generally as Lauren Hill is). I do like A Little Deeper, probably even more than "pretty good", but "Boo" was my favourite single of last year. It's more a function of how much I love female garage MCing and want an album of it than anything Dynamite's done wrong. I still probably prefer Mis-Teeq's Lickin' On Both Sides though.

Re: the understated production - it works best on "Dy-Na-Mi-Te" because its also somehow overstated at the same time, reminding me a bit of Mobb Deep's opulent minimalism.
