Bad Brains vs. Black Flag vs. Flipper

I'm not well-versed in Flipper tbh, but I've heard enough to know that this is really a contest between Bad Brains and Black Flag for me.

Flipper = Bad Brains > Black Flag in my book. Voted Flipper just because I'm annoyed with some of my Washington family at the moment.

see bad brains - black dots is one of my favorite things ever ever ever, but the overall black flag catalog is def better. and flipper is fucking flipper so i guess i just have no idea what to do here

ROIR tape vs. Damaged vs. Generic Flipper. basically my three favorite punk/hc albums of all time. i really don't think i can vote here.

I'm gonna do myself a service and hear Generic Flipper (finally).

Okay, just two songs into Generic and I can already tell I'm going to be listening to this a lot this week.

Bad Brains, no contest. Loved Flipper, semi-respected Black Flag, but seeing/hearing Bad Brains live was best.

i am lucky (and old) enough to have seen all 3 live in their 1982 heyday and with less deliberation than I wouldve guessed the vote comes up

Black Flag. Though the only one I've seen live is Flipper and they were great.

Flipper > Black Flag > Bad Brains (the only one of these bands I've interviewed. They made a great single once.)

(And Black Flag is the only band whose singer -- the one who also plays a dead white separatist on Sons Of Anarchy, to be specific -- wrote an upset letter to the editor about me once.)

Pretty sure Bad Brains are also the only one whose T-shirt I didn't own back in the '80s, but I wouldn't stake my life on that claim.

Curious which single you think is the great one.

Flipper, as noted above. Also for their influence on Rick Rubin, and hence the entire world.

Good people, I need to remind you there is an album called Gone Fishin by Flipper that finally got pressed onto CD legitimately only a couple of years ago. That one seems to never get the props and that one has Sacrifice, The Light The Sound and Talk's Cheap slays nearly as much as Generic. Every home needs one and a copy of the old ROIR live CD.

Generic Flipper is easily my favorite LP from any of the three. And "Get Away"'s my favorite single.

Oh yeah. "Sacrifice" and "One By One" are my favorites but it's a really good record that people seem to miss.

Went with Bad Brains for Pay to Cum and Re-Ignition alone (not to mention a ton of other songs, but those especially).

I've always liked Gone Fishin' too -- pretty sure I even voted for it in Pazz & Jop in 1984 (don't have a copy of that ballot anymore), and I may well have been alone in that. But my second favorite Flipper album (a very close second to Generic) is the singles compilation Sex Bomb Baby, which has "Get Away" and "Ha Ha Ha" on it, along with "Sex Bomb," "Ever," "Sacrifice," plus assorted weird odds and ends.

Never much cared about any Black Flag after Damaged and "Louie Louie" -- Henry annoyed me -- though I'd probably pick up a couple of the later albums now if I saw them for a dollar. Same goes for Bad Brains' I Against I, which I liked okay when it first came out then eventually decided wasn't as good as I'd thought. Always thought their first two albums (incl. the ROIR tape) were decent, but pretty spotty, beyond "Pay To Cum." Never was really convinced by their reggae, and never even heard of Black Dots until I saw this thread yesterday.

production on gone fishing always bugged me, dug the public image flipper and sex bomb baby releases but they were a bit scattershot compared to the perfect punch of album generic

so even though flag could be doltishly heavy-handed and so so self-seriously po-faced, I've got to give it to them for the length + breadth of their discog, and for damaged, and for their impact on the american underground in general, nice logo too

I don't understand that at all.

I realize that the ROIR tape/CD is a watershed moment in rock/hardcore, but I Against I perfects the marriage of styles that Bad Brains pioneered without the odd production/sound of Rock For Light.

This is difficult.
I love all 3.
Especially Black flag's 1984 era. & particularly The Marquee
Or Flipper around the same time, One By One is a fav too.

& Bad Brains onstage in Florida in '87
or Glasgow in '89 followed by a lift to London.
Think my hair wound up like this cos of them

So can't really choose & thought I'd go Flipper cos I thought they'd be the underdog.

Now to see if I can retrieve my black Flag files that were jumped off the active part of the hardrive before Xmas.

Flipper are the Pavement of early Eighties hardcore. Black Flag are the Smashing Pumpkins of early Eighties hardcre. And, the Bad Brains are the...er...uhm...the Living Color of early Eighties hardcore(?). (Voted for the Flips.)

Living Colour barely registered for most of the 90s anyway. To run with this, Bad Brains were probably the Built to Spill of the 90s.

I just listened to Gone Fishin' yesterday!!! It was great.

I understand where you are coming from with that Flipper=Dead of hardcore post, but I think that Ginn has something to say about it:

Yeah, Ginn was the noodliest guitar player in all of punk ever (except maybe the Television dudes).

Ginn was like the Albert Ayler of hardcore guitar.

Flipper > Bad Brains > Black Flag. All are great though!

All three bands have given me so much pleasure(?!)

Cannot do this one justice right now but will return on a non school night whilst cranking them up simultaneously.

All three still do for me in a similar way they did 25/30 years ago - fuck, no , it can't be.

Their latter years withered though in all cases (Flag after My War, Flipper post Gone Fishin' and Bad Brains following Rock fer)I was too young to see any at their prime and probably in the wrong country. I know Flag toured England as did Bad Brains, the latter who i saw way past their best in London around 87/88. Did Flipper ever make it to England with Shatter?

When I interviewed Corey Glover, he told me "When I first started out as a singer, I saw Bad Brains. I saw HR do this double back-flip into the crowd and I almost quit, like, I cannot do this. No way."
