It's missing "Long Distance Runaround", "Tempus Fugit", and "Siberian Khatru" (all of which I would have considered) but I guess I have to just pick "Roundabout" as boring as that is, it's such a catchy song with a great guitar part. Steve Howe must have some long ass fingers because that shit is hard to play

frogbs, Friday, 18 February 2011 15:22 (fourteen years ago)

ah shit i hear "Long Distance Runaround" all the time on classic rock radio, shoulda known some of their bigger 70s songs wouldn't be listed among their official singles

"Sweetness" vs "Going for the One" vs "Pwner of a Pwnly Heart"

Elmer Fuiud (Noodle Vague), Friday, 18 February 2011 15:54 (fourteen years ago)

"Yours Is No Disgrace" would have been my pick if it was there.

I still listen to 'The Yes Album', 'Fragile', and 'Close To The Edge' all the time.

voted "And You And I"

nicky lo-fi, Friday, 18 February 2011 16:43 (fourteen years ago)

Bear in mind when voting that a lot of the early 70s classics were heavily edited to fit on a 7". 'Roundabout', 'America' and 'And You & I' would all have suffered from this.

Voted 'America' anyway though, as I prefer the edit.

Jeff W, Friday, 18 February 2011 17:51 (fourteen years ago)

"Roundabout" because the words make me out 'n' out.

I'm sure this is true (and in Yes's singles discography on Wikipedia, "Good People" is listed as "I've Seen All Good People: Your Move" to denote that apparently just the first part was released as a single), but when I hear these songs on classic rock radio now they pretty much always play the entire LP versions.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Thursday, 24 February 2011 00:01 (fourteen years ago)

Would definitely vote Heart of the Sunrise if it were in this poll. Since not, Roundabout.

The Corner Stander, The Suggest Ban Hammer (Hurting 2), Thursday, 24 February 2011 00:09 (fourteen years ago)

I had a dream, once a dream...
...that I was part of the 'Yes Army,' a rival gang to the Kiss Army. We had matching navy blue t-shirts. On the back, in white, was a couplet from Don't Kill the Whale:
In beauty, vision, do we offer much?
If we reason with destiny – gonna lose our touch!
The Kiss Army was coming to a bowling ally, to bowl, so we all hid behind the pins, and when they least expected it, we came out with switchblades. Rumble ensued.

wizards of wonder are the keepers of knowledge (Abbbottt), Thursday, 24 February 2011 03:23 (fourteen years ago)

"Roundabout"; I love "I've Seen All Good People" starting at the 3:30 mark (verified via Grooveshark).

clemenza, Thursday, 24 February 2011 03:28 (fourteen years ago)

"Roundabout". A Yes singles poll feels rather pointless though, because, other than "Owner Of a Lonely Heart", Yes have never primarily been a singles band.

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 24 February 2011 03:28 (fourteen years ago)

Going for the Going For The One one because it's my favourite of those songs, no other reason. As Geir said Yes ain't fer singles so this is sort of a weird decision.

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Thursday, 24 February 2011 03:31 (fourteen years ago)

Wasn't "Total Mass Retain" a single? I've certainly heard a radio edit.

Voted "Roundabout", just ahead of "Owner Of A Lonely Heart".

B-side of "America"

Sweetness:

Sounds like a song that could be featured on a Wes Anderson soundtrack.

Moka, Thursday, 24 February 2011 10:53 (fourteen years ago)

it featured on a Vincent Gallo soundtrack

Nulty By Nature (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 24 February 2011 10:57 (fourteen years ago)

Yes, just checked and it appeared on Buffalo 66. Weird because I saw the movie and don't recall hearing the song... known it since I was a child because I have an uncle who is a huge Yes fan and he kept giving me copies of their albums. The movie was boring me to tears tho so if the song appears near the end I was probably not paying attention anymore.

Moka, Thursday, 24 February 2011 12:24 (fourteen years ago)

Haha the song is featured when the credits are rolling apparently.

Moka, Thursday, 24 February 2011 12:26 (fourteen years ago)

Maybe I left at that point... that song would have propelled my enjoyment of the movie a few points up.

Moka, Thursday, 24 February 2011 12:27 (fourteen years ago)

Is 'Owner Of A Lonely Heart' their only truly succesful single?

Moka, Thursday, 24 February 2011 12:28 (fourteen years ago)

No "Roundabout" went US #2.

Roundabout just went to US #13, Geir (sez Wiki).

I definitely need to get into some more Yes soon...

one of my favorite band names, for starters.

hapshash jar tempo (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 25 February 2011 00:01 (fourteen years ago)

"Haha the song is featured when the credits are rolling apparently."

They also jam YES when Gallo walks into the strip club to kill that dude.
Trippy scene, and the YES fits in perfectly.

nicky lo-fi, Friday, 25 February 2011 12:52 (fourteen years ago)

it's "heart of the sunrise" then. what a great song. one of the best

looks like i was the only vote for "homeworld." the ladder doesn't get much love, but i can't think of many albums that good recorded by bands thirty years into it. there are some classic yes songs on it. supposedly they have a new album coming out this summer . . . with a dude singing they drafted from a yes cover band! very yes

reggie (qualmsley), Friday, 25 February 2011 13:38 (fourteen years ago)

I should check out more Yes; I fuck with the early 70s stuff but I think the most recent album I had heard was Union which I didn't like so much...

Actually, I'm long overdue to listen to more of the early stuff too; I'm not sure I've ever listened to an entire Yes album all the way through...

hapshash jar tempo (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 25 February 2011 14:16 (fourteen years ago)

union is a mess -- they had so many members by then that they'd broken up into two camps. they decided to bury the hatchet and share the songs they'd been working on, hence the title. there's some good stuff on there -- "silent talking," "holding on," "take the water to the mountain" -- but mostly it's just overstuffed and confused. honestly, the only yes album since 90125 i've been able to fully get into is the ladder

reggie (qualmsley), Friday, 25 February 2011 14:27 (fourteen years ago)

you should revive the Prog-rock Listening Club, reggie

hapshash jar tempo (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 25 February 2011 14:38 (fourteen years ago)

is that this?

This is the PROG ROCK Listening Club - New albums every Friday

can we post youtube videos there? that's about as far as my technical skills go

reggie (qualmsley), Friday, 25 February 2011 15:28 (fourteen years ago)

who the hell voted "Don't Kill the Whale"

frogbs, Friday, 25 February 2011 15:33 (fourteen years ago)

xp to reggie: yeah that's it; you don't even have to post youtubes. All you need to do is pick three albums and post the album covers...if you have a problem with that, then you can get someone else to help; I'd probably be willing...
