Amanda Lear: C or D?

Well? Has this one been done before? I bought "The Collection" CD last night, and her voice wasn't at all what I was expecting. Like a female Boris Karloff (or else a sedated Zsa Zsa Gabor), grooving along to 80s new wave. "Comics" was good kitschy fun. I think.

her look is better then her music.

Her sound is halfway between Nico and Boney M, but not as good as either. She has her moments, but there really aren't enough of them. "Queen of Chinatown" is pretty good, and her "Alphabet" is completely bonkers. There are others, like "This Man (Dali's Song)" and "Fashion Pack (Studio 54)" that sound interesting but are actually pretty drab. I don't know, more dud than classic. Not cause of her, really, it's just the mediocre material. Maybe I just never heard the right records.

i d/led a bunch of amanda lear stuff a while ago based on a mention on k-punk. her story is certainly amazing, the living link btw salvador dali and roxy music (oh, the 20th C). and no, it's not that great but it's not bad.

"Alphabet" is awesome, "Lili Marlene" is rad, "Fashion Pack", "Forget Him", 'The Photograph" . . . many good tunes. She's some kind of fag hag high priestess; some of the lyrics are so over the top, they're flawless (ie. the song about dumping your boyfriend with the lines "He doesn't look good in the nude, he doesn't like art, he doesn't like gays . .. forget him!")

Sorry I was so lukewarm about you in '02, Amanda. I guess I hadn't really heard the right records.

I know, I think I was going through a rough patch or something. I expect too much from my fag hag high priestesses.

four years pass...

Wait - was she born a man or not? I'm very ignorant about her and wikipedia is being notoriously ambivalent about this.
