Dev - Bass Down Low

This is my new favorite song (as of today; subject to change without notice).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOAMfUJ3tsc

This is her first single:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDfUjM-vygI

And yes, you've heard her on that Far East Movement single:

Discuss?

that's not funny. (unperson), Friday, 11 February 2011 22:54 (fourteen years ago)

Like her now. Expect her to get old really fast.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 11 February 2011 22:57 (fourteen years ago)

And actually "Booty Bounce" isn't her first single. This is.

I don't really expect her to get old at all. I expect to have no memory of ever having liked her two weeks from now.

This song has a medium tempo beat
And a bass within the normal frequency range

Prick Squad (Ówen P.), Friday, 11 February 2011 23:45 (fourteen years ago)

Glad I stuck around long enough for the boob thrust.

Singles Jukebox reviews:

Dev & the Cataracs are now on the new New Boyz single "Backseat," too; thinking so far I don't like it as much (maybe a 7 out of 10?), but it could grow (or shrink) on me.

xhuxk, Sunday, 13 February 2011 00:21 (fourteen years ago)

i kind of prefer "booty bounce" to "bass down low" b/c the latter sounds too much like something i can't quite put my finger on

new ep is awesome

seriously

r|t|c, Thursday, 19 July 2012 12:15 (twelve years ago)

very tempted to start selling them as the cali funkystepz

r|t|c, Thursday, 19 July 2012 12:16 (twelve years ago)

sounds good but the vocals are a pretty huge handicap imo (lol at these dudes having a mixtape called "I Thought They Were Black?!")

Barack 2 Chainz Obama (some dude), Thursday, 19 July 2012 13:24 (twelve years ago)

yeah i think ordinarily i'd agree and blanch at lmfao style d00dz the same as any sane person but just these guys inhabit the roles of cartoon la midnite mean party sleazeballs so well i'm into it (especially so when dev's on as the foil)

i mean i guess that's the whole attraction in general basically, they scan so very in the box generically but then you listen and they have this really sharp attention to detail, not an ounce of fat on it, and an uncommonly cinematic sense of space that plays itself interestingly off the deadpan club dude vox. they keep you on your toes

r|t|c, Thursday, 19 July 2012 15:04 (twelve years ago)

they are good producers in most instances, but yeaaaaaah the vocals, no

chain the color of am0n (The Reverend), Thursday, 19 July 2012 19:44 (twelve years ago)

how many times do they say "yolo" on this ep

Barack 2 Chainz Obama (some dude), Thursday, 19 July 2012 19:46 (twelve years ago)

That's not a very good taqueria.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 19 July 2012 19:52 (twelve years ago)

this EP is fucking great! "all you" was already a sleeper fav of mine this year but this is even better than i could have imagined. like, the music is so great - the space, the details, the trancey breakdowns, everything - that the dodgy vox don't matter at all, and when you start just thinking of them as details rather than the focus you can get pretty into them.

kiiiiinda wish they'd handed all vocal duties over to dev, but this is fantastic.

bitch I'm on the 242 (lex pretend), Friday, 20 July 2012 09:25 (twelve years ago)

how many times do they say "yolo" on this ep

― Barack 2 Chainz Obama (some dude), Thursday, July 19, 2012 8:46 PM (Yesterday) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

this is actually a great q cos it perfectly differentiates them from the guys you seem to think they are - if i'm recalling correctly it's only the once right at the end of 'alcohol' where they do the caricature of the dumb drunk chick like "yolo, you know what they say riiiight, yolooo!!!". whereas they themselves are rhyming "i could date you / or sedate you" at the beginning of the track.

basically they are more like these droll sleazy predators a part of but also on the prowl in a yolo habitat. you could almost say they're weekndish if they werent often saying silly shit and not taking themselves nearly as seriously

r|t|c, Friday, 20 July 2012 13:09 (twelve years ago)

i mean ok theyre not droll like oscar wilde droll but idk i do frequently find them kinda dryly amusing

r|t|c, Friday, 20 July 2012 13:14 (twelve years ago)

also dev is barely any different let's be honest, her appeal is mainly textural and the fact that girl sass is always more forgiving

r|t|c, Friday, 20 July 2012 13:20 (twelve years ago)

oh yeah i know that skit was supposed to be satirical (although they DO say yolo in the actual lyrics elsewhere too) but i think Entourage has proven pretty conclusively that attempting a knowing critique of douches can often come off pretty douchey in and of itself. not that i'm hating on the record just for the 'rich kids of instagram' vibe they give off, i love the sound of their tracks and the vocals aren't always a drag.

Barack 2 Chainz Obama (some dude), Friday, 20 July 2012 13:58 (twelve years ago)

Paris H needs to get these guys to do stuff for her

bitch I'm on the 242 (lex pretend), Friday, 20 July 2012 14:06 (twelve years ago)

yeah after only hearing parish on erick sermon beats for so long that would be an interesting change of pace

Barack 2 Chainz Obama (some dude), Friday, 20 July 2012 14:08 (twelve years ago)

Totally hear the funkystepz comparaison as well

three weeks pass...

"roll the dice" is maybe the best song ever

the 'woah oh oh' coda makes me happy

uberweiss, Thursday, 16 August 2012 23:58 (twelve years ago)

no really this cataracs album is the most underrated of the year

lex pretend, Thursday, 23 August 2012 13:17 (twelve years ago)

To all of our amazing fans,

The Cataracs, as of 2 weeks ago, has taken a new form. David informed us of a pretty big decision... The decision to follow his heart and put music down. At the time it hit me like a sack full of "what the ****" bricks. But it's a choice I respect. He deserves happiness and if it's not here in The Cataracs then he should be out there finding it.

Got it? Kinda intense right? Now breathe...

As for the future: Well, as some of you may know I've always been the only one in The Cataracs who produces music. So that doesn't change. In fact, instead of slowing down these last weeks, I've collaborated with artists I could only dream of before and created the best music of my career. And the music will only continue to get bigger and better. You just won't be hearing David on it anymore. It's sad... But some doors close so that new ones can open.

So all that being said... Whattup guys. I am The Cataracs.

-Niles

Well, as some of you may know I've always been the only one in The Cataracs who produces music.

lex pretend, Thursday, 23 August 2012 14:41 (twelve years ago)

i'm sure that other guy will be sorely missed

uberweiss, Thursday, 23 August 2012 15:34 (twelve years ago)

haha seriously

Dev album is my shit

some dude, Thursday, 23 August 2012 15:50 (twelve years ago)

I think the reason I'm not that hot on the Cataracs album is it's all 4x4 and I want syncopation from them. Like their sense of rhythm was part of what drew me to them in the first place and I feel like it's missing here.

The Reverend, Thursday, 23 August 2012 21:37 (twelve years ago)

You know, a while when we were talking about great dance producer drops, I totally forgot about and should have mentioned "It's the Cataracs"

I love the ep but also kinda agree that some more of their electro snap would be good.

Tim F, Thursday, 23 August 2012 22:13 (twelve years ago)

the whole west coast needs more electro snap. barely followed through on the promise of "vans"

the late great, Thursday, 23 August 2012 22:17 (twelve years ago)

sayin

The Reverend, Thursday, 23 August 2012 23:30 (twelve years ago)

lil debbie is almost there, e-40 and hyphy are still strong but there's no big hit

la jerkin kids disappointing to me

the late great, Friday, 24 August 2012 00:05 (twelve years ago)

mmm. yeah, as i suspected this way overstated electro snap syncopation carry-on is by far more yours than theirs

outmoded ballast they are better for having jettisoned in any case

r|t|c, Friday, 24 August 2012 08:32 (twelve years ago)

weren't their big far east movement and dev hits fairly straightforward rhythmically?

i really like the way the 4x4 sets off all the jack-in-the-box tangents of the songs on the EP

lex pretend, Friday, 24 August 2012 08:40 (twelve years ago)

of course it's ballasts it's bass r u dens

the late great, Friday, 24 August 2012 08:58 (twelve years ago)

this is still my jam

so is the dev album

i don't really know what to say about it apart from every detail and switch-up is immensely sonically satisfying in a way few others match

lex pretend, Wednesday, 10 October 2012 12:22 (twelve years ago)

the line "got a devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other one / but i ain't never listened to none of 'em"

lex pretend, Wednesday, 10 October 2012 12:31 (twelve years ago)

they REALLY have a knack for a well-timed drop

lex pretend, Wednesday, 10 October 2012 12:31 (twelve years ago)

yeah especially coming back to it after a while there's so many moments where you get so into a track's progression and suddenly you wake up like wait what how did we get all the way over here. and why! it's amazing

'canteloupe' turning into a royal space army procession, marching to "i heard her name was sally, but she go by eden"

'ooo yeah' turning into some stardancer unicorn shit

'mouthful' turning 007

r|t|c, Wednesday, 10 October 2012 12:40 (twelve years ago)

yeah you totally don't notice the hows and wheres of the music morphing!
