'Suspicious Minds' in a walk. With 'Hey Jude' I have to be in exactly the right mod to listne to it. 'Sus/Mnds' ends up carrying my along even if I started just half listening to the song.

Pretty much. After a fake ending fadeout, although apparently the fadeout was originally the real ending, but people in Vegas were liking the coda at the live shows so they went into the studio and added it on.

Used to get bored by the "Hey Jude" coda, but now view it as an epitome of the Ringo drumming style.

I voted for "Suspicious Minds" but I believe the moment in "Hey Jude" that Ringo hits the hi-hat right before the na-na-nas come in is better than any single moment in "Suspicious Minds"

"Hey Jude" is one of those Beatles songs that often gets mentioned as one of their most insufferable--"Let It Be," "The Long and Winding Road," etc.--but I don't recall ever not liking it. I mean, I've heard it enough that I don't ever put it on voluntarily, but if it comes on the radio, I don't turn it off and it sounds fine. Ditto "Let It Be." (But not "The Long and Winding Road.") I like "Supicious Minds," but I like "Hey Jude" better.

I'd probably take "Kentucky Rain" over "Hey Jude," though.

"Hey Jude" by a mile. Love the song, love the coda-- the general dislike of it on ILM is a complete mystery to me. I consider it a high-water mark in pop. I love it the same way I love Boredoms "Super Shine". Love "Suspicious Minds" too but I didn't even remember that it had a coda.

Never been big on "Suspicious Minds" while "Hey Jude" is great for the first 3 minutes. So this is "Hey Jude". Not sure if I would have picked it ahead of "In The Ghetto" though.

I am biased cos one time I saw a group of peeps with learning disabilities playing "Hey Jude" at a festival and that big loopy coda was one of the coolest, most beautiful things I've ever seen.

Elvis is going to win, easily. Also this poll is a little unfair because the end of SM is about 2 mins whereas HJ has a 4 minute long coda. Much easier to get annoyed in those 2 additional minutes.

In both cases the artists keep it kinda interesting. In both cases it sucks to hear cover bands butcher it.

Arguably, I'd say the last half of "Hey Jude" is worse than "What's Up". The first half is great though.

I'll take What's Up over Hey Jude any given day. I kind of hate gospel and 'Hey Jude' sounds too much like the worst kind of gospel.

I voted for "Suspicious Minds" but I love 'Hey Jude" lots & lots, especially the coda. But "Suspicious Minds" is a juggernaut. & the version on disk 5 of the 60s box, the "stripped down" one, has a much different feel & is worth your time too. Elvis is the only voice & is just single-tracked, & the horns are gone; but that beat, those fills, the fear; I won't say it's better than the master take but the nakedness is breathtaking & I play it a lot more than the master fwiw.

i had never heard 'suspicious minds' until i worked an overnight shift stocking groceries after my freshman year of college. the station we listened to played pretty much the same thing every night, but in a different order, so it quickly became a highlight of the evening. i recall speeding down the aisles using a pallet jack as a scooter, singing the backup vocals

without going back to sort through all the hey jude-related threads, what exactly is the problem with the coda? (i voted susp minds as I think it's a better song) is it just its overexposure and/or perceived self-indulgence? i always thought the build-release and sentiment of this song was beautiful, and i'm a cranky curmudgeon about most things!

I think both are true. "Hey Jude" would have a hard time beating anything (that's not Night Ranger) in a poll--for whatever reasons, it's become one of the default songs on which to heap scorn on the Beatles. Which is not to say that "Suspicious Minds" wouldn't beat most songs you might put it up against.

“Imagine” is the only song everybody loves

Every Beatles song has millions of people who don’t like it, but “Hey Jude” is one of the more inexplicable cases (to me). It’s my favorite Beatles song, as “Suspicious Minds” is my favorite Elvis song.

If we're honest though, this poll was a tie. Elvis double-tracked his lead vocal, McCartney didn't. Therefore 56 votes divided by 2 vocal tracks = 28.

I know plenty of sad souls who do not like the Beatles in general. I have never known anyone who harbored a particular hate for "Hey Jude." Maybe I've just been lucky.

Also, the margin of victory for "Suspicious Minds" is inexplicable to me.

It doesn't have Elvis hyperventilating and going "Judy Judy " at the end.
