In an ongoing attempt to save old unanswered threads, I'm going to turn this into a Fall: Classic or Dud. Or hell, S&D as well. I own only the Brix period, but fairly thoroughly in that range. Of them, Perveted By Language and Bend Sinister are my favorites. However, the live Oswald Defense Lawyer might make the album it draws from, largely The Frenz Experiment, may favorite. The riff on Bremen Nacht, I think, is out of this world. Also, is Guest Informant their best track ever, or just a novelty one-off?

"Guest Informant" is their best Brix-era track and isnt different enough to the other stuff to class as a 'novelty one-off'. Once at school everyone had to bring a track in to Music for people to hear and talk about. I was feeling bloodyminded and brought in "Guest Informant" which at the time was the 'furthest-out' thing I owned. Did the trick nicely.

My favourite Fall record is the single "Lie Dream of a Casino Soul". Not only does it sound far out, it also contains the couplet:

"On the way back to my slum canyon/

I saw turrets of victorian wealth"

Which I think is the best lyric ever written.

Class Struggle in the Demi-Material World: a Study

He lost touch with FRIGHT, I think. He can fake it — he's a professional — but he doesn't feel, not as something he actually might any longer turn a corner into, and NOT ESCAPE.

My favourite Fall albums are, rather boringly, Grotesque (After The Gramme) and Hex Enduction Hour.

The "Wings" / "Kicker Conspiracy" double-A is the second best single of the 1980s.

normans bang on about lie dream... and that couplet

robin too about wings/kicker conspiracy. wasn't the video for that filmed at turf moor?

basically comes down to this:

77-83: unbelievably classic
83-90: still classic, just not quite so much as before
91-: ok, but diminshing returns

totales turn and hip priest & kamerads are as good as records get, voted for both in the ilm poll, rather in vain it seems.

best song at moment for me probably Winter (hostel maxi) - brilliant, peel session version even better i think

Well written revview but i don't get the Pixies reference. I think, in that regard, Pixies were actually influenced by The Group.
