"Songs For The Deaf" - whatcha reckon?

Radio interludes between each track aside - i think this is a really crackin' rock record... heavy riffs, interesting faith in melody, Dave Grohl on drums (sounding spectacular on the opening track IMO)...

'Tis a huge improvement on "Rated R" .... and the title and cover art alone are enough for it to attract far more interest this time around.... branding-wise these guys can do no wrong...

What do you lot think?

Very enjoyable. Wind tunnel tested machine rock rules. But I'm a sucker for handclaps and that nagging Stooges piano hammering as featured on 'Go with the flow' which at the moment is my favorite track.

good not great; loved R and think this is narrower and not as much fun. still good, though.

deaf people don't like it very much

"The doormen got a bit confused when they started using sign language. Some of their gestures were very descriptive."

I can partly understand "the anger of the deaf", but hey, they surely should be able to see the humor in the whole thing...

on the album: terrific! super-riffs (very very 70's) + stringent drumming (very very Grohl) makes the album swing.

I like it a lot, though I'd personally cut out "Songs For The Dead" through "Hanging Tree" or a good portion of that second quarter of the album.

I'm curious if more people have been getting into this. It's definitely been a real "grower" for me. The production was hard to get past at first (they seem to be EMULATING the Bowie mix of Raw Power for some reason), but I think a lot of is just sweet.

And am I the only person who thinks these guys are a LOT like Blue Oyster Cult?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 22 March 2003 21:28 (twenty-three years ago)

That's the funniest thing I've read all day. Ahhh British tabloid humor.

Evan (Evan), Saturday, 22 March 2003 21:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Anthony ain't British!!

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 22 March 2003 23:32 (twenty-three years ago)

No no I was talking about that "Deaf people don't like it very much." article. It CAN'T POSSIBLY be true, can it?

CAN IT?!??!

Evan (Evan), Saturday, 22 March 2003 23:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Tis a bit sad if it is true - but shame on the deaf
for not researching it a bit.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Sunday, 23 March 2003 08:32 (twenty-three years ago)

shame on the deaf

am I alone in thinking this would be a good album title?

Bobby D Gray (bedhead), Sunday, 23 March 2003 09:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Sun: And when it finally became clear that they had misunderstood the preconcert publicity, they became angry and stomped off.

willem: I can partly understand "the anger of the deaf", but hey, they surely should be able to see the humor in the whole thing...

No, sir. You would be wrong. In my experience with the deaf (admittedly limited, but more than most people have), they are almost universally pissy, particularly when they're expecting a deaf event, and wind up at a hearing event. That would be like a rasta being led to believe he was attending rasta event, and ending up at an Oscar after-party.

Well... kinda. That's kind of a bad example. There's no good way to describe the rage of the deaf against the hearing -- they're convinced (CONVINCED!) that deafness is not a disability at all, and that the "hearing world" is out to get them by telling them that it is a disability. Largely because of the way they are raised and educated, plus the way they are picked on, they become convinced that every sound, every piece of music, every bit of speech, is an affront to their God-given way of life. They learn to hate the world outside of the deaf community early on -- they are, in fact, taught this way. The thinking goes (kinda) don't trust the hearing, they can't understand you (which is mostly true, though it gives the hearing too little credit for trying) and they will only make fun of you and take advantage of you. There's a language barrier between them and us, and also a cultural barrier. And plus, if you're deaf, you graduate high school with something like a sixth grade education. You are, for all (hearing) intents and purposes, pretty dumb. Deaf people live their lives in what they imagine to be occupied territory -- they feel overrun and opressed every minute of their lives by the hearing. And they often become angry, and they are forever stomping off.

It's understandable in a way. You know how when you're talking to someone with a thick accent that you can't understand, there's a tendency to get frustrated? Imagine that that's the majority of your interactions, and what's more, you have no hope of ever learning THEIR language. You'd be frustrated a lot. And thus, the anger of the deaf.

That doesn't make them any more fun to be around, though.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 23 March 2003 09:02 (twenty-three years ago)

BTW yes I did like this record- I had to listen to it many many many times at work last summer, and it really grew on me. It's nice to hear some modern metal music that still sounds like rock n' roll.

Bobby D Gray (bedhead), Sunday, 23 March 2003 09:03 (twenty-three years ago)

"Listening to you/ reminds me of a motor's endless drone/ and how the deaf are so damn lucky."

Andrew L (Andrew L), Sunday, 23 March 2003 09:16 (twenty-three years ago)

this is one of my favorite albums of last year! hands down.
i am getting kinda sick of seeing them everywhere.
i thought josh said they'd break up if they got too big...
well, josh?
howboutit???

eedd, Sunday, 23 March 2003 13:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Point well taken, Kenan. Clearly, I'm not at all familiar with deaf people, thanks for providing some "context".

willem (willem), Monday, 24 March 2003 09:18 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
Do they really sound like Blue Oyster Cult? Would I like them?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 14:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I think so. To both questions. Though many have told me they're more like Deep Purple. I definitely think Nick Olivieri is a better singer than Eric Bloom.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 8 May 2003 00:12 (twenty-three years ago)

they sound like a blend of zz top (al la tres hombres), a bit o blue cheer in the guitar fuuz tones, and slap o melvin for chunkyness.

it's beyond me how they made it soooo well. for the peeps that slag em, either yr a an uptight hipster or DMB follower...

yeah.

six years pass...

When I got this album, I thought the bleeps in the songs were because it's supposed to sound like its on the radio. But now I'm not so sure. Does everyone's albums have bleeps? Someone listen to "Six Shooter" and tell me

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 4 June 2009 02:37 (seventeen years ago)

What, like bleeped-out swear words? None on my copy.

nate woolls, Thursday, 4 June 2009 07:59 (seventeen years ago)

It was definitely a "listening on the car radio" concept album.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 4 June 2009 11:52 (seventeen years ago)

stop shopping at wal-mart, whiney!

da croupier, Thursday, 4 June 2009 12:11 (seventeen years ago)

I got it as a promo back in the day.

You suck, Interscope.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 4 June 2009 14:01 (seventeen years ago)

I just replaced it on Amazon for $3.98 after shipping :)

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 4 June 2009 14:09 (seventeen years ago)

lol bleeps

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 4 June 2009 14:27 (seventeen years ago)

I seriously thought they were part of a "car radio concept record" for seven years. I have no idea why this never occured to me until now.
