Streets with band? an' I was like, "what the f** is this?"

A co-worker of mine who's one of those Weezer-is-God groupies just got back from flying over to Japan to see Weezer at this big festival in Osaka. I'd told her when I saw the schedule "don't miss the Streets" and so she saw them. She reports that they're playing as a full band with drummer, bassist, etc. Like: huh? Can anyone confirm/deny this?

New answers

also please go answer the Brian Wilson v. Richard Carpenter thread my feelings are terribly hurt that it bombed so badly

Hmm... was she familiar with The Streets before the show because there's a chance she's confusing them with another act. That's my first guess at what's happening here.

A very chilling phrase.

as far as i know he played with a full band in dublin recently...
i wasn't at it myself but i heard several people talking about the show...

Ned, would it be different if it were... say... My Bloody Valentine? wink wink

i saw the streets at reading yesterday. indeed a live band, but no tight-eq's on session drums. still very dingy and scratchy sound. mike skinner does have a slightly cheesy stage presence (call-response 'oi-oi's) but this was only their third full show.

It might be different if MBV had spent the last couple of years on tour everywhere else already, Nath. ;-) Or if it weren't for the fact that Rivers Cuomo in Japan suggests a fox in the henhouse.

The Mercury Music Prize is just around the corner...

Is true. And they were fucking fantastic at Reading, aside from Skinner's smoochie back-up singer when he started to mellisma like Robbie Craig or Craig David (just about held back from purring "The Stre-ee-ets on your festival stage", but only just).

"Let's Push Things Forward" --> Specials' "Ghost Town" was possibly the most inspired thing about the whole weekend (apart from Peaches jumping into the crowd at 4pm on Friday, covered in fake blood, and punching some kid who tried to grope her).

The Streets were truly fantastic, better than the album, oi-ois and all, even if Morgan Nicholls was the bass player (not that I could see fuck all). Pity fucking Offspring were so loud it caused an unwelcome soundclash in ye tent. And Frank Skinner's co-singer was fine, adding cheese with ease. As an old man I was hoping that Bananarama might have joined in with the new Funboy Three. (The band was bass, drums and keys/samples BTW, not a Beck soul revue). Peaches (forty) was probably punching some scared tripping virgin, flashing back to the last wedding he went to. Authentic quote I heard over the weekend from a woman who's worked with the Peachy one- "She's always going on about sex but no one actually wants to sleep with her".

he wasn't a kid he was some old bloke.. and anyway the most inspired moment of the weekend was you grabbing Simon Fishy Price by his stoopid dangly bunches and screaming "CUNT!!!" in his face. or dont you remember that?

the ghost town thing was good but it just made me wonder if he was doing it as a comment on reviewers who constantly refer to him as the new specials/one man specials yada yada.

The best bit of the Dublin gig (which I am liking more as I come to realise it was his first proper gig) was Push It -> Let's Push Things Forward.

two months pass...
I caught The Streets last night in Amsterdam a major inspiration for my music. Backed by a drummer, keyboard player, bassist, backdrop projectionist and a fellow MC/backing singer Skinner put on quite a show. Lots of laddish larking around with his co-mc, and increasingly desperate attempts to score some ‘Charley’ (‘we’ll pay the going rate’.)

Initial scepticism of The Streets as ‘live act’ evaporated 30 seconds into ‘Turn The Page’. They conjured up a heady brew; powerful bass-heavy riffing that did much of O.P.M. justice. Personal fave ‘All Got Our Runnings’ was magnificent. Well impressed.

stevie nixed to thread? did you get to "The Box"?

Jeff W, Monday, 25 November 2002 16:54 (twenty-three years ago)

oh yeah it was fantastic. i even liked it when they went off stage and let the videoclip do the *work*. the only downsides to it were the brevity of tge show (one hour and fifteen min?!?), the pathetic "what's belgium all about? BEEEEEEER" (oh PUH LEEZ), no new material... and that's it. jeff, sorry i missed you.

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 25 November 2002 17:48 (twenty-three years ago)
