Asking strictly about Ipecac releases here (not Patton's Pranzo Oltranzista, or the Young Gods' earlier albums, or Morricone's career in general)... yes, lots of these folks have released recordings on various other labels. Let's talk Ipecac.

My opinions above, but I want to hear yours, too, especially as I've not heard lots of this.

Whoops, guess I should've called this C/D: Ipecac, not S/D... fuck it.

Damn this thread seems so....different without ilxor (ilxor), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:07 (fourteen years ago)

Hella is so not a dud.

'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:08 (fourteen years ago)

Oh, btw, here comes the Whiney G. batsignal:

Circus Devils are classic for me too.

'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:09 (fourteen years ago)

what are they like &/or what do i try to hear first?

Damn this thread seems so....different without ilxor (ilxor), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:09 (fourteen years ago)

I don't know. Its a Robert Pollard side project, probably the weirdest of the bunch too. Proggy and messy, with few of the classic rock hooks that influence his other stuff.

'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:10 (fourteen years ago)

ahhh Mr. Pollard, got it. that kinda automatically raises my "avoid" flag (like GBV in parts, don't have much time for Pollard's too numerous to count side works) but i'll file that & hear it someday ;)

Damn this thread seems so....different without ilxor (ilxor), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:11 (fourteen years ago)

I mean, if you think you might be into the weird psych-prog babblings and film score like interludes of Mr. Pollard, you might dig this stuff and Sgt. Disco would probably be as good a place as any to start.

Ha, well then, that answers that!

'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:12 (fourteen years ago)

the weird psych-prog babblings and film score like interludes

this is better, really! i will def keep an eye out. just no more lo-fi classic rock stuff from him plz ;_;

Damn this thread seems so....different without ilxor (ilxor), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:15 (fourteen years ago)

Ipecac is like my fave label, and I have opinions about all these bands. Ask me questions, ilxor.

Also, I will add that the first Eyvind Kang is prolly the most slept-on album of the 00s. It's perfect.

open jason segal (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:16 (fourteen years ago)

oh man where to start

Damn this thread seems so....different without ilxor (ilxor), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:19 (fourteen years ago)

fav stuff here is Dalek (everything), Bohren, that Young Gods record, Beak>, Tomahawk first 2 records, obviously Isis/Melvins, the Fantomas horror film scores thing, Kaada stuff I've heard, the abrasive Mouse on Mars thing...

not so much into the really spastic/jittery things here: Hella, the Locust, &c. though obviously there are exceptions (Zu, Orthrelm [though that record's a bit of a slog to get through for 45 min])...

anyway- tell me what else is good !!

Damn this thread seems so....different without ilxor (ilxor), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:23 (fourteen years ago)

awful label, awful thread.

Fuck these fake assholes. They suck now.#0 (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:25 (fourteen years ago)

of the things you haven't mentioned yet these are my faves

EYVIND KANG's Virginal Co Ordinates is like the most gorgeous record. I totally want it played at my wedding and/or funeral

KID 606's Down With The Scene is a little dated but is still a glitchtastic rager

SAX RUINS is great too

open jason segal (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:26 (fourteen years ago)

Tomahawk was horrible!

sarahel, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:26 (fourteen years ago)

no wai, Mit Gas is a killer rock-rock record.

open jason segal (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:26 (fourteen years ago)

Things not mentioned:

v/a - Great Phone Calls - reissue from Amarillo records. Hilarity.

Fuck these fake assholes. They suck now.#0 (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:27 (fourteen years ago)

well, whatever song it was that was posted on Paper Thin Walls back in the day sucked hard.

sarahel, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:28 (fourteen years ago)

Duane Denison + John Stanier = pretty much awesome no matter who else is in the band imo. i haven't heard Tomahawk - Anonymous, is that any good if i dug the first two?

Damn this thread seems so....different without ilxor (ilxor), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:28 (fourteen years ago)

SAX RUINS is great too

instead of using Google i would like you to spend yr time telling me if this is Ruins-related (i assume so?)

i'd tell steve shasta to fuck off but whiney & i do the same thing in various threads we hate so hey, have at it buddy!

Damn this thread seems so....different without ilxor (ilxor), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:30 (fourteen years ago)

why didn't you like the Zach Hill solo record? I thought it was pretty awesome.

sarahel, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:32 (fourteen years ago)

what whiney said. great label - not consistenty good, perhaps, but consistently interesting. leans heavily on great stuff though - fantomas, melvins, morricone, mondo cane, guapo, mike patton, ruins, flat earth society, bohren, zu, unsane, trio convulsant, tango saloon, dalek, ex girl, tomahawk, phantomsmasher... and yes, eyvind kang is absolutely amazing. so much good stuff in his catalogue, but virginal co-ordinates is one of my favourite albums of all time.

EYVIND KANG's Virginal Co Ordinates is like the most gorgeous record. I totally want it played at my wedding and/or funeral

we did! 'marriage of days' followed the ceremony.

on the dud front: tipsy, northern state, qui, pink anvil, otto von schirach.

the golding institute album is very much worth hearing, but only once.

sax ruins is indeed ruins, but with multi-tracked sax instead of bass. totally nuts.

m the g, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:32 (fourteen years ago)

well, whatever song it was that was posted on Paper Thin Walls back in the day sucked hard.

Yay, you remember! :)

Yeah that was the third record. Fucking TERRIBLE. I savaged it in that review iirc. The first two Tomahawk records were swag as fuck though

open jason segal (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:34 (fourteen years ago)

i listened to it because it got such a horrible review, thinking, can it really be that bad ... and yes, indeed, it was.

sarahel, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:34 (fourteen years ago)

eyvind kang is absolutely amazing. so much good stuff in his catalogue, but virginal co-ordinates is one of my favourite albums of all time.

just wanna cosign this, imo the Kang is better than anything else on the label except maybe the best Melvins and that awesome Young Gods record.

sleeve, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:35 (fourteen years ago)

I totally want it played at my wedding and/or funeral

lol just noticed this - same difference, huh?

Damn this thread seems so....different without ilxor (ilxor), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:35 (fourteen years ago)

I really like that third tomahawk album. though admittedly, it's not as good as the first two...

m the g, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:36 (fourteen years ago)

Can't stand almost everything Patton has done music-wise, but the Morricone and Bohren alone make the label worth existing. Phantomsmasher record is really good too of things which haven't been mentioned.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:39 (fourteen years ago)

who put out the Zach Hill/Mick Barr duo record?

sarahel, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:40 (fourteen years ago)

oh that's right Ipecac did the Alan Bishop-curated Morricone set, that thing is incredible.

sleeve, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:42 (fourteen years ago)

^^ YES

Damn this thread seems so....different without ilxor (ilxor), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:44 (fourteen years ago)

The Mugison records are great. Love that crazy Icelandic dude.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:45 (fourteen years ago)

who put out the Zach Hill/Mick Barr duo record?

5RC put out Shred Earthship (love that record) but I think there is one other collab out there, right?

'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:48 (fourteen years ago)

my heart broke when the Northern State record arrived in the mail

open jason segal (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 23:16 (fourteen years ago)

hey Whiney i found some Ruins stuff not on Ipecac, plz tell me if it's good ----- Hyderomastgroningem and/or Refusal Fossal. same w/ kid606, found his Mille Plateaux thing w/ the light blue cover from like 2000-01. C/D?

Damn this thread seems so....different without ilxor (ilxor), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 21:50 (fourteen years ago)

Hyderomastgroningem is classic, 606 on Mille Plateaux is dud

gawka flocka flamewar (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 21:53 (fourteen years ago)

just found this, too-- must heart asap!

Damn this thread seems so....different without ilxor (ilxor), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 21:57 (fourteen years ago)

aside from Symphonica (the ideas of which are far more successfully realised by Koenjihyakkei), I'm not sure Ruins have ever released a sub-par album. it's all good.

Pallaschtom and Tzomborgha are probably their peak, though. they're not only the most insanely complex, but also have the most well-developed melodic emphasis, if you're looking for more like 'Praha in Spring' – though that is an unusually melodic/catchy piece for this band. the L. Shankar and Messiaen covers on Tzomborgha may be what you're looking for...

m the g, Thursday, 10 March 2011 08:24 (fourteen years ago)

instead of bumping this thread for no reason, thought i'd give an update on some recent ipecac & related listening-

Ennio Morricone: picked up the Ipecac 2-CD comp. compiled by Alan Bishop(!) and yes it is fantastic, thank you Ipecac

kid606: against Whiney's advice, picked up PS I Love You (on Mille Plateaux) and it's kinda like Autechre/Oval but boringer? is this guy any good on other releases? help

Orthrelm: pulled out OV for first listen in a couple years... dud, sorry. changing my vote :(

Ruins: decided to finally pick up a physical Ruins album, couldnt find the Ipecac stuff so went w/ Hyderomastgroningem (on Tzadik)... holy shit, great record. not as frenetic as i expected going in. gonna pick up the other one in the used bins soon: Refusal Fossil (on Skin Graft). love this band so much

ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 00:16 (fourteen years ago)

I'll rep for pretty much anything on Skin Graft.

sarahel, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 00:17 (fourteen years ago)

"is this guy any good on other releases?"

I never really dug kid606 super much, but that's probably his least representative record. Most of the other stuff is glitchcore. Pretty sure Down With The Scene is on Ipecac and that's pretty easy to find.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 02:29 (fourteen years ago)

how is OV a dud?

Dominique, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 02:34 (fourteen years ago)

great concept, great execution, kinda a big chore to listen to :/

ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 03:16 (fourteen years ago)

what about it is chore-like?

I know I have to be in a certain mood to get into it, and if I'm not in that mood it gives me a headache, but when I'm in the mood, it's great.

sarahel, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 03:21 (fourteen years ago)

repetition. blazingly fast, loud, maddening repetition. for 45 minutes. aaaarrrghh. i know i should like it on paper given all the other psych/drone/noise shit i listen to. maybe i wasnt in the right mood for it this time?

ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 03:35 (fourteen years ago)
