I worked really hard on making sure every possible perspective would be covered in these poll options, I think these results will be really illuminating.

I am not Geir. Me luvs riddim. I think that is why I'm drawn to genres like hip-hop, death metal, and latin music, cuz of its percussive nature.

I also get bothered when a singer changes the rhythm or cadence of the melody they sing from the original as my ears are 'expecting' to hear it that way.

Also Geir is a computer program similar to Watson. This is why he is so linear...and loves things with 1s and 0s in the title

To be honest, starting yet another thread about Geir and rhythm is k-lame and just about the most boring bit of trollbait I can remember and the only real reason I'm keeping it open is because it'll be amusing when 'I Am Geir Hongro' wins the poll.

fwiw i was trolling all the vague useless "how important are lyrics/vocals" poll threads and am not that big on Geir jokes in general but it seemed like an easy reference point for joke poll options. but i don't really care, lock or delete or whatever if you want.

Whiney G. Wudangquan (some dude), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 15:39 (fifteen years ago)

heaven forbid people talk about music on a board titled "I Love Music"

well done putting a stop to that, we owe you a debt

DJP, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 15:42 (fifteen years ago)

oh i didn't realize criticizing the way a poll thread was created meant squashing all discussion of its topic, or that humorously commenting on a thread instantly prevented people who like it from continuing to post on it. sorry guys, i'll be more careful in the future :(

Whiney G. Wudangquan (some dude), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 15:53 (fifteen years ago)

Glad you specified "rhythm" and not "beat" (or "beats") because rhythm is really important to me personally (tho not necessarily necessary). I was listening to Cecil Taylor just last night and enjoying the momentum - the undeniable sense that the music's going forward in space, even without any identifiable time signature or bar lines to use as reference points.

Geir, what are your thoughts on 'The Brazilian'?

It is OK, but, you know, Genesis were around 10 years past their prime at the time of the "Invisible Touch" album.

It's not a very good analogy, given rhythm is an essential component of music, while lyrics are strictly speaking extra-musical. (Yeah, okay, that's very strictly speaking.) Also, making a distinction between the importance of lyrics and the importance of vocals makes perfect sense to me (but see other thread). As ILM goes, I don't see where the lyrics/vocal thread is particularly useless.

_Rudipherous_, Thursday, 17 February 2011 01:41 (fifteen years ago)

just wait for the bass poll

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 17 February 2011 01:45 (fifteen years ago)

Rudipherous it's not an analogy or equating vocals with rhythm. it's the idea of turning a topic, which is so broad that it's hard to get a productive conversation out of it to begin with, into a totally unnecessary poll in which the results don't really provide any kind of conclusive evidence of anything or edifying perspective on popular opinion.

tellysavalas (some dude), Thursday, 17 February 2011 01:57 (fifteen years ago)

How important is font size to you as a poster?

sarah, palin and tall (San Te), Thursday, 17 February 2011 01:58 (fifteen years ago)

I like rhythm when I like it. I'm fine with a minimum of rhythm if other stuff commands my attention--primarily melody, but I probably even love a few songs with little rhythm and not much melody. When music becomes all rhythm--James Brown--it starts to lose me. I hear rhythm in Husker Du and R.E.M. Oh my god--I am Geir Hongro!
