voted Chocolate Factory but i need to hear more of the 90s albums

some dude, Monday, 7 February 2011 13:16 (fourteen years ago)

gut instinct says it's 12 play vs. tp2.com but yeah not heard enough of these in full

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Monday, 7 February 2011 13:22 (fourteen years ago)

not heard enough of them either - most of his albums need editing. but i voted for 12 play.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 7 February 2011 13:29 (fourteen years ago)

tp-2 narrowly over chocolate factory

J0rdan S., Monday, 7 February 2011 13:30 (fourteen years ago)

haaaaappy people, babe !

AlXTC from Paris, Monday, 7 February 2011 13:54 (fourteen years ago)

never copped what tp2.com stood for before, i was like "where's tp1... oh"

plax (ico), Monday, 7 February 2011 13:56 (fourteen years ago)

12 Play is truly the most awkwardly sequeled album in pop history. he recently scrapped 12 Play: 4th Quarter in favor of working on The Return of 12 Play: Night of the Living Dead, and I swear I am not making any of that up.

some dude, Monday, 7 February 2011 14:01 (fourteen years ago)

He mentioned that in the interview with Will Oldham, saying that it would be something like an R&B Thriller album. Could/should be great!

willem, Monday, 7 February 2011 15:56 (fourteen years ago)

age aint nothing but a number

if there is a King Moaty, apparently he is huge into slapstick. (a hoy hoy), Monday, 7 February 2011 17:04 (fourteen years ago)

TP3.Reloaded

da croupier, Monday, 7 February 2011 17:13 (fourteen years ago)

I know a lot of people are "over" his novelty metaphor tracks, but the preponderance of them on Tp3 and Double Up make those albums more entertaining on the whole than the earlier ones

da croupier, Monday, 7 February 2011 17:15 (fourteen years ago)

Chocolate Factory has a good balance of novelty and craft -- like, i wish any of the sex metaphor songs on TP3 were half as good as the original "Ignition"

some dude, Monday, 7 February 2011 17:17 (fourteen years ago)

If Chocolate Factory was winnowed down by a third I'd probably vote for it

da croupier, Monday, 7 February 2011 17:19 (fourteen years ago)

Folks who can't cotton to his humor should probably check out his 1995 album, it's pretty laff free. I know Christgau approved of its relative maturity.

da croupier, Monday, 7 February 2011 17:21 (fourteen years ago)

tp-2.com

never copped what tp2.com stood for before, i was like "where's tp1... oh"

hadn't realised this till you made this post & now feel really stupid. the .com is still makes no sense though.

prolego, Monday, 7 February 2011 17:21 (fourteen years ago)

there was a point around the late 90s/early 2000s when the idea of the internet still had enough novelty that people would just throw "dot com" at the end of titles willy nilly

some dude, Monday, 7 February 2011 22:14 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i feel like it could just as easily have been called tp millenium or something

plax (ico), Monday, 7 February 2011 22:17 (fourteen years ago)

tp3 is underrated

bows don't kill people, arrows do (Jordan), Monday, 7 February 2011 22:18 (fourteen years ago)

Where is Loveland? And 12 Play: 4th Quarter (THE LEAK)? Anyway my ranking is....

TP2.com
R. Kelly
Chocolate Factory
R.
Happy People/U Saved Me
Love Letter
12 Play
Untitled
Double Up
TP-3

haven't heard Born in the 90s - just familiar with the singles ("honey love" is dope...)

The Brainwasher, Monday, 7 February 2011 23:21 (fourteen years ago)

12 Play that low :(((

guess R's not yer homie lover friend

door to door legume salesman (San Te), Monday, 7 February 2011 23:27 (fourteen years ago)

lol I love 12 Play - "sex me" and "seems like you're ready" are two of my fave r. songs definitely - there is some stuff on it that hasn't aged well but it's still an 7.5-8/10 album imo. I pretty much love R. Kelly's entire discography

The Brainwasher, Monday, 7 February 2011 23:29 (fourteen years ago)

o ok.

yea "Sex Me" and "Seems Like You're Ready" are great, also love "For You".

the hip-hoppy tracks are the ones taht didn't age well for me, cuz they're dated, tho "The Crotch On You" is delightfully ribald

door to door legume salesman (San Te), Monday, 7 February 2011 23:34 (fourteen years ago)

love all the ones i've heard; tough to rank!

12 Play (1993)
R. (1998)
TP-2.com (2000)
Chocolate Factory (2003)
Untitled (2009)
Love Letter (2010)

will admit that Untitled def sits a good bit lower than the others but most of these are untouchable. voted love letter b/c i've been playing the shit out of it all winter, and i get a feeling it's gonna be lucky to get a few votes here :(

Damn this thread seems so....different without ilxor (ilxor), Monday, 7 February 2011 23:41 (fourteen years ago)

one month passes...

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Monday, 7 March 2011 00:01 (fourteen years ago)

xp "For You" is one of my favorites from him, I love it because it's the kind of song you wouldn't think he's capable of doing, something really emotional and beautiful on an album full of "I Like the Panties on You" and "Sex Me"; I guess that's really R.'s whole M.O.

frogbs, Monday, 7 March 2011 15:45 (fourteen years ago)

dude it's "I Like The Crotch On You"

da croupier, Monday, 7 March 2011 16:00 (fourteen years ago)

oh yeah, that's even more ridiculous than I remembered

my group of friends have a "trapped in the closet" night once every 6 months or so, it never seems to get old. what surprises me is how many times its been parodied and how far short the parodies fall; you'd think it would be ripe for that, but the original just tops everything

frogbs, Monday, 7 March 2011 16:42 (fourteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 00:01 (fourteen years ago)

R. (1998) got shafted, otherwise this looks about right!

Damn this thread seems so....different without ilxor (ilxor), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 02:27 (fourteen years ago)

ugh TP.3 Reloaded fans

TIGER BLOOD aka the sheendriver (some dude), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 02:30 (fourteen years ago)

no votes for R. Kelly(1995) is an absolute travesty...

The Brainwasher, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 02:52 (fourteen years ago)

tp-2.com

never copped what tp2.com stood for before, i was like "where's tp1... oh"

hadn't realised this till you made this post & now feel really stupid. the .com is still makes no sense though.

IIRC tp-2.com used to be the url of his official website ca 2000 or so!

Lt. Van Ice Cage (govern yourself accordingly), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 09:44 (fourteen years ago)

tp3 been robbed

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 11 March 2011 11:41 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i feel like it could just as easily have been called tp millenium or something

tp2k!

cwkiii, Saturday, 12 March 2011 00:47 (fourteen years ago)

one year passes...

If Chocolate Factory was winnowed down by a third I'd probably vote for it

y'know what, I think this is a problem with literally every single album he's done until maybe Love Letter (which is still about an hour!) So many tunes I like on the Factory and then suddenly I remember, you have to sit through that awful Ja Rule track

frogbs, Sunday, 19 August 2012 00:13 (thirteen years ago)

kind of disappointed w/ 12 Play once i finally heard it, so much of his terrible Chubb Rock-sounding rapper voice

some dude, Sunday, 19 August 2012 00:52 (thirteen years ago)

one year passes...

Everyone itt should vote in this:
