This COOL Yamaha CS-80 Synth I saw at a pawn shop in NW DC. I wowed some of the customers with my synth knowledge.

Might not look like it in the picture but in person you are wowed at how big and heavy this thing is. It's literally an electronic portable home organ without the tubes and reeds.

Nice! Aren't those like 200lbs?

WOW! Please tell me you bought it (if it was affordable)
Always wanted one of these guys after learning it was Vangelis' main synth on Blade Runner.

Do you have 5000$$ lying around. I sure don't, want to wire it to me. Besides some of the free CS-80 virtual synths are just as good as the real thing

If you want a CS-80, I'd suggest getting the Altura Software Synth. It's actually close to the CS-80 and even has the blade runner sound loaded. I heard also that the CS-80 is actually notoriously hard to maintain and conduct repairs on. There are few engineers who could do it today. You'd be better with the software synth version.

I'm pretty sure this is a CS80 that Miles is using:

what kind of synths or drum machines does a startrekman own

Who's the guy playing the cool Vox 12-string, anyone know? Don't wanna search Miles band lineups to guess. Don't think it's Pete Cosey, who is probably the other dude playing? Totally weird playing, and cool to see in this context (not the Miles lacked cool guitar playing in this era of course).
― grandavis, Thursday, 10 February 2011 16:39 (fourteen years ago)
It's Pete Cosey.
The other dude is Reggie Lucas.

never liked pete cosey for what it's worth. I get what Miles was going for, but Cosey is too wanky most of the time.

i've been wishing for a thread where i can point to certain synth sounds in songs, and some benevolent expert will tell me what synth is probably making that sound (just to have a starting point for trying to emulate it). startrekman, do you accept this responsibility?

that's another Yamaha instrument, the YC45D Organ. IIRC it's the same instrument Terry Riley used to make "A Rainbow in Curved Air" or maybe "Shri Camel"
― Pashmina, Thursday, 10 February 2011 17:24 (fourteen years ago)
My favourite VST synths are Kontakt (which is really a sampler but has loads of synth-like features), Korg Legacy Wavestation, AZR3 (p good donationware Hammond emulator) most of the other stuff I have rarely gets used, those 3 get used a lot.
― Pashmina, Thursday, 10 February 2011 17:27 (fourteen years ago)
Thanks pashmina for that information.

the korg legacy analog collection looks amazing, but apparently it's been discontinued, so i couldn't get it legally even if i wanted to?

Hey, thanks for the guitarist/youtube update. Cosey it is! I like his playing, but does not work great in that live setting in the clip.
― grandavis, Thursday, 10 February 2011 18:44 (fourteen years ago)
ah ok:
Starting on November 17th 2010, the components of all KORG Legacy Collections series will now be offered for sale as individual virtual instruments including: "MS-20", "Polysix", "Mono/Poly", "M1", "WAVESTATION", "MDE-X". Also available is the new "KORG Legacy Collection - Special Bundle", which is the complete bundle of all of the Korg Legacy Collection software titles at the KORG USER NET SHOP.
With this change, we will no longer offer the packages of software titles like "ANALOG EDITION 2007" and "DIGITAL EDITION". From now on, individual software will be provided instead of them. For details, please visit "Change of product line-up".

The CS80 is an absolute beast both in terms of capacity and weight. And an absolute nightmare to keep in tune/in working order
