I haven't heard them all but Approximately Infinite Universe's "conventional" songs and reified funk blew me away last Xmas. I'll either vote for it, POB, or the deeply strange Season of Glass.

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 16:37 (fourteen years ago)

I love AIU, it strikes a great balance between her various strengths.

kinda expect Fly to win this though.

I haven't heard a couple of the Unfinished Music ones and missed everything between Season of Glass and Blueprint fro a Sunrise. Yes, I'm a Witch was pretty great though.

I, Mr. Sneer Joy (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 16:50 (fourteen years ago)

Won't vote cos I've only got Approximately Infinite Universe. It's good though!

seminal fuiud (NickB), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 16:53 (fourteen years ago)

Fly is amazing. So are Plastic Ono Band and Approximately Infinite Universe. And Season of Glass is really great, as well. Kind of expect that one to take it, honestly.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 15 February 2011 16:55 (fourteen years ago)

would've been interesting if she'd kept making records through '75-'80 while John stayed home

I, Mr. Sneer Joy (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 16:56 (fourteen years ago)

um, everybody needs to watch this

I was going to ask if anyone owns Starpeace, supposedly one of her worst.

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 17:01 (fourteen years ago)

Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band
Fly
Season of Glass
Rising
Blueprint for a Sunrise
Yes, I'm a Witch
Open Your Box

^^ own & heard these, first three are untouchable, voted plastic ono band but it's a toss-up between those three

Damn this thread seems so....different without ilxor (ilxor), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 17:11 (fourteen years ago)

kinda bums me out that there is like zero live footage of the POB/Fly era

I, Mr. Sneer Joy (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 17:12 (fourteen years ago)

Of the first five Feeling The Space is the one I couldn't warm to at all: tuneless.

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 18:15 (fourteen years ago)

of the first eight

Gotta vote for "Fly" because DUCK DUCK TRAIN DUCK DUCK TRAAAAAIIN but really love Ringo's stuff on the 1st album. So incredibly raw. Last year I really got into "Life With The Lions" but its really more of a John & Yoko thing. My first intro to Yoko was "Season of Glass" and that album is still one of the most beautiful ones I've ever heard.

Soooo wish The Beatles had made a noise record w Yoko in 1971 instead of splitting.

Me too. Or what i would give for studio footage of Ringo, Klaus, John, and Yoko noising the fuck out!

However, John & Yoko made plenty of experimental films around this period, so there is plenty of visual accompaniment available. Btw, does anyone know about the below clip? Is it official?

Season of Glass for me, with AIU a close second. Walking On Thin Ice compilation is very accessible for anyone looking to get into Yoko, IMO. I never much went for her primal scream stuff, but I do like her pop songs.

I was listening to Life With The Lions and Wedding Album not two weeks ago! (Also gave Two Virgins another try - still hate it.)

POB gets my vote, but yeah Fly comes close.

(Hey, where's "Live Peace in Toronto 1969?)

Oooh! This thread may be the one place people would appreciate this - I convinced my fiance to pose with me in similar garb/style as the Wedding Album cover, with intent to Photoshop ourselves into the cover & print for the wedding!

Will do - haven't done it yet! But I sourced the floppy white hat. ;) Wedding is in August and I'm doing lots of rock and roll photoshopping so will throw it all up here sometime for everyone to see!

hey, I'm just glad someone else is as excited as me! All my friends hate Yoko and their eyes glaze over as soon as they hear "John and Y--"

get new friends

I, Mr. Sneer Joy (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 19:31 (fourteen years ago)

I HATE being confronted with boring and shitty attitudes towards Yoko.
Side two of Live Peace in Toronto is something special.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 15 February 2011 19:32 (fourteen years ago)

Better than Side One!

ilxor gets into jazz (Myonga Vön Bontee), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 19:36 (fourteen years ago)

I used to try and find new friends but eventually I just decided Yoko would be 'headphone music' - my fiance can live with her music, though I've never seen another IRL person who would choose to put on one of her albums. ;)

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 19:39 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, doesn't real life just suck, sometimes! (doesn't 've to be in NYC, either ;)

I am fortunate to have a wife that digs Yoko Ono. Now if we could only find a drummer for my long-fantasized-about Yoko Ono cover band....

I, Mr. Sneer Joy (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 21:21 (fourteen years ago)

xpost - I'm a few miles north of you doing likewise!

t**t, Tuesday, 15 February 2011 22:07 (fourteen years ago)

Other albums may be more adventurous, but Season of Glass makes me feel sadly beautifully human.

Hideous Lump, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 03:07 (fourteen years ago)

OK, make that a few miles WEST of Toronto! (More than a few, actually. Man, I suck at geography/navigation)

ilxor gets into jazz (Myonga Vön Bontee), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 03:23 (fourteen years ago)

Saw Yoko + We Are Plastic Ono Band show last year and it was pretty transcendent. Toss up between AIU and Fly.

Stockhausen's Ekranoplan Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 05:29 (fourteen years ago)

I always enjoyed the irony in the Wedding album..

Basically, side 1 is their version of "John and Marsha" Stan Freberg, and I'm sure John would know exactly that and that Yoko probably didn't.

Mark G, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 09:16 (fourteen years ago)

Alright Myogna, let's start a 2 person campaign to get Yoko to Onotario! :D

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 13:50 (fourteen years ago)

Invite her to your wedding!

xpost - I love that story about the test pressing with the electronic tones being reviewed as part of the album proper.

ilxor gets into jazz (Myonga Vön Bontee), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 14:49 (fourteen years ago)

Oh man! What an idea. I wonder if, like the Queen, she'd send a letter on official letterhead informing me she regrettably is unable to attend. Worth a shot!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 15:21 (fourteen years ago)

Has anyone heard "A Story"? That's the one that was unreleased until recently right...?

Totally would vote for Live Peace in Toronto if it was an option. Since it's not, Fly.

that's not funny. (unperson), Monday, 21 February 2011 21:45 (fourteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Tuesday, 22 February 2011 00:01 (fourteen years ago)

please note that I would have voted for Fly if I had remembered

sleeve, Tuesday, 22 February 2011 00:22 (fourteen years ago)

Damn, I missed this poll but I generally agree with its outcome. The first 3 and Rising are the only ones I particularly care for.

Season of Glass is in the wrong place, and I'm scratching my head about the zero votes for Double Fantasy and Milk & Honey...

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 22 February 2011 00:58 (fourteen years ago)

I like those but was consciously excluding the J&Y albums

Οὖτις, Sunday, 30 July 2017 16:21 (eight years ago)

Plastic Ono is a hard number one, but some of the songs on Approximately Infinite sneak up and gut punch me when I'm not expecting it. 'Smashing My Face' and 'I Want My Love to Rest Tonight' in particular are doing something lyrically that seems initially clumsy and slightly amateurish but that ultimately feels deeply profound and wise, something ineffable that I can't really compare with any other songwriter I'm familiar with.

Great list, and I can think of no more perfect introduction to an artist than "Why."

And with all the occasional recent flare-ups about "OMG PAUL AND RINGO GOT BACK TOGETHER," I am sure I'm not alone in wishing for a Yoko + Ringo reunion.
