I'm gonna go with TLC, just because "Red Light Special" makes me stain my pants every single time.

ehhhh. there's no contest. tlc. it doesn't require an explanation. tlc.

TLC are among my all-time favourite bands. Their last two albums are among my favourites, and I'm delighted to have just heard that they are working on their next, including four tracks where Lisa Lopes had recorded her part.

TLC for me as well -- maybe there's a better comparison out there. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 26 August 2002 18:39 (twenty-three years ago)

The Boyz rule! They're probably the only group in the last 10 years to make singing really high sound musical. And they invented the concept of the modern slowjam-before-dance boyband - without them there'd be no Backstreet Boys. And no Boyzone, or Westlife; maybe even no Robbie Williams... shit. I guess TLC do win.

hello no-brainer

tlc even WITH waterfalls

Why am I the only one who prefers Boys II Men? Motown Philly is the JAM. Boys II Men, ABC, BBD...

Mary (Mary), Monday, 26 August 2002 22:09 (twenty-three years ago)

(ok oh fine) ...the east coast family

The problem is that Boyz II Men only have two songs that are great ("Motownphilly", "Water Runs Dry") and one song that was okay before over-exposure ("End Of The Road"). Everything else they've done is deeply embarrassing.

By comparison, TLC had one embarrassing song ("Ain't Too Proud To Beg") and even that song was fantastic. Add in the other genius singles ("Creep", "Baby Baby Baby", "Diggin' On You", "Waterfalls", "Silly Ho", "No Scrubs", "Unpretty", "Red Light Special") and they're CLEARLY better, even if T-Boz can't sing live.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 26 August 2002 22:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Motownphilly beats the complete TLC catalog.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 26 August 2002 23:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Or, one good song is better than no good songs...

Mary (Mary), Monday, 26 August 2002 23:16 (twenty-three years ago)

TLC

I don't believe in overexposure, so I'd put "I'll Make Love to You" ahead of "No Scrubs" (since I'm a scrub) but not "Creep" (since I'm paranoid). Naturally, "I Swear" beats all of these.

B:Rad (Brad), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 01:09 (twenty-three years ago)

The Boyz. For the duly-noted "Water Runs Dry," which iz a stone CLASSIC, and for the ace costumes of the period, and also Mary's right about "Motownphilly." ...but TLC is almost as good as everybody says ("Red Light Special" makes me cringe tho)...I propose that somebody collate all of each group's acceptance speeches from Grammy, AMA, and MTV Video Music Awards broadcasts and render a decision as to who is better based on which band yammered on less about Jesus Christ.

unpretty was preposterous!

"Boyz II Men only have two songs that are great ("Motownphilly", "Water Runs Dry") " - this is very, very true. TLC wins this hands down, but I do find it odd that the Boyz II Men hit-well ran dry so suddenly; I know the boybands they, um, influenced so heavily may have stolen some of their thunder, but this hardly explains a drop from obnoxiously record-setting multi-month chart-toppers to barely squeaking into the top 40. What happened?

James Blount, Tuesday, 27 August 2002 03:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Tis the way of the world. Ten years from now, peoples will be wondering what happened to TLC...

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 03:48 (twenty-three years ago)

what's the tlc video where left-eye is wearing glasses in the shape of fried eggs?

"A Song For Mama".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 10:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan you're a great man for remembering that 'un :)

J0hn Darn1elle, Tuesday, 27 August 2002 12:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I do my best. :)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 12:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Bad, evil memories, Mr. Perry. Please cast that horrid vision away.

Bless your heart, Mary, but yours is a universe I will steer clear from. ;-) "Motownphilly" is A jam, but Dan's list of TLC singles is the jam, the marmalade, the Shedd's Spread, the Promise...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 14:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Motownphilly back again
Doin' a little eastcoast swang
Boyz II Men, on the way now
Not too hard, not too soft
