Best live box set ever or an overhyped mess of a release? I am on the best ever side as are apparently many others as this brings big bucks used. I am amazed it is out of print.

Best ever. Ripped my library's copy last year and have been loving the hell out of it ever since.

I only have Highlights, but I love it. The 60s quintet never sounded better imo.

My favorite live boxed set ever, however, is Coltrane at the Village Vanguard. There are also a couple of other incredible live miles sets (Cellard Door & Blackhawk)

Absolutely the best Miles box. Cellar Door is a close second, but this is the killer. This band was so fucking free onstage, absolutely tearing standards apart, and this was recorded in '65 - they had three more years to go.

that's not funny. (unperson), Monday, 7 February 2011 22:42 (fourteen years ago)

I've got part of the Blackhawk set on vinyl, that is another great one.

Blackhawk is truly outstanding but I much prefer The Plugged Nickel set.

I love the way the band really pushes the "space" concept -- miles will play a couple quick phrases, drop out, herbie will hit one little accent chord, then the bass and drums will just walk for a few bars, herbie will hit another chord and tony williams will drop a bomb.

This is one case where the US version is better than the Japanese version. It is longer, the Japanese version has some missing solos.

So good you can get lost in it and forget about the passage of time.

Classic.

I love the ambience on this one too. You can about hear the drinks being poured and the beer bottles being opened.

I love how some guy in the audience is taunting Ron Carter: "OK, Ray Brown! Yeah...Paul Chambers! Ha ha!"
