So where does one begin? I've heard good and not so good things about the Blood and Fire releases...

Justin, Tuesday, 27 August 2002 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Search: "Dub Gone Crazy" on Blood and Fire.

Mark Dixon (Mark Dixon), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

King Tubby's Special 1973-1976 double cd on Trojan, don't know if it's still in print. Must have though, one cd instrumental dub, second one brilliant vocal dub.

I like the first chapter of Dub Me Crazy better than the second one. Second one has weirder effects but the "songs" somehow are a bit weaker.

Oh yeah a recent find: Harry Muddie meets King Tubby's - In Dub Conference Vol.3 . Very relaxed.

Omar, Tuesday, 27 August 2002 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i have a cd with a photocopied picture of him wearing a crown on it and everything but the song and album titles written in arabic, called 'king at the controls.' there are more tracks on the cd than are listed on the back, too.

'real gone crazy dub,' 'jah love rockers dub,' 'zion gate dub,' 'money dub,' 'marcus dub,' 'garage music dub,' 'east avenue skank,' 'close to jah,' 'dub the right way.' i'm trying to find the song with the cool horns. oh. 'close to jah' is the horn song. i love that one.

king tubby meets roots radics - dangerous dub is a good one. it's easy to find. 'rice grain rock' from that. and 'banana and yam skank.'

if dj was your trade.

king tubby is pretty consistent, i guess. a bad king tubby song would be one that sounded like all the rest, i guess. and if it did, like, it would- like, even if it sucked it would still be great. like, the worst he could do is making a great song that sounds like a dozen other great songs. but, uh. you know?

dk, Tuesday, 27 August 2002 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

The Trojan catalogue recently got the heck reissued out of it, due to it being acquired by someone new, I think. So 73-76 is out on CD and LP even! I just picked me up a dozen or so of the 3-cd Trojan Box Sets (subdivided into flavors like 'mod reggae' 'ska' 'roots' 'dub' etc.) and I'm in headphone heaven. Trojan Records site

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah you're right I now remember seeing 1973-1976 on LP in the shops recently. Anyone with a passing interest in dub should get it on sight.

Omar, Tuesday, 27 August 2002 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

search: king tubby meets rockers uptown! surprised no one's mentioned this one yet...one of the best albums of all time, and certainly the best dub alb of all time, excepting maybe blackboard jungle dub or super ape.

search also: dub like dirt, a few others i have at home that i'll dig up the titles for later.

destroy: nothing really...although more and more lee perry-stylee dodgy cheapo collections are appearing, although hopefully that has petered out along with the dub fad of the late 90s.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

and justin, you might need to know - if you don't - that rockers uptown is technically an augustus pablo record.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

"Bag A Wire Dub" = BASSLINE ALERT!

Paul (scifisoul), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Most of the Blood and Fire releases are credited to King Tubby and Friends, and the Friends (Prince Jammy, etc.) probably get the majority of the tracks, so they're great for dub, not so great for King Tubby*. The exception is King Tubby and Soul Syndicate - Freedom Sounds in Dub, which is, I believe, 100% Tubshots. I got that one out of the bargain bucket, so you might be lucky.

*Not that I can tell the difference, mind.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 06:33 (twenty-two years ago)

There is indeed vast oceans of stuff and I like all the B&F King Tubby "Dub Gone Crazy" releases but if I was off to a desert island I'd definitly take "King Tubby Special" on Trojan.

KT Meets Rockers Uptown is indeed good and is basically an Augustus Pablo record but in reggae its much more confused as to who's record it actually is between the roles of producer, engineer and musician.

Winkelmann, Wednesday, 28 August 2002 07:52 (twenty-two years ago)

In the UK there's a superb comp of earlyish King Tubby material on the 'budget' label Metro. It's called 'Essential Dub: Ruff Cuts and Hard Riddims From The Mixmaster', and is v. nicely packaged and annotated by ex-NME hack Ian McCann. It includes one of my all-time fave dubs, 'Sir Niney's Rock', a v. unique-sounding funk-dub fusion that kind of makes clear the music's debt to American r'n'b.

Also, the Music Club budget Augustus Pablo sampler 'The Great Pablo' includes virtually every track from 'Ital Dub', the first alb that Pablo made w/Tubby.

But yes, '...Meets Rockers Uptown' would also be my number one choice.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 08:20 (twenty-two years ago)

You should also search out his collaborations with Vyvian Jackson aka Yabby U, "King Tubby's Prophesy of Dub" is released under Yabby U's name but really it's 100% Tubby. Some very tough, dark riddims.

Other than that I can only echo everyone else, the Trojan 1973-76 album is essential. The filtering of sound on that album predates its recent use in French house music by decades. "King Tubby Meets the Rockers..." on JetStar is an essential purchase, but an alternative to that could be Augustus Pablo's "El Rockers" on Pressure Sounds which has almost all the tracks of the aforementioned album on it plus more. Also you can get it on vinyl.

Destroy, absolutely nothing, I've yet to buy a bad Tubby record, the guy is one of the few producers in music truly deserving of the title genius.

steveeeeeeeee, Wednesday, 28 August 2002 09:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm afraid if I start buying King Tubby CDs I won't stop. So far I don't have any, but I'm pretty sure I will like him. (Same goes for Lee Perry.)

DeRayMi, Wednesday, 28 August 2002 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

he did the suprisingly good soundtrack to Grand Theft Auto Three.

anthony easton (anthony), Friday, 30 August 2002 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Following on from Andrew L - the Metro comp "More Bass Culture" selected by Ian McCann is 90% King Tubby (+ a Scientist track and I think some Prince Jammy)and is fantastic. I'm away from my recds at the moment so can't look up exact titles, but the highlights are two dubs of John Holt's 'Ali Baba'.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 30 August 2002 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
Only 3 of the tracks on Dub Me Crazy vol 1 were mixed by Tubby, but it's still really good so no matter.

In addition to all the above, check out:
Freedom Sounds in Dub on Blood & Fire
100% of Dub--some overlap with others mentioned here, but you can find it for cheap
Dangerous Dub

oops (Oops), Sunday, 16 November 2003 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

of course, it's very easy to say "dub is soooo overrated" in this era of plentiful rocksteady, roots, r+b and dancehall reissues to get excited about. and i have said it many many times, so seeing this thread i got embaressed and went back and listened to my dub cds and goddamit king tubby is really, really good.

i'd always seen King Tubby's Special 1973-1976 in the local record store and gosh, it seems sort of overpriced (idon't know how it's priced in your town). so i would maybe recommend buying trojan box set: dub and trojan box set: dub, vol. 2 because they're easy to find and economical. then, if you line up the cds in a disc changer w/ box set #1 as 1-3 and box set #2 as 4-6, you can assemble the following 1 hr. precis of tubby's special:

1. (disc 1, 7) rebel dance
2. (disc 4, 2) casanova dub
3. (disc 5, 13) silver bullet
4. (disc 2, 7) rasta locks
5. (disc 2, 16) dubbing With the observer
6. (disc 3, 12) sir niney's rock
7. (disc 1, 9) king tubby's conversation dub
8. (disc 2, 1) king tubby's explosion! dub
9. (disc 2, 10) king tubby's patient dub
10. (disc 3, 5) turntable dub
11. (disc 3, 15) king tubby's badness dub
12. (disc 1, 15) rema dub
13. (disc 3, 13) big boss of dubs
14. (disc 5, 9) straight to channel one head
15. (disc 4, 13) dancing version
16. (disc 2, 9) the gorgon of dubs & horns
17. (disc 5, 1) i trim the barber
18. (disc 6, 4) another version

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 04:08 (twenty-one years ago)

haha i might try that tonight as i have those!

i'll second oops recommendation of Freedom Sounds in dub.

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 04:13 (twenty-one years ago)

hell yeah on freedom sounds, it's got "great stone" (though on another topic, i do not recommend the 2-disc scientist volume by blood and fire)

now the thing about dub gone crazy is that it has the utterly transcendent "dub fi gwan"

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 04:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i gotta admit i haven't yet worked out whats so great about scientist. i've got the earlier blood and fire disc and an old set of him dubbing up some clancy eccles. and, ah...?
i have to listen more closely to the tracks on those trojan dub sets i guess.

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 04:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Forgot about Termination Dub, since it's credited to Glen Brown, who produced the tracks. It's one of my favorite Jamaican cds. It's a Blood & Fire release so you know the sound quality is excellent.
Also worth picking up: Psalms of Drums which may be credited to Carl Patterson

Someone mentioned the Harry Mudie/King Tubby In Dub Conference, vol 3 upthread. I'm guessing he only had volume 3, because vols 1 and 2 are just as good, ie really fucking good. Hard to find, but definitely worth a search. STRINGS in dub, mang, and it doesn't sound cheesy.

xpost
gaz, you mean Scientist: Dub in the Roots Tradition? I love that cd. My favorite Scientist LP is probably Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires, followed by Meets Space Invaders and Heavyweight Dub Champion. Been looking for Meets Pac-Man but can't find it ANYwhere.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 04:30 (twenty-one years ago)

personally i think scientist comes down to "rids the world of the evil curse of the vampire" and "wins the world cup". it's the beginning of the hip-hop era and the tracks are wound super-tight and funky. it just kicks in a way. a friend of mine mixes up those albums with italo disco and newer tech-house tracks and it sounds right in a way that glen brown wouldn't (though glen nails the house feeling somehow with his spacy bleeps and double-time rhythms).

the thing about those blood and fire recordings of scientist - he was like 16-20 when he made those?

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 04:33 (twenty-one years ago)

and i don't know why i said 2-disc set, i think i was confused. i meant roots tradition, too, though maybe it's time for a relisten (i need to relisten to arkology, i totally didn't get the point when that came out).

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Scientist leans too much on the whoopy keyboard sound (which admittedly is pretty cool) on World Cup. Still pretty good though, just not one of my favs.

yeah, he was really young. Supposedly Tubby just let him loose in the studio: "oh you think you could do this, kid?", and those tracks are some of the first he ever mixed by himself.

(yes relisten to arkology! I kinda dismissed it for about 2-3 years, underwhelmed by it after the huge hype it got. disc 3 is awesome. "Make Up Your Mind"= aural perfection)

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 04:39 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah its roots trad oops. its just seems so bare or something. stripped. i know those aren't necessarily bad things...i just dunno.

more volume needed maybe! (on my part)

are any of the dubs on dub gone crazy scientist?

yeah that glen brown set is great. arkology is essential.

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 04:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I believe a good many tracks on the first Dub Gone Crazy are Scientist. I think the second one is just Tubby and Jammy though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 04:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i revise my position then. scientist is the shit!

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

As much as I like Rockers Uptown (and that's A LOT), I have to say that King Tubby's Prophecy of Dub (which someone big up-ed earlier) is just as good. One of the top five dub albums (along with Super Ape and Pick a Dub and something else I am forgetting.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 04:46 (twenty-one years ago)

thats only 4 Alex!

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 04:48 (twenty-one years ago)

SOMETHING ELSE I AM FORGETTING IS FIVE!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 04:52 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, but..o i see! uptown is in the 5 then, despite prophecy being better.

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 04:53 (twenty-one years ago)

AS GOOD!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)

also is super ape a dub album???? i mean it uses dub techniiques, there are reused rythms i spose but its songs basically...

(not being picky, really. just a bit anal)

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)

But for me the rhythms on Roots Trad are strong enough that they don't need wild mixing or overdubs. Like, check out the third track, Dub 16. Wicked, how the bass and drums lock up. LIkewise, "Love You Dub". I love the way he filters the bass, too. Particularly on "Sunshine Version" and "African Daughter Dub" (rubbery!)

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 04:56 (twenty-one years ago)

having vocals /= not a dub album

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 04:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Prince Jammy mixed most of Dub Gone Crazy. Tubby mixed only 3, including "Dub Fi Gwan". The rest were mixed by Prince Phillip and Scientist---the liner notes give Scientist credit for one and 'possibly' two.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 04:59 (twenty-one years ago)

no Alex of course not. but at the time a dub album was a set of dub reconstructions of existing material. i think that perry album is something different (ie a new set of songs produced dubbily)

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

All those tracks are dubs of existing songs, gaz.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 05:04 (twenty-one years ago)

i nominate the congos as #5. because a) i'm a tool and b) it's pretty

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 05:05 (twenty-one years ago)

o!

i is idiot...sorry.

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 05:05 (twenty-one years ago)

shit what are they dubs of?

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 05:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Other Perry productions.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 05:09 (twenty-one years ago)

ok i checked amg. why did i ever think otherwise? sorry

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 05:10 (twenty-one years ago)

The Heart of the Congos, on the other hand, is NOT a dub album, but you probably know that (it is, by the way, my favorite vocal reggae album EVAH.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 05:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i think that perry album is something different (ie a new set of songs produced dubbily)

Which made me think of Augustus Pablo's East of the River Nile which I think I like better than Rockers Uptown. Who's with me? Anyone?

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 05:15 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yeah. right. where's my brain tonight?

um, what about dj albums? i must have been under the impression that the congos were singing over lee perry treatments of existing rhythms, mainly because i can hardly believe that anybody could put together an original production as dubbed-out as "fisherman"

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 05:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i also wanted to nominate something by i roy or prince far i but i guess those wouldn't count either? and pick a dub probably not either? (not that i'd nominate that one but to nail down the "dub album" category thought i'd ask)

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 05:19 (twenty-one years ago)

what are you nominating things for?

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 05:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Pick A Dub is definitely dub.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 05:21 (twenty-one years ago)

ok i listened to half of roots tradition and there is way more happening there than i remembered (trying to make sensible calls on dub you mainly listen(ed) to when stoned c/d?)

as for my stupidity over super ape i dug it out to try and think why i thought it wasn't what it is. and there is a full vocal (Prince Jazzbo) on Croaking Lizard which has gotta be unusual for a dub album. i still wonder if some of the other vocals aren't recorded for the record rather than snatched from earlier versions.

plus does anyone else love the tubby dub on the discomix of the Niney produced Sufferation by Tyrone Taylor?

and a further recommendation for tubby dub is Johnny in the Echo Chamber by the Aggrovators.

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

that Aggrovators cd is on my Xmas list.

I think a lot of the vocals on Super Ape were in fact recorded specifically for it. The backing tracks had been used before though, albeit in slightly different forms, ie he put overdubs on them, merged two tracks together: you know, the standard Perry techniques for getting the most use out of the stuff musicians in his studio layed down.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

hey oops. do you have the Johnny Clarke record Echo Chamber is dubbed from? I think i read somewhere it had been reissued by Trojan at the wrong speed. Can you confirm?

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think it's taken from one album, but rather a singles comp. Hang on...
Yeah, the non-dub version of those tracks is Don't Trouble Trouble, which AMG says was released on the Attack label in '94. The same reviewer gives that 4.5 stars, but Echo Chamber only 3---even though he notes "Tubby (and Lee) are in fine form".

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah thats the one. i think some dude on amazon maybe(?) said it was worthless cos it was mastered at the wrong speed. i'd kinda like to get it cos i like echo chamber so much, but...

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

For those of you in the US, dustygroove.com has those Tubby/Mudie discs back in stock. Of course if you're in Chicago, you can just go to the actual shop.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Anybody heard Rockers Meets King Tubbys In A Firehouse? How does it compare to Rockers Uptown?

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
recently i've been playing the two "Dub Gone Crazy" volumes and these are still the fucking perfect dub compilations ever imo, despite the fact that it's not really King Tubby himself on most of the cuts. i've given so many other dub records and comps a try (numerous Aggrovators, Roots Radics, Scientist, etc..) and they always fall short in some way that I can't pin down. Blood & Fire really struck gold with their selections on these volumes. still haven't heard "King Tubby's Special" or "If Deejay Was My Trade" so I still hold out hope that there are other good dub records out there...

oh, I do like "Meets Rockers Uptown" too :0)-~~

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 21 April 2005 01:59 (twenty years ago)

The King Tubby meets Harry Mudie series is the best Tubby I've heard.
East of the River Nile is the best Pablo I've heard. Can someone make a case for why Rockers Uptown is always THE one mentioned?

xpost mully knows about the greatness of the Mudie albums! (btw, I haven't forgotten about sending you those cds)

Anybody heard Rockers Meets King Tubbys In A Firehouse? How does it compare to Rockers Uptown?

I'm no dub connoisseur, but I like In a Firehouse more, but I've only recently heard either album, and haven't tried to formulate why (though I think In a Firehouse has better effects or something).

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Thursday, 21 April 2005 02:02 (twenty years ago)

east isn't really a dub record yeah? its an instrumental pablo album.

yeah those mudie discs are headfucks. strings!

yes

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 21 April 2005 02:07 (twenty years ago)

yeah you're right. east isn't a true dub album, but I think that's why I like it better. most of the songs though could be put on a dub comp and no one would bat an eye.

This is the best Tubby-related collection that i've heard : http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/music/pid/1252120/a/Dub+Like+Dirt+(1975-1977).htm
I think it even beats Dub Gone Crazy in out-and-out haunting tunefulness. Of course a lot of it Jammy and Phil Smart, but what the heck.

On a non-Tubby tack, Studio One Dub is much, much better than I expected it to be : http://www.souljazzrecords.co.uk/release.php?ReleaseId=120&NavId=2_1&Section=1

It's really simple stuff in the main - few tricks and few really wild effects, yet it's quite unique. Worth having for the terrific Running Dub, a version of Delroy Wilson's 'Run Run'.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 21 April 2005 08:19 (twenty years ago)

I like Dub Like Dirt too.

Has Blood and Fire finished?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 21 April 2005 09:11 (twenty years ago)

I don't know. There's a 'best-of' Blood and Fire out just now, so I assume not, but who knows?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 21 April 2005 09:21 (twenty years ago)

i used to have Dub Like Dirt but not anymore ;(

Amon (eman), Thursday, 21 April 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

east of the river nile is my favorite pablo, too. i love the linvall thompson dub stuff, black uhuru's brutal dub, and bunny wailer's dubdisco. my fave tubby track is -- easily -- "alphabet."

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Thursday, 21 April 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

I still don't think "Super Ape" really qualifies

Schwip Schwap (schwip schwap), Thursday, 21 April 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

isn't the new blood & fire a comp of favourites from the b&f catalogue by wosname from simply red

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

It is.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

the new "Rough guide to Dub" basically takes tracks from B&F releases too. I think theres like one or two from elsewhere.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

Well there is a lot of good dub on B&F (also some dull dub too) so that doesn't shock me.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

forgot about this one, some of the tracks are great, the rest decent
http://www.reggae-reviews.com/dubme.jpg

Amon (eman), Friday, 22 April 2005 02:04 (twenty years ago)

I think Barrow Boy compiles them. To their credit, he leaves the B&F stuff to others to select/review in the book version.

Reason I asked was I read somewhere that Barrow Boy was working for someone else, or at least compiling and annotating for someone else.

Meanwhile, other people have been compiling and annotating for B&F.

I suppose all this could be cleared up by visiting their menko message board, but...

I hope lots of Mick Hucknall fans snap that comp up.

two years pass...

speaking of king tubby, have heard a couple of tracks from that new Black & White compilation by him and Carlton Patterson and both sounded great coming out of the radio.

('oops' mentioned it 3 years ago but i think it's newly readily available)

which is the best rockers uptown version to get? mine is on jetstar and has a better sleeve to the other one (official one?) but i thnk the tracklisting is a bit different. the low end on this one isnt as impressive as i might like either although i think that might just be normal.

(xpost) Yeah I want that Hot Pot compilation. Sounds great.

I have the older Shanachie version. It sounds quite good. I think the newer version has bonus tracks which probably make it the best.

three weeks pass...

I'm listening to the Carlton Patterson / King Tubby Black & White CD now - maybe it's the sunshine but it does sound very very good indeed.

Not on Spotify! But seriously, it's awesome to take everyone's suggestions and roll them into one mondo playlist. I tried to stick to songs and albums that were deemed to be Tubby himself (ie, not Jammy, etc.) aside from the Dub Gone Crazy series (which I think most people associate w Tubby so much that it's fine). The Special 1973-76 comp wasn't on Spotify so I took the advice upthread to use the Trojan Dub series instead. There was only Vol. 1 -- but I was able to find most of the Vol. 2 songs on other comps.

Also, I made the playlist collaborative if anyone wants to add stuff I missed -- or correct things I may have gotten wrong -- be my guest!

I bought "Crucial Dub" for about £3 years ago from a crappy CD shop in Colchester and it's still one of my favourite King Tubby comps. I wonder how many actual tracks he ended up producing. Must be in the 1000s, right?
