Taking Sides: Gary Numan vs Thomas Dolby.

Two unappreciated proto-electronica groundbreakers unjustly demeaned and forgotten...or two rightfully forgotten one-hit wonder weenies. Some electronic music buff friends insist that the relative obscurity of these two is a crime against humanity.
So: Are Gary and Tommy GRATE or fish-bait?
And who could take the other to the mat in a bloody cage match?

This thread can also double as a contiuation of any Search and Destroy/Classic or Dud thread buried in the depths of the (now inaccessible) Old-ILM archives.

Gary Numan wins, but only because he knew when to quit (but he loses points for coming back).

Gary roolz, Thomas had his points. But then he just sorta...I dunno. The Howard the Duck soundtrack was his Waterloo.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 26 August 2002 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Howard the Duck was alot of peoples Waterloo's. IU'm sure if you walk up to George Lucas and say "Howard the Duck" he'll flinch as if you've struck him with acid-drenched razor wire.

i know i shouldn't on almost every level but i much prefer thomas dolby (and actually rather like "howard the duck") - numan always put me off by coming across as a po faced sort and this usually tends to have an effect on me. why i can't bring myself to listen to lou reed for example...

Hmmm. Is Thomas Dolby more Fun?
His big hit "She Blinded Me With Science" feels more 'joyful' then the glum "Cars"; But then...is Numans 'chilly granduer' what his cult fans find so appealing about him?

Lord Custos Alpha (Lord Custos Alpha), Monday, 26 August 2002 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Dolby wins for the music, and the variety of stuff he's done.Gary would win in the bloody cage match tho'...

Only by cheating. Dolby looks wiry and feral to me.

Lord Custos Alpha (Lord Custos Alpha), Monday, 26 August 2002 20:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Numan v Dolby? Hmm . . . Howard Jones!

Jay Macke (Jay), Monday, 26 August 2002 23:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmmm. A much less eccentric musician; akin to fey, Brit New-wave Don Henley...but in the CAGE, Howard Jones is succcch a 'soft target'...Numan and Dolby would disassemble him like a swimming pool full of starving piranha.

Leave my Gazza alone!

Gary Numan is a genius, while Dolby is just kind of meh.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 10:24 (twenty-three years ago)

define "meh"

Lord Custos Alpha (Lord Custos Alpha), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 14:22 (twenty-three years ago)

When you seek for that really great mustard to put on your sandwich and you realize that you'll have to make do with generic mayonnaise instead.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 14:36 (twenty-three years ago)

"Meh" : How I felt when Gazza Copped Japan's whole schtick for "She's Got Claws".

Hey, he got Mick Karn to play on that album -- it wasn't like he was trying to hide it! ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 17:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey Jay. Keep Howard Jones out of this. Everyone knows he goes head-to-head with Nik Kershaw and they let their haircuts battle it out big stylee!!
