J0rdan S., Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:17 (fourteen years ago)

wtf is a song called "inside your heaven"

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:18 (fourteen years ago)

Bad Aerosmith better than good disposable pop. Yeah, the Aerosong in question is also bad, disposable pop. But I am a rockist, so bite me.

NYCNative, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:18 (fourteen years ago)

The advent of American Idol makes this already hilarious list even funnier

DJP, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:31 (fourteen years ago)

there are three solid 10/10s in this list! that is more than many lists one will encounter in life.

1. "fantasy" - the remix is probably one of the most ~important~ moments in 90s pop, and huge classic to boot. how great a lyric is "images of rapture/creep into me slowly"? so mariah - also "i get kinda hectic inside". "hectic"! and odb's mariah/pacifier rhyme 4eva. original is good too though i haven't listened in years.
2. "doo wop (that thing)" - yeah also classic - i love the combination of pursed-lips matriarchal righteousness in the verses with the unmoored melody of the chorus - the swinging beat also really works, reminding us that despite L's disapproval it's only so her audience can celebrate themselves.
3. "honey" - that bassline! that piano! the breakdown! the way the chorus switches up to that slinky "honey all over me" melody midway through. mariah you're on fire, i'll prob always consider butterfly her god period.
.....
4. "hold it against me" - it's ok. it's not great but it's better than "born this way".
5. "i'll be missing you" - idk it makes me think about biggie, and about missing him. it always seemed like a clumsily sincere tribute to him from his wife and best friend. i can't hate it.

i can't remember whitney's "exhale" but i loved "my love is your love" from the same era. i assume "i believe" is fantasia's schmaltzy winner's ballad off AI but she went on to much greater things so it gets a pass too.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:37 (fourteen years ago)

lex otm about "Doo Wop" and "Fantasy."

My votes:

Fantasy
Exhale (Shoop Shoop) -- a classy ballad, in the best sense.
Doo Wop (That Thing)
Honey
You Are Not Alone

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:39 (fourteen years ago)

looks like Taylor Hicks effectively killed Idol's cultural supremacy, feel bad for Lee DeWeezy

herbal bert (herb albert), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:40 (fourteen years ago)

"Exhale" is an incredibly stupid song, tbh. She sings it pretty well but it really can't mask the fact that it's super dumb, lyrically and melodically.

DJP, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:41 (fourteen years ago)

To me it's the apex of the Babyface sound.

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:42 (fourteen years ago)

Taylor Hicks — "Do I Make You Proud Ashamed to be an American"

fixed

never meant to heart anyone (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:42 (fourteen years ago)

(It doesn't really help that pretty much every other "Waiting To Exhale" song was much, much better, particularly MJB's "Not Gon' Cry")

DJP, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:42 (fourteen years ago)

the remix is probably one of the most ~important~ moments in 90s pop

I can kinda see this actually - was this before or after the Mary J/Method Man "All I Need"...? it was probably bigger, I assume.

never meant to heart anyone (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:44 (fourteen years ago)

it feels sorta unfair to compare anything to "not gon' cry" - that song is pretty much a masterpiece, still completely devastating.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:44 (fourteen years ago)

"i'll be missing you" - idk it makes me think about biggie, and about missing him.

Tyler/Perry's "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" (jaymc), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:45 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i think my knowledge is limited as i wasn't thinking in these terms at the time, being 12 years old, but i'd say mjb pioneered the r&b/hip-hop fusion but with mariah being who she was (and moving from what she'd done into having guest rappers, hip-hop beats &c), it was huge in making it fully mainstream?

lex pretend, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:46 (fourteen years ago)

yes, "Not Gon' Cry" is a better song.

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:47 (fourteen years ago)

"you are not alone" is such a great song

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:50 (fourteen years ago)

Heretical remark: "You Are Not Alone" is one of the few solid Kelly songs.

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:52 (fourteen years ago)

like, definitely my two favorite songs in fifth grade were that & "kiss from a rose"

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:52 (fourteen years ago)

fuck you, alfred

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:52 (fourteen years ago)

also "c'mon ride the train"

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:52 (fourteen years ago)

which at least debuted at #1 in my heart

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:53 (fourteen years ago)

did this never happen before 1995?

Darin, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:53 (fourteen years ago)

The Beatles were the last. It was a HUGE deal when MJ debuted.

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:53 (fourteen years ago)

I vote for Taylor Hicks, because it's the most bizarre piece of garbage here and that says a lot.

Darin, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:55 (fourteen years ago)

The Beatles were the last.

This never happened. MJ was the first.

Tyler/Perry's "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" (jaymc), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 20:01 (fourteen years ago)

Honey! It's the sound of freedom.

prolego, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 20:06 (fourteen years ago)

in retrospect it does seem like a big crossover moment - Mary J had already been claiming her "hip hop soul" title but Mariah was from like a previous generation, a well established R&B icon.

never meant to heart anyone (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 20:08 (fourteen years ago)

well, the difference in age is not significant.

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

I didn't mean generation in the sense of how old they were - Mariah came on the scene just a couple years earlier than Mary J, but it seems like she was almost from a different era

never meant to heart anyone (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 20:20 (fourteen years ago)

Taylor Hicks — "Do I Make You Proud Ashamed to be an American"

is this song about being proud to be an american? i thought it was more like "do i make you proud that i am such a great singer"

Damn this thread seems so....different without ilxor (ilxor), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 20:27 (fourteen years ago)

lol I think the age difference reference was between you and Lex, Shakey, since Mariah and Mary J Blige are the same ahe

DJP, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 20:29 (fourteen years ago)

er, age

DJP, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 20:30 (fourteen years ago)

is this song about being proud to be an american? i thought it was more like "do i make you proud that i am such a great singer"

I hear it as a drunken anthem for rednecks with daddy issues

Darin, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 20:35 (fourteen years ago)

"oh look Taylor's in the backyard yellin' at papa's window again"

Darin, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 20:37 (fourteen years ago)

1) doo wop
2) you are not alone
3) my heart will go on
4) fantasy

Just saying, dude has been on record for years as a vocal hater of Lauryn Hill; I guess you've never brought her up in a conversation with him before?

I guess not.
