you're right, "Walkin' On The Sun" is the one that's just like "Steal My Sunshine," the comparison doesn't work as well with "All Star"

some dude, Sunday, 27 February 2011 22:07 (fifteen years ago)

too close, no contest.

EDB, Monday, 28 February 2011 03:44 (fifteen years ago)

lol at first i thought you were posting 2 contradicting statements before i remember that "too close" was a song title

some dude, Monday, 28 February 2011 03:57 (fifteen years ago)

All My Life makes my frigging heart melt!
OTOH the boners song is on here!

Just the "baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby" at the first four seconds, it stops my breath!

wizards of wonder are the keepers of knowledge (Abbbottt), Monday, 28 February 2011 04:10 (fifteen years ago)

Still prefer Len over any of these.

Moka, Monday, 28 February 2011 09:25 (fifteen years ago)

And half of these are way cornier than 'drinking in la' and 'steal my sunshine'.

Moka, Monday, 28 February 2011 09:27 (fifteen years ago)

Actually I'm afraid of listening to any of these songs and realize how trite and dated they probably sound.

Moka, Monday, 28 February 2011 09:30 (fifteen years ago)

this list is so much better than the other, ugh @ len.

"The Boy Is Mine" - Brandy & Monica
"You're Still The One" - Shania Twain
"Too Close" - Next
"My Way" - Usher
"My All" - Mariah Carey
"Everybody [Backstreet's Back]" - Backstreet Boys
"Make It Hot" - Nicole feat. Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott & Mocha
"All My Life" - K-Ci & JoJo
"Genie In A Bottle" - Christina Aguilera
"If You Had My Love" - Jennifer Lopez
"Bills, Bills, Bills" - Destiny's Child
"Where My Girls At?" - 702
"I Want It That Way" - Backstreet Boys
"It's Not Right But It's Okay" - Whitney Houston

^^will rep for all of these and will actually have to spend time listening to them - doubtless time i'll enjoy - to figure out which is best, some real classics in there - "my all", "the boy is mine", "too close", "bills bills bills", "i want it that way", "make it hot"...

lex pretend, Monday, 28 February 2011 09:40 (fifteen years ago)

1. my all ("vividly emblazoned in my mind"!!!! never change mariah) (original's classic enough and then you had the DEA garage mix and the amazing spring jam glide of the so so def remix, best song everrrr)
2. bills bills bills
3. the boy is mine
4. too close
5. make it hot
6. genie in a bottle
7. i want it that way
8. if you had my love
9. it's not right but it's okay ("if six of y'all went out - ah! - then four of you were really cheap - yeah - cuz only two of you had dinner - i found your credit card receipt") (SO FIERCE in the video too)
10. where my girls at?
11. all my life
12. you're still the one
13. my way
14. everybody (backstreet's back)

god every one of those songs was so amazing to go back to.

lex pretend, Monday, 28 February 2011 16:18 (fifteen years ago)

I'm confused by the title. I was expecting the Blue Meanies to be on here.

MarkoP, Monday, 28 February 2011 20:28 (fifteen years ago)

Errr. New Meanies.

i know right!

some dude, Monday, 28 February 2011 20:49 (fifteen years ago)

The extended version of The Boy Is Mine is a thing of beauty, the first two minutes could easily have come from Bjork's "Homogenic", and then you've got the fierce hookiness of the vocals!

Even the slushy ballads (Shania, Sarah, "All My Life") aren't unenjoyable, this is a bit tricky.

o0o00h really? (boxedjoy), Monday, 28 February 2011 22:26 (fifteen years ago)

ummmmm where can i find this extended version you speak of!

lex pretend, Monday, 28 February 2011 23:12 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, this is an amazing list. i have extremely fond memories of the majority of these.

1) i want it that way
2) too close
3) genie in a bottle
4) last kiss
5) the boy is mine
6) it's not right but it's okay
7) where my girls at
8) you're still the one
9) all my life
10) bills bills bills

u were prob trolling but len >>>>>>>>>>>>>> smash mouth

same thing my azz

i was trolling len fans but i meant it, the musical aesthetic and singing style is far more similar than different

JaySeanLilWayne (some dude), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 15:26 (fifteen years ago)

missed this thread, didnt vote, kinda dumm concept but my top 5:

everybody
the boy is mine
wild wild west

where my girls at?

how would it be less dumm, for future threadmaking reference

just think its lol to be so ostentatiously arms-crossed about ppl liking some song you dont, & the no homers club motivation behind this poll is p w/e good list of jams tho

otoh one song rules and the others dont, and it also wasnt overplayed via movie trailers & shrek

deej, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 16:07 (fifteen years ago)

Len song was plenty overplayed, just not from licensing. and I'd say your argument about "Paper Planes" is much more applicable to "Steal My Sunshine," I don't know what's even good about it besides the "More, More, More" loop.

the arm crossing is just kinda giving people shit for the fun of it, "Steal My Sunshine" has always been kind of singularly revered on ILM out of an alt-rock period/sound that's generally reviled here so i'm just kinda like whatever, if you think it's actually that much better than Sugar Ray idgi.

JaySeanLilWayne (some dude), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 16:27 (fifteen years ago)

yeah the loop is a huge part of why the song is good but in this case it isnt celebrated as being some great accomplishment of modern music, just a fun pop single

and i mean lyrics about having fun in the sun >>> 'all i wanna do is take your money' faux class solidarity nonsense, plus dude's voice is less grating

deej, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 16:32 (fifteen years ago)

& fyi i never said there was anything wrong w/ a song entirely riding a single element like that! MIA was made out to be more as if that single was evidence of her mass-appeal or something when imo shes on par w/ like a len or whatever that way

deej, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 16:34 (fifteen years ago)

yeah if the dude's voice isn't grating to you i guess all we can do is agree to disagree

JaySeanLilWayne (some dude), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 16:36 (fifteen years ago)

the arm crossing is just kinda giving people shit for the fun of it, "Steal My Sunshine" has always been kind of singularly revered on ILM out of an alt-rock period/sound that's generally reviled here so i'm just kinda like whatever, if you think it's actually that much better than Sugar Ray idgi.

i love the len song but this is a good point

kl0p's son (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 16:44 (fifteen years ago)

idk the dudes from len have a wacky black friend w/ dreads...

fly is probably better than sunshine but i dont have that much affection for either, really, all the songs in my top 5 are better

Al (shipcom) (Lamp), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 16:45 (fifteen years ago)

im not sure what light al is shining on our prejudices by observing that we like one song & dislike another that are in vaguely similar genre (although smash mouth arent using samples & the singer has a diff voice)

deej, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 16:47 (fifteen years ago)

moving the goal posts by switching to sugar ray tbh ... they had some jams

deej, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 16:47 (fifteen years ago)

"Walking on the Sun" > "All Star"

goth barbershop quartet (DJP), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 16:48 (fifteen years ago)

I hated both Smashmouth and 3EB until I saw them live (they played a venue where I was a volunteer usher) and I was kind of amazed by a) how good Smashmouth was live and b) how much better 3EB's terrible singer worked in a live setting

goth barbershop quartet (DJP), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 16:50 (fifteen years ago)

yeah im not sure anyone here really dislikes smash mouth bcuz of the genre theyre in as much as they dislike individual songs anyway

deej, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 16:50 (fifteen years ago)

i'll contraristan for 3eb around here til the day i'm banned

kl0p's son (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 16:51 (fifteen years ago)

this whole argument is basically a litmus test centered around the question "Do you think Smashmouth, Len, 311 and Sublime are all the same genre?"

goth barbershop quartet (DJP), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 16:52 (fifteen years ago)

haha pretty much

JaySeanLilWayne (some dude), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 16:53 (fifteen years ago)

i mean i wasn't trying to "move the goal posts" by pointing out that there were more than just 2 or 3 bands on the radio in the late '90s working that basic sound

JaySeanLilWayne (some dude), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 16:53 (fifteen years ago)

i'm actually giving Len extra credit by comparing them to fairly big bands that had multiple hits and not, like, Citizen King

JaySeanLilWayne (some dude), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 16:54 (fifteen years ago)

'extra credit'

listening to it again its p amazing how much of the plot of the movie is included in the lyrics to wild wild west

Al (shipcom) (Lamp), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 17:07 (fifteen years ago)

thanks for the scarequotes, lampsterrunoff

JaySeanLilWayne (some dude), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 17:12 (fifteen years ago)

hahahaha who knew that late 90s pop was such a touchy subject 4 u *nods sagely, steeples fingers*

Al (shipcom) (Lamp), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 17:18 (fifteen years ago)

not really! some of it is dope! the abridged Sugar Ray singles poll

JaySeanLilWayne (some dude), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 17:19 (fifteen years ago)

i mean if you think there's nothing inherently silly or worth poking fun at in someone setting up "Steal My Sunshine" and "Drinkin' In LA" as the 2 big summer jams of the late '90s i dunno what to tell you

JaySeanLilWayne (some dude), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 17:20 (fifteen years ago)

no i guess i just missed where that happened, except probably on canadian radio, because they have laws about these things here

that smashmouth song is just a horror tho, its like what burger king promotional movie ties would sound like if they could make music

Al (shipcom) (Lamp), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 17:26 (fifteen years ago)

yeah this thread probably makes less sense if you didn't see the thread it was a direct response to: summer beach jamz 98/99: Drinking in LA vs. (Don't You) Steal My Sunshine

JaySeanLilWayne (some dude), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 17:33 (fifteen years ago)

plus dude's voice is less grating

yeah NO, m.i.a. gives it her best but she falls well short of the gratingness bar established by the len singer and others in his style

lex pretend, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 17:34 (fifteen years ago)

i dont see how 'steal my sunshine' isnt obv a summer beach jam, al

it works much better as one than something oblique like all star

i said i thought it was funny that anyone considered it one of the 2 definitive summer beach jams of the late '90s, which isn't the same thing at all.

JaySeanLilWayne (some dude), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 17:58 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i guess i just dont see why thats so funny since its one of the most explicitly beach-y & was p popular

deej, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 18:02 (fifteen years ago)

the funny part was the other of the 2 being Bran Van 3000 though

JaySeanLilWayne (some dude), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 18:12 (fifteen years ago)

Al (shipcom) (Lamp), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 18:17 (fifteen years ago)

haha, what is blindfold?

i should probably listen to the bran van song before i strenuously disagree with DJP since i haven't heard it in i dunno 12 years

JaySeanLilWayne (some dude), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 18:23 (fifteen years ago)

jesus christ

what the hell am i doing listening to "drinkin in la"

JaySeanLilWayne (some dude), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 18:26 (fifteen years ago)

that poll made me pull out the first BV3 album for the first time in about 7 years and I was shocked at how much I still liked it

ancient, but very sexy (DJP), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 18:26 (fifteen years ago)

haha, what is blindfold?

this really incredible downtempo jam off morcheeba's big calm (n/sq) that i thought was a lot bigger than it actually was

despite i think their being a bunch of stupid long ilm threads about it im just skimming p4k's list of 90s jams from last summer & marvelling @ how perverse & uncertain it is - what a strange attempt at defining an aesethetic it is - but i was really surprised that the bran van track didnt make their list, kinda perfectly prefigures both the priviledge & emptiness of certain strands of indie they seem into, idk its a boring song but it captures/d something

in the darkened apartment we wept to R.E.M.'s 'nightswimming' and watched (Lamp), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 18:43 (fifteen years ago)

lol

JaySeanLilWayne (some dude), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 19:03 (fifteen years ago)

len had the pregnant girl in the music video, that is the other half of the song's appeal obviously

and yes i would consider "i want it that way" basically the summer jam of that year considering it was an enormous part of summer 1999, even if it is not exactly 'summery'

teledyldonix, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 19:10 (fifteen years ago)

i should give up arguing about Len for Lent

JaySeanLilWayne (some dude), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 19:49 (fifteen years ago)

i love 'drinking in la' but its a total nostalgic novelty & not really a summer jam imo

The funniest part of this is that "Go" prominently features "Steal My Sunshine" at the end of the movie.
