Probably be a solo landslide. I have a hard time drawing lines between these to be honest, they occupy different parts of my music comprehension brain.

I have a huge special place in my heart for Gabriel-era Genesis. Nursery Cryme, Selling England by the Pound, and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway are all amazing.

It's hard to vote as I've lived with the Genesis albums way more than I have with his solo albums, which have also been fantastic. gonna have to wait and do some more field research.

PG solo has a wayyy better hit to miss ratio than most all of his Genesis albums. Also my favorite PG songs tower in greatness over most Genesis material. Like I would pick just "White Shadow" over the first four Genesis albums if I had to choose. Even "So" onwards I find more endurable and pleasant than those first couple Genesis albums. I do like Lamb Lies DOwn on Broadway a lot, tho...I once made my friend a little "action figure" of Rael from polymer clay, w/a removable penis.

This settles it in favour of Genesis as far as I'm concerned

Is that Ariel Pink?

Mark, Saturday, 12 February 2011 18:32 (fourteen years ago)

I kind of admire rather than like PG solo, A couple of Genesis' albums w PG are all time favourites to me, especially "Nursery Cryme", where they have this church music/english hym dynamic thing going on, so not really a difficult choice for me. That Belgian TV series is awesome, the Genesis one is my favourite, just a little bit better than the VdGG one. Gabriel in the early 70's was ridiculously good-looking!

I once made my friend a little "action figure" of Rael from polymer clay, w/a removable penis.

this is great!

Pashmina, Saturday, 12 February 2011 19:22 (fourteen years ago)

I've got to go with Genesis too, PG's best solo stuff is great but Genesis had some weird magic in their best grooves that I don't think he recreated solo.

Y Kant Torres Red (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 12 February 2011 19:28 (fourteen years ago)

I adore PG solo stuff and did so at a formative year (High School) so I have to go with that.

NYCNative, Saturday, 12 February 2011 19:36 (fourteen years ago)

The first two PG albums sound a bit drab and colourless to me, as though he was making a conscious effort to go against the Genesis aesthetic to prove a point. The 3rd and 4th ones are great but after So I lost interest. He needed Banks' melodic sense to turn his visions into persuasive songs.

PG Solo > PG Genesis > Mike & The Mechanics > non-PG Genesis >Phil Collins solo

Genesis with Gabriel is better, although Gabriel solo is way better than Genesis without him nor Steve Hackett.

said it before ... i just don't get Gabriel-era Genesis.

Political Unrest Stabilizes Society Yeah (Eisbaer), Sunday, 13 February 2011 20:03 (fourteen years ago)

Pretend the lyrics don't matter and listen to Selling England by the Pound. I did not get this album at first (and it was my first early Genesis album). But I usually say this is my favorite album of all time

homeless romantic (CaptainLorax), Sunday, 13 February 2011 21:15 (fourteen years ago)

but I'm no different than you about not getting certain music

homeless romantic (CaptainLorax), Sunday, 13 February 2011 21:17 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, I think I was way off about a solo landslide, anyway.

Mark, Sunday, 13 February 2011 21:45 (fourteen years ago)

not much to get about prog-Genesis imo, it's progressive, classically influenced rock music, with plenty of excess and quirkiness. Either you like that sort of thing or you don't. When it comes to it though I really think Genesis's prog was way more immediately ear catching than say, the noisy noodling of King Crimson (who I also love).

beau jest faux-verdrive (San Te), Sunday, 13 February 2011 22:37 (fourteen years ago)

when i say that i "don't get" PG-era Genesis, i mean that it seems like they were trying to sound like Yes (a prog band that i DO like) -- only nowhere near as well. i do admit that Peter Gabriel's costumes were pretty nifty, tho'.

Political Unrest Stabilizes Society Yeah (Eisbaer), Sunday, 13 February 2011 23:08 (fourteen years ago)

I cant choose. I love both early Genesis AND PG's solo stuff, for different reasons. I WON'T CHOOSE DON'T MAKE ME.

Senor DingDong (Trayce), Sunday, 13 February 2011 23:37 (fourteen years ago)

...oh ok Genesis then.

Senor DingDong (Trayce), Sunday, 13 February 2011 23:37 (fourteen years ago)

I mean come on, "I know what I like in my wardrobe" is such an awesome song.

Senor DingDong (Trayce), Sunday, 13 February 2011 23:38 (fourteen years ago)

when i say that i "don't get" PG-era Genesis, i mean that it seems like they were trying to sound like Yes (a prog band that i DO like) -- only nowhere near as well.

I feel like they didn't sound all that much like Yes at all. For starters, Yes were a lot more jazz influenced and slightly more "out there", Genesis were started as a songwriting vehicle and were much more about songs (read: melodies), less about performance and instrumental excel. Also, they had much more of an obvious English folk/medieval music influence than Yes ever had. They were also very careful (at least on albums) to do drum solos or long, intricate, non-hummable instrumental solos. Steve Hackett didn't play half as fast as Steve Howe sometimes would, and instead concentrated on creating melodically beautiful solos.

Mind you, I love Yes as well, but I love Genesis even more and I feel they are not very similar to each other.

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Sunday, 13 February 2011 23:49 (fourteen years ago)

yea Yes and Genesis may both be prog bands but they're from very different spectrums.

beau jest faux-verdrive (San Te), Sunday, 13 February 2011 23:52 (fourteen years ago)

Yes are fucking shite

Morcheeba, simply happening. (PaulTMA), Monday, 14 February 2011 00:38 (fourteen years ago)

Pretend the lyrics don't matter and listen to Selling England by the Pound.

The lyrics are one of my fave things abt Gabriel-era Genesis! WHen I can make them out, anyway. Like I could not tell you wtf one contiguous chunk of "Harold The Barrel" says. Maybe I should rock that album again.

The best thing about Genesis: their records are plentiful & cheap in used record stores!

Peter Pepsi (Abbbottt), Monday, 14 February 2011 02:25 (fourteen years ago)

Well that's not "the best" at all but it's nice you could drop $15 on good copies of most of the PG-era discog.

Peter Pepsi (Abbbottt), Monday, 14 February 2011 02:26 (fourteen years ago)

I like the bit in Harold the Barrel where he cut off his toes. Or someone elses toes. I forget now.

Senor DingDong (Trayce), Monday, 14 February 2011 02:27 (fourteen years ago)

xp

I like PG Genesis lyrics too but I remember the first time I heard 'Battle of Epping Forest'. I played it with some friends in the room and it was utterly weird to hear "just like any picnic...... picnic..... picnic...... picnic". It was one of those 0_0 moments. Along with the rest of the song. "You're telling me!"

lol, not a good song to spring on to people. I hadn't heard the album yet either

PG with Genesis for me, even though III and IV/Security are like, towering career-making highlights and genius. But so are Selling, Foxtrot, and Lamb.

akm, Monday, 14 February 2011 04:56 (fourteen years ago)

also, though he obviously did some silly shit with Genesis, none of it was as bad as "kiss that frog" or "barry williams show"

Voted for solo Gabriel. I especially love the dank creepiness of those first few solo records. And Larry Fast on synths was a much better sonic partner than T. Banks. Gabriel in Genesis also too wordy and tweeee.

Just listening to "In the Cage" on heaphones at the moment. Such a fantastic sense of tension. Such a weird album.

Out of the 5:1 mixes done with the remasters a couple years back, I'd say "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" was the most interesting one.
