lotta AMG threads obviously but i wasn't sure which one would be best to put this on, so hey a new thread why not:

Going to be weird saying I write for AllRovi.com now but hey.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 2 March 2011 15:06 (fourteen years ago)

did you lobby for AllRaggett.com?

some dude, Wednesday, 2 March 2011 15:08 (fourteen years ago)

Ha. That explains the weird transitional page I got when I went to allmusic.com late last night. It was offering me allmusic.com plus separate links for games and movies.

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 2 March 2011 15:10 (fourteen years ago)

xpost -- Ever so tempting.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 2 March 2011 15:11 (fourteen years ago)

good riddance to that awful website design. but i see that allrovi doesn't let you open certain pages in a new window so fuck it too.

All Raggett, all of the time...

Mark G, Wednesday, 2 March 2011 15:13 (fourteen years ago)

you know, I complain a lot about living in an age when everything gets focus-groped to death, every move micromanaged & overanalyzed, all surfaces buffed to an irritating, lifeless sheen. so in the spirit of fairness, I want to take my hat off to the stone fucking genius who thought changing "AllMusic" to "AllRovi" was a good idea.

Neu! romancer (dayo), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 15:21 (fourteen years ago)

Rovi’s VP of Marketing Dave Jordan told reporters: “We think there is a better entertainment experience out there and we want consumers to use our site to learn about it. Once they experience the richness and features we provide, they might start looking for it in other devices and want to connect where ever they are. Of course, that is on top of the benefit to Rovi which is to showcase our data and services as an inspiration to our customers and future developers”.

hard not to feel inspired by such bold artistic vision

five gone cats from Boston (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 15:24 (fourteen years ago)

Weird to me that instead of artists they have "people" as a search filter.

Wacky Way Lounge (Evan), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 15:26 (fourteen years ago)

I feel less like I'm searching for musicians and more like I'm looking for the latest gossip.

Wacky Way Lounge (Evan), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 15:27 (fourteen years ago)

Well, I definitely prefer the design to the most recent allmusic layout.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 2 March 2011 15:30 (fourteen years ago)

i just read about this rovi company as i'd never heard of them before, and realised they used to be known as Macrovision, the company behind pretty much all the anti-piracy techniques used over the last 20 years - starting with video cassettes..

Wow, did they get a blind monkey to create this interface? FFS! Genre and year are flopped, it's not in chrono order, and for Allmusic's issues, it was a fabulous way to get tips on where to start with a band, easy look at albums ratings (whether one agreed or not), chrono order of albums, which albums tracks appeared on, etc. It's a daily visit for me.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 3 March 2011 02:35 (fourteen years ago)

The site smells like it was put together by suits who 1) don't use the web much and 2) don't care about music. Oh well, what do I want for free anyway...

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 3 March 2011 02:36 (fourteen years ago)

Current method:

- google.com
- search 'site:allmusic.com "<artist name>" discography'
- artist's discography is usually first result

Future method:

- cry

it sucks that you have to click your mouse about 30 times just to see a complete list of influences (ahem, influencers) and followers.

the findr function is hilariously useless. I just imagine someone walking into a record store and asking, "do you have any easy listening shit from the '80s or '90s, let's say 40% chill and 100% negative, that's suitable for soundtracking a road trip? (actual result: Radio Thailand: Transmissions from the Tropical Kingdom)

ilxor astro-ilx? (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 4 March 2011 19:17 (fourteen years ago)

so is it just a matter of days before allmusic goes offline? it's still 100% intact with no mention of Rovi aside from a little link on the bottom right-hand corner of the page.

I did some sleuthing via google cache, and it's interesting that (on pages like this one) they originally just imported data directly from allmusic to allrovi without changing stuff like layout, discography order, the AllMusic tag in the titlebar, and so on. I'm not sure why they bothered to make the new site public before it was even finished. a little unprofessional imho.

I'm getting used to it, on second visit it wasn't as terrible as it looked on the first visit.

I just don't like being exposed to more evidence that the film industry has contaminated the music industry. But so far, the most offensive thing is the terribly non-descript and cheap looking domain name.
