Reggae/Dub drum breaks: does the bass ever quit?

humbly beseeching reggae and dub fans of ILM. i'm replacing my band's very rudimentary drum machine programs with taped loops, from live sources whenever possible, and we have a pretty bangin' post-punk track that demands yr standard reggae beat. i thought it would be fun to, you know, steal a drumbeat from the real thing.

so, is there such a thing as a drum break in reggae? even in dubbed out things, it seems like the bass just never stops plunking away.

What I would do is get a loop from a track you like, wack it into Propellerhead's Recycle and then use Reason to replicate that same loop using Dr. Rex plugged into Redrum. Essentially, you can use the original rhythms and syncopations but replace the original sounds with your own ones.

too much work.

no, really i just need to build a decent library of drum sounds. then i could do it from scratch.

Jah Lloyd's Herbs of Dub has plenty of bass-free drum breaks

don't know if it would suit your need for a standard reggae beat, but there's a nice Sly Dunbar drum breakdown about 4 mins into "War of the Stars" by Gregory Isaacs
