Well, (sigh) between John Legend and Amy Winehouse, I guess...

Mark G, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 12:32 (fourteen years ago)

Oh, I guess Adele still has legs...

Mark G, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 12:32 (fourteen years ago)

this is tough, John Legend's 2nd album is my favorite out of these artists but Alicia and Maroon 5 and Evanescence are pretty good singles artists too.

some dude, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 12:58 (fourteen years ago)

The Esperanza Spalding win reminds me of the Alicia Keys win. I remember no one really paying attention to Songs in A Minor until after she won the award. I get the feeling that Esperanza will have a longer shelf life than most of the people who participated in the Sunday Grammy's show.

Has No Shame (MintIce), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 17:03 (fourteen years ago)

huh, only one artist I outright DISLIKE

I wouldn't have expected that

DJP, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 17:07 (fourteen years ago)

voted legend

that's pretty hilariously wrong. Songs In A Minor was certified platinum in August 2001, before her Grammy nominations, and was certified 5 times platinum in March 2002, a week after her Grammy wins. it was a huge blockbuster album before and completely independent of that award.

Whiney G. Wudangquan (some dude), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 17:41 (fourteen years ago)

It was definitely a blockbuster before her award, but you don't think hitting the 5x platinum mark a week AFTER her win had something to do with it? I mean, you are 100% correct that it was a hit prior to her BNA, but it definitely went to a higher level after that so you can't really say it was "completely independent" of the award. Probably going to vote for Legend.

I don't think any album sold 4 million copies in a week tho...

maroon 5 SLIGHTLY over alicia

I don't think any album sold 4 million copies in a week tho...

Well, yeah, wasn't trying to imply that, but I'm certain it had a huge bump during that week after.

Carrie Underwood, for her first two albums.

it hit 4x platinum in November, before the Grammy nominations were announced.

i mean there are lots of artists that have gotten a significant bump in sales and/or profile by the Grammys, Alicia Keys is just an amazingly bad example

Whiney G. Wudangquan (some dude), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 17:57 (fourteen years ago)

"Fallin'" was Number One for weeks that summer. Even if you didn't know "Alicia Keys" wrote and sang it, the thing was inescapable.

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 17:58 (fourteen years ago)

think i might vote winehouse, though i might like keys' best moments a bit more than winehouse's?

lex pretend, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 18:01 (fourteen years ago)

Grammys OTM re Esperanza Spalding
Hadn't heard her before four days ago

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 20:23 (fourteen years ago)

oh wait i think i strongly dislike 2 of these so your chances just doubled

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 20:24 (fourteen years ago)

ha maybe I haven't been as vocal about how much I fucking detest Carrie Underwood as I think I have

because seriously I could just spend days talking about how terrible she is, on every level

DJP, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 20:28 (fourteen years ago)

^^^ how I feel about Alicia Keys.

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 20:30 (fourteen years ago)

i am so blissfully unaware of her that i dont know to dislike her!

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 20:30 (fourteen years ago)

uh carrie underwood not alicia keys btw

my dislike is deeply invested in winehouse and evanescence

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 20:31 (fourteen years ago)

Carrie Underwood makes Amy Winehouse seem like Diamanda Galas and Evanescence seem like Danielle Dax

DJP, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 20:33 (fourteen years ago)

thanks a lot, you shit: now I've got Evanescence singing "Tomorrow Never Knows" tormenting me.

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 20:35 (fourteen years ago)

maroon 5

I still love Norah Jones, screw you guys!

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 20:57 (fourteen years ago)

evanescence had two classic singles in a row so i will vote for them

teledyldonix, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 20:58 (fourteen years ago)

tellysavalas (some dude), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 22:04 (fourteen years ago)

Winehouse > Spalding > Legend > Keys > Maroons > Jones > Underwood > Evanescence > Adele

Don't know Zac Brown Band.

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 22:28 (fourteen years ago)

you dislike adele that much?!

lex pretend, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 22:30 (fourteen years ago)

All the others have at least one song I like, which is more than I can say for her.

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 22:31 (fourteen years ago)

Basically, if you are a young British "soul" singer whose name does not rhyme with "gamy nineblouse", I hate you is how I break it down to an extent.

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 22:33 (fourteen years ago)

I've actually never heard of two of them....(Legend and Zac Brown)

sonofstan, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 22:35 (fourteen years ago)

if all of these artists had albums coming out today, alicia keys' is the only one i'd give a shit about

een, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 23:20 (fourteen years ago)

I worked in a record store when the Alicia Keys album came out, and we sold a ton of it on preorder before it was released. I don't know what kind of advanced marketing they did, but it worked.

if there is a King Moaty, apparently he is huge into slapstick. (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 17 February 2011 00:35 (fourteen years ago)

first one wasn't released in the US til later, was it?

tellysavalas (some dude), Thursday, 17 February 2011 01:14 (fourteen years ago)

Frank wasn't released in the states until after Back to Black took off. This was Spalding's third though.

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Thursday, 17 February 2011 01:22 (fourteen years ago)

i don't think anyone's ever gonna beat Shelby Lynne winning BNA for her 6th album, though.

tellysavalas (some dude), Thursday, 17 February 2011 01:25 (fourteen years ago)

which two?

actually now that i have checked wikipedia i realize that they were apparently not actually in a row. i was thinking "bring me to life" and "my immortal"

teledyldonix, Thursday, 17 February 2011 06:45 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i kinda figured that's what you meant (although personally i like the one between them, "Going Under," more, and the later one "Call Me When You're Sober" best of all).

some dude, Monday, 21 February 2011 04:13 (fourteen years ago)

Amy Winehouse for me, "Back in Black" is one of my favorite albums of the decade.

love John Legend's "Once Again", but really am not a huge fan of "Get Lifted".

The Grammy voting panel, I guess.

Mark G, Tuesday, 22 February 2011 12:07 (fourteen years ago)
