Critical Flipflops Just For The Hell Of It

Was just reading an Oasis live review at my fave Toronto free weekly and was surprised to see positive comments from sneaky old vet Stuart Berman. It didn't seem that he was interested in their music as much as conscious of the fact that giving an Oasis show a bad review would be very boring to read. Is it possible that there are certain bands about whom the only thing left to say is the opposite of the truth? Or, is it inevitable that prevailing critical winds must change direction after a certain amount of time?

more new 'Sonic Youth suXOr, or not, or maybe they do, ahem, no, not really' answers

if the show was crap then its the reviewer's duty to tell like it is, but maybe Oasis were good that night. Stranger things have happened.

I hear one of the brothers spent the whole night chasing a poor office worker around the Horseshoe trying to convince her he was sexy.

i was about to say 'aren't they both married?' when i realized the absurdity of pointing it out.

Im still holding on to my memory of the annoying one, well the more annoying one getting hit with a Fred Flinstone Sandles on the head well opening up for Neil Young in 98 or so.

I hereby nominate Julio DeSouza for the Nobel Prize.

Thats about as absurd as one of them trying to convince someone they are modest...or handsome...or talented...

Based on some of the folks I know, they don't have to convince certain people.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 26 August 2002 18:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Its not so absurd as much as its me trying to phrase things politely.

America's worst rock writer, Robert Hilburn, was probably patting himself on the back for the Cher "re-appraisal" that appeared in the LA Times Calendar section a couple of weeks ago. He seemed to imply that no one else remembered how great she was in the Sixties. But, in typical Hilburn fashion, he had absolutely nothing new to add to the subject and it ended up being a hatchet job. And, of course, he mentioned her U2 Cover. Actually, the only Cher songs he seemed to rate were "I Got You, Babe" and her cover of "All I Really Want To Do". And, of course, to him, *everything* she's done since then has been garbage. He's such an idiot.

The NME gave the last Weller album the thumbs-up. I felt that their thinking was that giving Weller bad reviews has become SO old hat at this stage, that they must show that they are a mag who is not afraid to look unfashionable. They just ended up looking like wankers, as usual.

this is a grebt question and nobody's answered it yet

It is possible that there are bands with so much history that there are multiple truths, all equally valid, that directly contradict each other. Like the Rolling Stones (haha).

What’s the truth with music appreciation - some people still like Oasis, so what. Just 'cos you don't doesn't make it the truth unless you won’t to get into wobbly Marxist false consciousness territory.

"Thank you very much but I dont want your friggen Fred Flinstone Flipflops ya fackah!" he managed to slurr out. Then for the rest of the set he got pummled with water bottles. After awhile they just stopped trying to dodge them, sadly it didnt get them of stage any quicker.

Then there's Perry Farrell's encounter with a Birkenstock, as recorded on a live B-side from 1990. Most entertaining.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 14:11 (twenty-three years ago)

"I never thought it would come to this, But the guy threw a Birkenstock. I mean he's a real asshole. He doesnt even understand fashion."

P. Farrell
