Billy Corgan vs. Dave Mustaine

Which narcissistic and egomaniacal bandleader is more than you can handle? Who now, or in the past, has made you more annoyed/mad/whatever?

Billy Corgan says a lot of ridiculous shit and likes to push people's buttons because he gets away with it, while Dave Mustaine is a loud attention-starved (but ultimately harmless) fella with some abandonment issues.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 16:34 (fourteen years ago)

both have pretty unpleasant singing voices that feel like they're almost pushing their voices to sound as ugly as possible too

some dude, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 16:38 (fourteen years ago)

has Corgan ever had a public moment of sincere vulnerability like Mustaine in Some Kind Of Monster? i feel like BC is always 'on' for better or worse

some dude, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 16:38 (fourteen years ago)

None that I know of. Mustaine became a sympathetic figure in SKoM and iirc the Megadeth episode of Behind the Music.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 16:48 (fourteen years ago)

Like, I wanna say there are a couple times when Corgan has said something in an interview either in print or on camera that made me sympathize with him a little, but then he will IMMEDIATELY turn back to being a dickhead.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 16:50 (fourteen years ago)

it's kind of a feat to be so unsympathetic when your music is always crying out I USED TO BE A LITTLE BOY etc.

some dude, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 16:56 (fourteen years ago)

apropos of nothing, "Sweating Bullets" is one of the funniest music videos of all time imo:

lol I'd forgotten just how incredibly stupid that is.

Can we put a price tag on polls?

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 17:01 (fourteen years ago)

Wikipedia:

In 1983, Mustaine concluded that one of his goals in life should be to create a band more successful than Metallica. He has failed.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 17:02 (fourteen years ago)

Cold.

I've been tempted to make some sort of "Best 1990s Video Where Politicians Get Assassinated" after seeing this one the other night:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfpgpf6QVnI

Seeing those CHIPs used to provoke almost the same reaction as seeing Nazis on television.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 17:05 (fourteen years ago)

This is going to turn into one of those threads where everyone dogpiles on Dave Mustaine for a week before Billy Corgain wins by a 3:1 margin.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 17:06 (fourteen years ago)

tbh that's a foregone conclusion, Corgan is simply more famous and has gotten a lot more (negative) media coverage. but there's also few threads about Megadeth so this will end up being a sponge for Mustaine lols.

some dude, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 17:10 (fourteen years ago)

"In 1983, Mustaine concluded that one of his goals in life should be to create a band more successful than Metallica. He has failed."

Mustaine actually has a whole Wiki entry devoted to "feuds and rivalries": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Mustaine_feuds_and_rivalries

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 17:28 (fourteen years ago)

Aw, that list was a let-down:

• "While taking the stage Mustaine could be seen hugging Lars and James, suggesting that the feud has finally been resolved."
• "Mustaine could also be seen hugging Kirk in the aforementioned June 22 Sonisphere show in Bulgaria when he took the stage, which suggests this feud is also over."
• "On the official Megadeth website Mustaine is quoted saying 'This shows the power of brotherly love and forgiveness. David Ellefson belongs in Megadeth.'"
• "In late 2006, Chris Poland began posting on the official Megadeth message board, apparently having resolved his problems with Mustaine."
• "Recently on the VH1 40 Least Metal Moments, interviews were shown with Rikki Rachtman wearing a shirt saying 'Dave Mustaine for President'."

etc

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 17:34 (fourteen years ago)

He's probably mended a lot of fences via the sobriety process.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 17:36 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i'm guess the word "hugging" is nowhere in Corgan's wikipedia entry

some dude, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 17:36 (fourteen years ago)

Megadeth releasing 4 different albums with ellipses in the title is far more irksome to me than anything either of these guys has said or done

Mustaine seems like the cooler dude but tbh I listen to the Pumpkins more

ice cr?m's world of female people (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 1 March 2011 18:01 (fourteen years ago)

Oh yeah, subquestion...have either of these guys actually driven you away from their music?

I barely ever listen to Smashing Pumpkins anymore, and when I do it's hard to even enjoy.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 18:04 (fourteen years ago)

Corgan is pretty goddamned annoying but I broke out the Pumpkins stuff after that Pumpkins vs. Pavement poll a couple weeks ago. that was the first time in quite awhile though. honestly can't remember the last time I listened to Megadeath.

ice cr?m's world of female people (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 1 March 2011 18:05 (fourteen years ago)

I'm only vaguely familiar with Megadeth's music and have listened to a ton of Smashing Pumpkins (mostly because it seems that there always people around me were into them), so I voted for Mustaine

TBH, the two or three times I've seen Megadeth live over the last decade or so have been much better than the three or four times I've seen the Pumpkins.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 18:43 (fourteen years ago)

Irony in that above clip where he alludes to losing an arm, seeing as he did, briefly, in essence lose an arm.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 18:45 (fourteen years ago)

instead of voting in this poll, I am going to listen to Megadeth albums for research.

hypothesis: Megadeth shits on Metallica from a great height.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 19:18 (fourteen years ago)

I totally LOL'd, hard...

Do they share the same voice, cuz I can impersonate eithers singing pretty well.. lol

Corgan has the X factor- he was banging Jessica Simpson.. say what you will about how much of a 'tard she is, but she's at very very bangable.. I guess cuz of that, he's more annoying, only in an envious kinda way.. lol!

SeanWayne, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 22:19 (fourteen years ago)

Mustaine has made a couple of decent records, so Mustaine it is

But....

Mustaine got clean cuz he found the Lord... soooo annoying! lol

SeanWayne, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 22:21 (fourteen years ago)

corgan any day. smashing pumpkins made 3 great albums , mustaine just wrote some great songs. Neither of them are any good now. Mustaine does manage to be a bigger prick than Corgan though, quite an achievement.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 22:22 (fourteen years ago)

Mustaine does manage to be a bigger prick than Corgan though, quite an achievement.

I'd say that's reversed.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 22:23 (fourteen years ago)

im sure we can all agree both are big pricks

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 22:24 (fourteen years ago)

Both are pretentious and a bit egotistical in their own ways, both have weakish singing voices but know how to write songs, both have gotten on my nerves many times over the years.

The only difference is that Megadeth wrote about 4-5 really great albums, whereas I don't really listen to Smashing Pumpkins anymore.

So far.... So good... Vote Megadeth.

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 2 March 2011 03:59 (fourteen years ago)

I vote for the lesser of two evils, Billy Corgan, but I dislike him a lot.

Dave Mustaine, though, even in his 'born again' phase, is a hypocritical, big-mouthed, judgmental motherfucker who talks way too much shit and is ignorant about half the things he talks about.

yea, the last Megadeth album was killer, but sometimes I want to ram a bubonic plague-infected dildo down his throat

I love Mustaine. I read his book, that was pretty good. The guy is no dummy, and he certainly is not afraid to be critical of himself about some of his past stupidity. He's gotta get over the Metallica thing though, it's still a burr in his side.

Ive never voluntarily listened to a Smashing Pumpkins song, but I'd like to smash that bald fuckers face in. So Mustaine for me.

In the 'defend Corgan' column, the guy is very generous when it comes to charities, regularly supporting local musicians and the local music scene. And don't forget, back in 1998 the Pumpkins did an entire charity tour, donating 100% of ticket sales and raising some $3 million dollars.

I 100% do not doubt that Corgan is a much, much better dude than Mustaine, probably has a better record collection (I'd kill to see any relics of the tape-trading days Dave has though), and is a better guy to break bread with. He just makes the worst music known to man.

five gone cats from Boston (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 15:22 (fourteen years ago)

I'll bet Corgan's record collection is really uninteresting and dominated by the hoary classics of FM classic rock and 80s alternative rock. I'd be much more interested in seeing Mustaine's.

I remember seeing Megadeth in 08. musically they are still amazing and put on a fantastic live show and they're not so married to strict, barely-changing setlists like Metallica are, and cover more ground.

But Dave's between song banter was beyond excruciating. Very narcissistic, and meandering...at one point he said something about fallen soldiers or our troops or something and someone booed. of course Mustaine called him out.

I mean, dude should have been booed, hate war or not, I don't believe in taking it out on the troops, but...Mustaine turned it into an excuse to go into one of his confused rants/tirades, when all he had to say was just 'fuck off, dude!'.

orville reddenflocka (San Te), Sunday, 6 March 2011 18:37 (fourteen years ago)

I saw a Slaughter show in '91 where Mark Slaughter dedicated "Fly to the Angels" to all the troops. Then he did a cover of "Revolution" switching out "Chairman Mao" with "Saddam Hussein".

yes, has been since around the Youthanasia era. but he sure doesn't act like it. he was once quoted in Guitar World (or Guitar magazine, can't remember which) in the late 90's as saying "I love Jesus, but I'll kick your ass".
