you're right, "Walkin' On The Sun" is the one that's just like "Steal My Sunshine," the comparison doesn't work as well with "All Star"

wow pop music was fantastic at this point in time

The extended version of The Boy Is Mine is a thing of beauty, the first two minutes could easily have come from Bjork's "Homogenic", and then you've got the fierce hookiness of the vocals!

Even the slushy ballads (Shania, Sarah, "All My Life") aren't unenjoyable, this is a bit tricky.

Len song was plenty overplayed, just not from licensing. and I'd say your argument about "Paper Planes" is much more applicable to "Steal My Sunshine," I don't know what's even good about it besides the "More, More, More" loop.

the arm crossing is just kinda giving people shit for the fun of it, "Steal My Sunshine" has always been kind of singularly revered on ILM out of an alt-rock period/sound that's generally reviled here so i'm just kinda like whatever, if you think it's actually that much better than Sugar Ray idgi.

yeah the loop is a huge part of why the song is good but in this case it isnt celebrated as being some great accomplishment of modern music, just a fun pop single

i love the len song but this is a good point

idk the dudes from len have a wacky black friend w/ dreads...

fly is probably better than sunshine but i dont have that much affection for either, really, all the songs in my top 5 are better

im not sure what light al is shining on our prejudices by observing that we like one song & dislike another that are in vaguely similar genre (although smash mouth arent using samples & the singer has a diff voice)

I hated both Smashmouth and 3EB until I saw them live (they played a venue where I was a volunteer usher) and I was kind of amazed by a) how good Smashmouth was live and b) how much better 3EB's terrible singer worked in a live setting

yeah im not sure anyone here really dislikes smash mouth bcuz of the genre theyre in as much as they dislike individual songs anyway

i said i thought it was funny that anyone considered it one of the 2 definitive summer beach jams of the late '90s, which isn't the same thing at all.

this really incredible downtempo jam off morcheeba's big calm (n/sq) that i thought was a lot bigger than it actually was

despite i think their being a bunch of stupid long ilm threads about it im just skimming p4k's list of 90s jams from last summer & marvelling @ how perverse & uncertain it is - what a strange attempt at defining an aesethetic it is - but i was really surprised that the bran van track didnt make their list, kinda perfectly prefigures both the priviledge & emptiness of certain strands of indie they seem into, idk its a boring song but it captures/d something
