Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 10:55 (twenty-three years ago)

indie (wooo, sound the klaxon!!! the americans are coming, the indieguilt thread is revving up again!!! take cover take cover 262 new answers in 45 minutes, aspirin manuscripts nearing completion, sinkahs r word definition crashes his pc, start again, ring the alarm, etc etc etc, and your mom!)

Bowling for Soup!

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 11:50 (twenty-three years ago)

i like that bowling for soup song as well, but i don't feel guilty

(my work on the r-word is a LONG LONG way from crashing my mac gareth!!)

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 12:01 (twenty-three years ago)

haha remember when bush sr. whispered "liberal"!? and then hillary whispered that a word rhymed with "rich"!?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 14:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Guilty may be too strong a term, but I can be found listening to a couple of Pink's singles now and then. "Get the Party Started" = this year's "Bootylicious!"

paul cox, Tuesday, 27 August 2002 17:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Is there "guilt" in music anymore? Everything seems so acceptable now. That's a good thing, of course.

Jody Beth Rosen, Tuesday, 27 August 2002 17:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Is there "guilt" in music anymore? Everything seems so acceptable now. That's a good thing, of course.

I'm changing my answer to "much of the rock 'n' roll and punk canon." (OMG I LIKE PATTI SMITH'S HORSES I AM A SUKKRR!)

Jody Beth Rosen, Tuesday, 27 August 2002 17:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Is it time for my bimonthly admittal that I quite like early Barenaked Ladies?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 17:38 (twenty-three years ago)

No it isn't, Dom.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 17:39 (twenty-three years ago)

rjd2 !!

simon trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 18:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah I can see how such a nearly universally-praised (by me even!) and fairly populist-sounding record can be considered a "guilty" pleasure.

OH WAIT IT'S ON DEF JUX OH NO

Nate Patrin, Tuesday, 27 August 2002 19:58 (twenty-three years ago)

patrin i was looking through the pfork mail archives the other day and found your classic email to me 'Jay-Z? What is this, the fuckin "Source"?' !!

simon trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 20:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah well that was retarded and I shoulda thought that through and I'm sorry. Not that I like Jay-Z now or anything (well maybe I'll pick up Reasonable Doubt) but I have better reasons for my boredom with him besides "OMG HE IS RICH AND FAMOUS". (If I want to listen to Biggie... I'LL BUY A BIGGIE CD)

Nate Patrin, Tuesday, 27 August 2002 20:24 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah but why do that when theres rjd2!!

simon trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 20:25 (twenty-three years ago)

anyway check this email i just got!!

!!!!!!!

simon trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 20:28 (twenty-three years ago)

If I don't feel guilty about liking the Coldplay single, can I feel guilty about anything? Admittedly I'd feel better if their album was a concept album about swallowing-not-spitting called "A Rush of Head to the Blood" (OK, someone must've done this gag already, but in the context of new research finding endorphin-like chemicals in semen?) Oh, and Sonic Youth, of course.

B:Rad (Brad), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 20:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I knew Danzig needed better publicity these days, but still.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 20:31 (twenty-three years ago)

But you like it! I can't POSSIBLY like a CD that you like! Shit hell damn!

Nate Patrin, Tuesday, 27 August 2002 20:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh Jesus. If I owned any Misfits albums I'd sell them.

Nate Patrin, Tuesday, 27 August 2002 20:33 (twenty-three years ago)

The new Coldplay album = wussy excellence. I'm not embarrassed though. Mock me if you wish.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 21:31 (twenty-three years ago)

*looks around guiltily*
the Coral.........

pete^f, Tuesday, 27 August 2002 22:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes another shaky hand up for Coldplay. I shouldn't like them but yet I always do. Same for Travis, although I came to my senses a bit with the recent album.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 22:47 (twenty-three years ago)

the vines single

boxcubed (boxcubed), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 23:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I second "Get This Party Started."

My name is Kenny, Tuesday, 27 August 2002 23:09 (twenty-three years ago)

no doubt - hella good
puddle of mudd - blurry
john mayer - no such thing

ernest (captainbadass), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 23:57 (twenty-three years ago)

this is a scary world where pink has to be considered a guilty pleasure.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 03:34 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, it's like 1984 all over again

also, new found glory - my friends over you

boxcubed (boxcubed), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 06:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Phill Collins - "In the Air Tonight". Who could not be moved by that song?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 07:15 (twenty-three years ago)

i second

no doubt - hella good

and i think Hola Hovito by Jay-Z was pretty cool, though that might've come out last year.

How about stuff you should like but don't? I can't like the Liars and can't really see the fuss about Fischerspooner who are ok but not amazing.

nick n, Wednesday, 28 August 2002 13:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm uhm, actually rather curious about The Music's forthcoming album (although having said that after their last single my enthusiasm has been severly dinted).

Roger Fascist, Wednesday, 28 August 2002 13:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I just bought the new coldplay and I want to throw it on the ground and jump on it repeatedly after the first listen.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 14:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Having just read the Time Out review of The Music's debut, that's exactly what I want to do too Chris, and I haven't even heard it yet.

Roger Fascist, Wednesday, 28 August 2002 15:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Oh Jesus. If I owned any Misfits albums I'd sell them"

...and some lucky prick would get them cheap.

Static Age is an absolutely terrific buzzsaw catchy punk album, used to be in the guilty pleasure file, is now in the make everyone on earth buy it file.

Couldn't care less abt the rest of their output.

gcannon, Wednesday, 28 August 2002 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

"Deliver me"-Sarah Brightman (Yeah, I know it isnt a new track but I only heard it for the first time this year)

"Toxicity"-System Of A Down

"Movies"-Alien Ant Farm

"Automatic high"-S Club Juniors

Michael Bourke, Wednesday, 28 August 2002 15:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually that was a tongue-in-cheek overreaction to the "ETHAN YOU ARE AN EVIL BLACK PERSON" e-mail with a Danzig reference in the address. Then again I am wondering if the person who sent it even knows if Danzig was even in a band before he released "Mother".

Also: "Hollywood Babylon" RULES.

Nate Patrin, Wednesday, 28 August 2002 15:38 (twenty-three years ago)

"toxicity" and "movies" are both great songs. WHY THE GUILT BOURKE?!

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

No, "Movies" is the sound of 1988 attempting desperately to return, and rightly being fought off at the gates.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 15:43 (twenty-three years ago)

dom, i think if i scroll up i'll find the words "barenaked ladies" above your name, which therefore renders anything you say further suspect.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 15:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Fuck.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 15:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Although "Shoe Box" really is great. Honest to god.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 15:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Ok, gotcha...

And yes, it does. So does "Hybrid Moments."

gcannon, Wednesday, 28 August 2002 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

"Toxicity" is the only song from SOAD I generally cant stand that prog-metal stuff like Tool. I guess I'm just surprised I like a SOAD track.

Alien Ant Farm are just the lamest band in the universe but that chorus is great and it reminds me of Pond for some reason. Anyone remember them??

Michael Bourke, Wednesday, 28 August 2002 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

My guilty pleasure this year? Music, specifically writing about it 'co I know it means I'm not writing my book which I'm supposed to be (Scottish Arts Council, grants, etc blah blah - some of you already know this, and have read drafts and commented) haha the other day my agent: "David - you'll change landscapes if you ever eventually hand it to me, mine, yours etc... your paintscapes are so beautiful" - he SAID this, down THE PHONE, my PHONE. I've finished his stupid book (The House, First Abrace the Wind) and I can see it now, breathless on the night stand, deadline between its teeth, a large staple in its shoulder, panting. He can have his book as soon as I get stamps, but now I'm writing my book, and when I write about music instead, it makes me feel utterly guilty but also happy.

So yeh, my music writing - Shazam!.

haha and ILblimminX.
