I had a revelation last fall, see, and it was called "What About Us" and it sounded like Massive Attack doin' anal with Björk.

You know why, we don't cover mainstream rap. A Cam'ron review would be totally out of place and weird.

Ryan

simon trife (simon_tr), Monday, 26 August 2002 09:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah give it to us!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 26 August 2002 10:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Rating: 8.7

Now I'mconfuddled....

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 26 August 2002 10:03 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah id like to find the dude who wrote that!!

simon trife (simon_tr), Monday, 26 August 2002 10:10 (twenty-three years ago)

scandal!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 26 August 2002 10:27 (twenty-three years ago)

i often wonder what would happen if you put, say, a nelly album in, like, a tigerbeat6 sleeve or something, whether that would make 'certain people' like it more. you know, make it okay for them to like?

gareth (gareth), Monday, 26 August 2002 10:28 (twenty-three years ago)

probably gareth. hasn't warp released anti-pop consortium alb in the UK (i wonder how many ppl who like electronic and don't consider rap to be their 'thing' would buy it).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 26 August 2002 10:32 (twenty-three years ago)

yes these are the kind of fuckers who are all 'but sadly the cliched bling bling excesses of ludacris are no match for timbaland's avant garde mouse on mars-influenced soundscapes...'

simon trife (simon_tr), Monday, 26 August 2002 10:38 (twenty-three years ago)

yo check it some modern rnb is as weird as the most far out warp idm artist!!

simon trife (simon_tr), Monday, 26 August 2002 10:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Yawn.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 26 August 2002 11:23 (twenty-three years ago)

''Yawn.''

well, it is another (yes, another) 'isn't pitchfork shit?'-type thread so Yawn...

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 26 August 2002 11:30 (twenty-three years ago)

dude, LAST FALL!!

simon trife (simon_tr), Monday, 26 August 2002 11:46 (twenty-three years ago)

"throbbing like bursting genitals": surely "throbbing like throbbing genitals"? i mean the bass sound and yr genitals are either throbbing or bursting, choose one.

mitch lastnamewithheld, Monday, 26 August 2002 12:21 (twenty-three years ago)

"throbbing like turgid genitals" would have been more physiologically appropriate.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 26 August 2002 12:34 (twenty-three years ago)

"throbbing like turgid genitals" would have been more physiologically appropriate.

Throbbing like surgeon generals?

Jody Beth Rosen, Monday, 26 August 2002 12:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Is that really a Ryan email? He told me in person once that he wanted to touch on mainstream hip-hop now and then.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 26 August 2002 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Robbing the surging mineral?

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 26 August 2002 15:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, hey, I just read the review and I'm glad he wrote it -- not for anything having to do with Gold Chains or anything about the review of the record itself, but because he's now truly gone public on the Pitchfork readership and said that he can enjoy mainstream hip-hop and r&b.

Although shock and horror, man, he's all over "What About Us" but just doesn't appreciate "Full Moon."

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 26 August 2002 15:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I also liked the review, even though I know he wrote it in about 15 minutes while we AIMing on Friday. Still, inspired populism is still inspired.

dleone (dleone), Monday, 26 August 2002 15:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I like it too, which is a nice rarity for Pitchfork. (not you Nabisco)

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 26 August 2002 15:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Eh. A bit too "white man in hammersmith.." for my taste.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 26 August 2002 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

fuck it. lets do threds on EVERY SINGLE pitchfork review. The reviewers might learn sumfink.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 26 August 2002 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

like a parishioner who just masturbated for the first time.

(nb this is a good thing)

Josh (Josh), Monday, 26 August 2002 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

fuck it. lets do threds on EVERY SINGLE pitchfork review. The reviewers might learn sumfink.

Never a truer word was spoken in jest...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 26 August 2002 18:20 (twenty-three years ago)

xo maura ox: god pitchfork's 'tone' is so indie-frat boy
auf zur disko: i KNOW
auf zur disko: it gets worse!
xo maura ox: god this is making me want to throw things.
auf zur disko: did you get to the part about 'bursting genitals'?
auf zur disko: it's so repressed!
xo maura ox: yes.
xo maura ox: they all need to get laid
xo maura ox: let's take up a collection
xo maura ox: the pitchfork hooker fund
auf zur disko: haha i wonder if they would run 'simon's' cam'ron interview if we told them cam'ron was on tigerbeat6

geeta (geeta), Monday, 26 August 2002 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Finally I totally agree with Julio: surely ILM has better things to do than monitoring Pitchfork every day for something to pick on. Surely you realize what it means for the great ILM-Pitchfork hatefest that ILMers talk about Pitchfork pieces at least twice a week? ILM goes "they suck," Pitchfork goes "hahaha they suck, and they still have to have opinions on what we write," and those of us who have connections with both just sigh and sigh.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 26 August 2002 19:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Also I don't know how Dare or Mark or Mr. Leone feel, but it is so annoying when the Pitchforkers say "fuck ILM, I hate every one of those wankers" and then ILMers say "fuck Pitchfork, those guys all need to get laid" -- I mean, FUCK, we're standing RIGHT HERE, for Christ's sake!

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 26 August 2002 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

i gotta say, even though i stand by the ims posted above, that nabisco and julio have a point. i am a staunch supporter of the 'ignore it and it'll go away or at least away from me' philosophy.

maura (maura), Monday, 26 August 2002 19:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay fine, Maura, any efforts on your part to help me get laid more often certainly wouldn't hurt.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 26 August 2002 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Although if it's a hooker fund can you just divvy it up and send me my portion as a check or money order?

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 26 August 2002 19:45 (twenty-three years ago)

we're standing RIGHT HERE

Actually, I just figured that unless you have the domain name in your email, nobody knows who you are. Either that, or the internet really is a heartless playground of social banshees. Who need to get laid.

dleone (dleone), Monday, 26 August 2002 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

N**suh in Buy Own Hookers SHOCKAH!!

Dave M. (rotten03), Monday, 26 August 2002 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

'indie hookers' would probably be cheaper, but i dunno if such a thing exists

geeta (geeta), Monday, 26 August 2002 19:50 (twenty-three years ago)

"Indie hookers" would be doing it for the art, man, not for the cash.

Oh and true, obviously not everyone knows what company they're in. Or follows who's writing where, and such. It wasn't so much a complaint about people saying those things -- more just pointing out how weird and funny and annoying it is to hear the same things from both sides.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 26 August 2002 19:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Hahaha and "indie johns" would sit around saying "actually her pimp has a distribution deal with a corporate pimp in Atlanta, she's just another pre-fab pop ho."

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 26 August 2002 19:55 (twenty-three years ago)

nitsuh shut the fuck up!

simon trife (simon_tr), Monday, 26 August 2002 20:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh and also Ethan's mom etc. etc.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 26 August 2002 20:25 (twenty-three years ago)

shitty pfork writers in defending shitty pfork writing shocker!!

simon trife (simon_tr), Monday, 26 August 2002 20:30 (twenty-three years ago)

''Finally I totally agree with Julio: surely ILM has better things to do than monitoring Pitchfork every day for something to pick on.''

Well that took a while but we got there Nabisco!

Anyway, I started reading pitchfork before evah setting foot on ILM (at first I didn't think much of the internet, still don't in some ways) and I always thought it was a bit of a joke myself. Those 10/10 album reviews, Loveelss as the album of the 90s...the radiohead reviews, Miles davis Sketches of spain...so much shit.

I stopped reading it and then i read the jap psych article, which seemed to be a rehash of alan cummings' article on jap psych on the wire and I never pay much attention to it, though I want to read the thread Tim finney started, there seemed to be some good stuff coming out of that.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 26 August 2002 20:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Hahaha Ethan being a dick shocker!

God, Ethan, it's good to have you back: keep in mind that as a one-time Pitchforkista Maura owes you hookers too.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 26 August 2002 20:51 (twenty-three years ago)

pre-fab-pop-ho heckno

mark s (mark s), Monday, 26 August 2002 20:59 (twenty-three years ago)

God, these threads are becoming so pathetic. There needs to be an ILM-Pitchfork crossover, in the manner of the Marvel-D.C. cosmic comic-book convergences ... old heroes clash, alliances are forged, margins shifted ..

Dare, Monday, 26 August 2002 21:17 (twenty-three years ago)

.. and star-crossed critics fall in love!

Dare, Monday, 26 August 2002 21:18 (twenty-three years ago)

ilm and pitchfork lurve each other deeply

if that's not obvious by now i don't know what is

their timelines and trajectories might not be in simpatico but the only thing that can inspire such hatred is latent/forlorn recognition

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 26 August 2002 21:33 (twenty-three years ago)

why don't we all have sex and get it over with!! (ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew)

mark s (mark s), Monday, 26 August 2002 21:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it can be playful fun poking. Especially as this review seems like a followup to Ryan's Andrew WK review which I recall was excellent in expressing what he thought -- "mmm.. yeah... oh shit this is mindless party-pop! get it away! get it away!"

It makes me want to hear Gold Chains, which nothing else really did. With dj/rupture on the T6 tip now, does this mean they might cross into something rilly interesting?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 00:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it can be playful fun poking.

Something we all dream about.

It makes me want to hear Gold Chains

I would not leap into this decision blindly.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 00:59 (twenty-three years ago)

well i see 'ilm' has spoken

simon trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 01:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not sure why pitchfork seems content to stagnate.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 03:42 (twenty-three years ago)

the thing about pfork is it does have stuff going for it i think, in a way, the pulling up of it that goes on here is because of the overlap, because it can be good (i mean, no one pulls up nme or q reviews all the time do they?). we have, what, 6 pforkers here, and they take the criticism really well in my opinion (of course, it probably helps that very little of the specific criticism isn't aimed at, say, n***** or dleone)

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 06:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Is this Neko Case review the same thing again, only with different words?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 14:25 (twenty-three years ago)

three months pass...
"throbbing like bursting genitals" sounds fine to me now.
