idea here being 10 artists whose album output throughout the whole decade you rate highly (preferably at least 3-4 albums over the course of all of most of the '90s, and related artists and non-album material don't count, but whatever works i guess and i'm breaking those rules myself here and there)

mine:
A Tribe Called Quest
Morphine
Superchunk
Fugazi
The Posies
Jay-Z
Pulp
Pearl Jam
UGK
They Might Be Giants

Can't give you ten, but Yo La Tengo for sure.

clemenza, Thursday, 3 March 2011 15:43 (fourteen years ago)

And probably Madonna--far from perfect, but she must have had at least three strong ones (and enough for an excellent compilation drawn from the decade).

clemenza, Thursday, 3 March 2011 15:44 (fourteen years ago)

you're just gonna POO all over my thread, huh

Rovi Wade (some dude), Thursday, 3 March 2011 15:44 (fourteen years ago)

it felt good to channel morbz, tbh

Rovi Wade (some dude), Thursday, 3 March 2011 16:33 (fourteen years ago)

Not trying to derail the thread. I'm a song guy, not albums. I literally couldn't name anyone other than Yo La Tengo or Madonna where I've even heard four LPs, much less liked four. (Well, also the Pet Shop Boys. But I don't know if they had more than a couple of strong ones.)

clemenza, Thursday, 3 March 2011 16:42 (fourteen years ago)

I was mainly making a poop joke fwiw

Rovi Wade (some dude), Thursday, 3 March 2011 16:44 (fourteen years ago)

get prepared 2 make another:

8ball & MJG
Aphex Twin
Mary J. Blige
Brainiac
Ryoji Ikeda
Magnetic Fields
Plastikman
Saint Etienne
Silver Jews
UGK

kinda a shitty list but i claim youth against knowing about a lot of 90s shit

F♯ A♯, Red♯ Blue♯ (Lamp), Thursday, 3 March 2011 17:04 (fourteen years ago)

yeah that's pretty dope!

Rovi Wade (some dude), Thursday, 3 March 2011 17:11 (fourteen years ago)

Soul Coughing
Underworld (dubnobass, Second Toughest, Beaucoup Fish, plus a ton of great EPs/singles)
The Orb
Orbital (everything up to Middle of Nowhere isn't it?)
Denki Groove (durrrrrf)
Chemical Brothers (Exit Planet Dust, Dig Your Own Hole, Surrender)
Ween
Aphex Twin (everything before Drukqs)
Cake (I also really like Comfort Eagle, but they really did drop off after that)
P-Model (I hate to name these artists that nobody's heard of but it's hard to come up with 10, plus between the band and solo work this really is one of the most impressive stretches of music I've ever heard)

frogbs, Thursday, 3 March 2011 17:23 (fourteen years ago)

nothing at all wrong with naming artists people haven't heard of

Rovi Wade (some dude), Thursday, 3 March 2011 17:26 (fourteen years ago)

Good timing, I just completed a piece on the 90s and updated my lists - http://www.fastnbulbous.com/90s.htm

I made a list of 300 albums for the decade. If I ranked by who had the most albums in that list, it would be Stereolab with 5 albums; the following had 4 - PJ Harvey, Walt Mink, Melvins, Afghan Whigs, Beck, Flaming Lips and Orbital; and Bjork, Fugazi, Ardo Lindsay, Tom Waits, Massive Attack, Pavement, Tortoise, The Jesus Lizard, Dog Faced Hermans, Spiritualized, Seam, Slowdive, Long Fin Killie, Belle & Sebastion, Swervedriver, Pram, Mercury Rev, Cornershop, Sonic Youth and Rancid had 3.

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 3 March 2011 17:30 (fourteen years ago)

you and "Ardo" Lindsay can take it to Bands/artists whose names are frequently misspelled by writers, casual/pretend fans, etc.

Rovi Wade (some dude), Thursday, 3 March 2011 17:32 (fourteen years ago)

j/k fun top 300!

Rovi Wade (some dude), Thursday, 3 March 2011 17:33 (fourteen years ago)

The Afghan Whigs

The Flaming Lips
PJ Harvey
The Jesus Lizard
Melvins

Fastnbulbous I love reading your columns and stuff but they all remind me of Mark Prindle's review of The Jam's "Dig the New Breed"

rip van wanko, Thursday, 3 March 2011 18:57 (fourteen years ago)

I guess you're talking about that 680 word first paragraph, heh. That was a brainstorm for a friend who wanted something on the 90s for a documentary that was meant to be pared down.

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 3 March 2011 19:06 (fourteen years ago)

Don't get me wrong I really do like your writing a lot, it just seems like every single paragraph is just overloaded with name dropping, all I can think is daaamn I got a long way to go

frogbs, Thursday, 3 March 2011 19:50 (fourteen years ago)

I'd have to spend some more time coming up with nine to add, but Silkworm certainly belongs on this list.

xxp - When summarizing a decade, it's a challenge to do it without mentioning numerous bands for sure ;) But I suppose I should scale it down some.

I keep forgetting about Royal Trux. It depends on the time of day, whether I feel like I love or hate Twin Infinitives. I just listened to Silkworm's Firewater for the first time in 14 years yesterday. Good stuff, but I remember why I don't go back to it often, just like Polvo.

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 3 March 2011 20:17 (fourteen years ago)

No, don't scale it down, I dig that aspect of your site. I remember reading one of your articles and seeing you talk about Hosono for a while which I thought was pretty badass. Who else drops names like that?? I just remembered that as I wondered why I had the urge to mention him in that other thread. That reminded me to ask, did you ever get your hands on Paraiso?? What were your thoughts on that one?

frogbs, Thursday, 3 March 2011 20:25 (fourteen years ago)

Outkast
UGK
DJ Quik
Gang Starr
Mobb Deep
Afghan Whigs
Too $hort
Redman
Tha Alkaholiks

Off the top. I like rock too just cant think of much that I rate higher than this stuff.
