the Patrick Stump thread

lot of Fall Out Boy fans on here so it might be worth having a thread dedicated to Stump's solo career, since at this point Soul Punk might be my most anticipated album of 2011 and the EP of outtakes he just released this week, Truant Wave, is pretty dope in and of itself.

also j0rdan posted this a few weeks ago and while i'm not big into gimmicky youtube covers and he makes some pretty funny faces in this, it's pretty incredible:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4WtSIPRZBk

kind of makes a good case for how he could totally tap into the pop radio zeitgeist, which is interesting because i feel like this project will either have a huge crossover hit or will sink like a stone.

some dude, Thursday, 24 February 2011 04:00 (fifteen years ago)

I'm going to have to check out that EP, seems to be getting wildly divergent "reviews" from the Fall Out Boy hardcore. I'm really looking forward to this, I've always found him the most engaging thing about FoB.

rendezvous then i'm through with HOOS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 24 February 2011 04:03 (fifteen years ago)

The Jackson medley is possibly even more polished/less awkward. Dug the last few Fall Out Boy albums. (Even if I kind of wish the guitar of Cork Tree came back at some point) The R&B/punk/stadium rock fusion look on Folie a Deux was amazing, but seemed to be a step too far for radio, though. Compared w/ the success of Infinity on High, didn't it kind of brick, singles-wise?

So I'm not sure what that says about Stump's solo chances. Here's hoping.

Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill The Radio Star (Alex in Montreal), Thursday, 24 February 2011 04:09 (fifteen years ago)

yeah the last album had no hits, and even Infinity On High kind of coasted on career momentum and fan goodwill more than anything else, since they were pretty quickly losing rock radio support by that point. i don't see PS's solo stuff have any rock radio appeal at all, so like i said either he'll have a single that works on Top 40 stations or it'll have no mainstream profile at all.

some dude, Thursday, 24 February 2011 04:12 (fifteen years ago)

tbh i haven't really dug the few solo songs that he's put out recently but i'll give this EP a whirl & keep an open mind cuz i think dude is pretty much a genius

pop the s1ock (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 24 February 2011 04:14 (fifteen years ago)

People probably don't care that much anymore, but I kinda want this to be successful because I don't want the Pete Wentz apologists to be all, "see! Pete was the brainz behind Fall Out Boy".

rendezvous then i'm through with HOOS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 24 February 2011 04:15 (fifteen years ago)

i am looking forward to this record and this thread

Throwing on Truant Wave now.

But before I do, can I just say that 'truancy' is an underused word. So props to Stump even if this is a mess.

Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill The Radio Star (Alex in Montreal), Thursday, 24 February 2011 04:19 (fifteen years ago)

"Let me say this / You look better famous" is a line right up there with some of Wentz's meta-shtick. Liking this.

Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill The Radio Star (Alex in Montreal), Thursday, 24 February 2011 04:21 (fifteen years ago)

I don't like Fall Out Boy but that video is really dope - curious about what direction he goes in with this project

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 24 February 2011 04:22 (fifteen years ago)

also he looks kinda improbably smashable in that video

pop the s1ock (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 24 February 2011 05:05 (fifteen years ago)

He's gotten a lot better looking post-FOB. Not good-looking per se, but decent. Wentz has gone the opposite. Emo Jewfro is NAGL.

Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill The Radio Star (Alex in Montreal), Thursday, 24 February 2011 05:44 (fifteen years ago)

wentz was never ever ever agl

pop the s1ock (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 24 February 2011 05:44 (fifteen years ago)

True. But he's a worse look now than he was before.

Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill The Radio Star (Alex in Montreal), Thursday, 24 February 2011 06:26 (fifteen years ago)

might as well throw the single in here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCegYgpgYXI

the ep is incredibly sequenced, which is weird because why put that much thought into an ep. love "big hype," love patrick's voice, love the weirder turns on the ep that remind me of prince.

Brad Nelson (BradNelson), Thursday, 24 February 2011 17:13 (fifteen years ago)

that youtube cover video is fucking awful

teledyldonix, Thursday, 24 February 2011 17:18 (fifteen years ago)

it must suck to be wrong so publicly like this man

the ep is incredibly sequenced, which is weird because why put that much thought into an ep.

finding the right sequence is probably easier with earlier songs, plus he seems like the kind of nerdy guy who'd obsess over running order for everything. and i get the sense that the album's been done for a while now and the label's gunshy about giving it a release date, so he's probably just doing this as a way of at least getting some music out there.

Dr. Frogbius (some dude), Thursday, 24 February 2011 20:13 (fifteen years ago)

earlier = fewer

Dr. Frogbius (some dude), Thursday, 24 February 2011 20:13 (fifteen years ago)

what label is he even putting the solo stuff out on

pop the s1ock (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 24 February 2011 20:14 (fifteen years ago)

Except for This Ain't A Scene and One & Only feat. Timbaland, I didn't really care for Fall Out Boy that much.

Island...i assume when FOB split they got first dibs on any offshoot projects.

Dr. Frogbius (some dude), Friday, 25 February 2011 00:33 (fifteen years ago)

its funny i'm listening to 'take this to your grave' (now and forev my fave FOB record) and its uncanny how even then he was going for like a chart-y r&b vocal style

HOOStory is back. Fasten your steenbelts. (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Friday, 25 February 2011 04:42 (fifteen years ago)

i still haven't listened to the pre-Cork Tree stuff at all, i guess i should at some point

Dr. Frogbius (some dude), Friday, 25 February 2011 13:39 (fifteen years ago)

you can keep skipping evening out with your girlfriend but take this to your grave is kind of their other best record (besides folie)

ayo so maybe i should post the tracks he's released from this record both of which are ridiculous

first time i heard "this city" i thought "r. kelly" which means i think it is so tremendous

preschoolin' life (BradNelson), Saturday, 2 July 2011 07:44 (fourteen years ago)

anyway, according to alternative press, soul punk is coming out july 26. this is the tracklist:

1. Explode
2. This City
3. Dance Miserable
4. Spotlight (New Regrets)
5. The I in Lie
6. Run Dry (x heart x fingers)
7. Greed
8. Everybody Wants Somebody
9. Allie
10. It's Gonna Get Better

preschoolin' life (BradNelson), Saturday, 2 July 2011 17:30 (fourteen years ago)

two months pass...

that date should totally be amended to october 18

and you can hear the song "allie" by clicking the upper left corner on this page: http://gomerch.com/patrickstump/soulpunk/

it starts off like power metal and then becomes "doo-wop (that thing)"

mutant slow drum (BradNelson), Thursday, 29 September 2011 23:41 (fourteen years ago)

"Allie" is probably my favorite solo track i've heard from him to date, and "Explode" is the first one that really fits the 'soul punk' tag to a T, so my anticipation is definitely at a high.

still don't like "This City," which i feel like is only worth existing if it's a hit and benefits the whole project; so far it hasn't cracked the Hot 100 (while the 2 worst Decaydance bands are in the top 10, no less).

some dude, Thursday, 29 September 2011 23:58 (fourteen years ago)

also the pre-order page for soul punk on itunes has 90-second samples of each song

mutant slow drum (BradNelson), Friday, 30 September 2011 03:23 (fourteen years ago)

this is out there and it's really incredible

"dance miserable" is a total roller skating jam

mutant slow drum (BradNelson), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 00:23 (fourteen years ago)

cool drum sounds on this record ship

mutant slow drum (BradNelson), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 00:25 (fourteen years ago)

Run Dry is amazing. At least the first half of it. Bad Side of 25 is another early favorite.

Better than Truant Wave - or at least more cohesive and more pop. A lot of it wears its Prince and MJ influences on its sleeve but it's definitely a great album.

Not sure if any of it will hit the charts, but I hope so, if only so I get to hear Stump stretch his wings more.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 00:28 (fourteen years ago)

the second half of "run dry" is called "cryptozoology" and it is my favorite future dimensional funk exercise of recent memory

mutant slow drum (BradNelson), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 00:29 (fourteen years ago)

lol brad

a friend sent me the leak already but i need to get to my other computer to download it -- v excited to hear the whole thing!

i heard "This City" on the local pop station for the first time the other night, so he may yet have some commercial potential

some dude, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 00:29 (fourteen years ago)

"run dry" has that precise curvy synth/drum groove of early prince records, i am always surprised by it.

mutant slow drum (BradNelson), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 00:35 (fourteen years ago)

"always" meaning "the past day or so" in that case

mutant slow drum (BradNelson), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 00:38 (fourteen years ago)

Where do you get "Cryptozology"?

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 14:50 (fourteen years ago)

johnny crunch, Friday, 14 October 2011 14:50 (fourteen years ago)

dope album, although i think i like some of the bonus tracks on the deluxe version more than the album proper

some dude, Friday, 14 October 2011 22:14 (fourteen years ago)

I love a good few of the songs on here ("Explode", "Spotlight", "Run Dry/Cryptozoology", "Everybody Wants Somebody", Allie", all the bonus tracks) but I just can't forget that the reason the dude learned to play all the instruments (and spent all his Fall Out Boy $$$) is because otherwise it'd be too obvious the songs were composed in Garageband.

I just need to get over my prejudice. Damon Albarn made his last record on his iPad, and it was awesome.

hurricane weather (forapper), Saturday, 15 October 2011 02:08 (fourteen years ago)

did he actually learn any instruments for this record though? he supposedly played drums in a bunch of bands pre-Fall Out Boy and it seems like everything else is guitars and synths to the same extent as on his outside productions over the past few years (in fact if he wanted to mask the software origins of the record he should've put way more guitar on here).

some dude, Saturday, 15 October 2011 02:24 (fourteen years ago)

Trumpet, I think (even though I don't hear it anywhere).

hurricane weather (forapper), Wednesday, 19 October 2011 20:37 (fourteen years ago)

etc, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 15:14 (fourteen years ago)

he should really just take a breather and reinvent himself as a producer/songwriter. leaving Fueled By Ramen may surprisingly be the worst move he made since 3 of their acts have had huge pop hits in the past few months, 2 of which he used to work with a lot. he needs to get back on that gravy train and eventually remind people how much better he is than Cobra Starship douche.

DNRIYHM NATION 1814 (some dude), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 16:49 (fourteen years ago)

i def feel like stuff on 'soul punk' could in an alternate universe be re-worked a bit and if sung by someone else be a hit

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 29 February 2012 16:50 (fourteen years ago)

yeah totally -- i wrote a thing a while back speculating on which songs could've made ideal single choices, ultimately couldn't convince myself that any of them are tailor-made for any radio format right now but "Everybody Wants Somebody" and "The 'I' In Lie" wouldn't take too much retooling to have hit potential.

Stump co-wrote a song on Bruno Mars's first EP, he should really get in on his next album, a lot of his stuff would be huge if Mars sung it

just heard this for the first time today, at least as good as any FOB album and certainly preferable to their recent singles. every once in a while the production is a bit tinny but it's actually charming. "Spotlight" is the only track I don't care for
