it's absolutely gorgeous, a lot of the versions have a filtered somewhat alien(away from the familiar) presence even if they don't stray all that far from the formula, but it is interesting to hear people like ISAN with vocals. many of the vocals don't have the heaviness of the originals so the mood of the songs are altered even if they are all mostly instantly recognizable. the companion cd is rather nice as well. anyone else have this yet? will slowdive's status continue its current elevation? it is clear that most of the bands on here were already huge fans based on their own output but might slowdive attain mbv-like stature in terms of impact.

Friend of mine has been claiming for years that Slowdive was going to reach that level eventually, and I think with increasing justification. I'm just glad I got into them when I did and was able to see them three times.

I've already heard quite a few things about this disc and am looking forward to it, but pray tell, what's this 'companion' CD exactly?

The Companion CD is apparently the bands on the first disc doing their own stuff, but in a similar vein to the first disc.

yes, the companion cd appears to be a way for morr to show off some of their newer bands. the songs from their established acts like manual are brilliant but the newer bands(populous, future 3) are kinda blah. all of the cover versions are really very good, well except maybe for the vocodered version of 'when the sun hits' by solvent but that is redeemed by another version of 'when the sun hits' by komëit whose take is to make it a lovely piano ballad.

also, i wish they had gone back farther than 'just for a day' would have been interesting to see songs like 'losing today' and 'shine' which are already wispy and barely there get the atmospheric treatment most of these bands specialize in.

I have a review of this forthcoming somewhere, I think. The Slowdive covers bother me a little bit: no one tries to replicate the big wall of sound payoff Slowdive came to so often, and on something like "When the Sun Hits" -- where the big swells are very much a part of the composition -- it just seems sort of naggingly not enough. A lot of it is very, very lovely, though, and the companion disc is great in typical Morr fashion. And I'm particularly taken with the Guitar track.

i think a lot of the sadness of the music has been removed as well, but i just attribute that to the celebratory nature of a tribute? ha. it is actually rahter inexpensive too for a two disc set at 14 dollars. it should have had a bookelt though.
