I'd pick Tommy Stinson or Grant Hart over either ...

BlackIronPrison, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:17 (fourteen years ago)

I really like the grandpaboy stuff, so Westerberg.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:18 (fourteen years ago)

Chris Mars had a couple of decent tracks way back when too iirc

Darin, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:19 (fourteen years ago)

are you including Mould's Sugar work?

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:19 (fourteen years ago)

No -I think we should go with the strictly defined solo stuff

Darin, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:20 (fourteen years ago)

Mould, exclusively on the throatiness of his scream.

In that case, Westerberg by light years.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:23 (fourteen years ago)

yeah I would pick Chris Mars too, based on my memories of his first solo album, which I stupidly sold and have never been able to find a download of

You hurt me deeply. You hurt me deeply in my heart. (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:24 (fourteen years ago)

i dunno workbook and black sheets of rain are aight.

gr8080 sings the blues (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:25 (fourteen years ago)

yeah both of those first two Mould albums are pretty strong

Darin, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:28 (fourteen years ago)

Chris Mars was the proto-Grohl.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:31 (fourteen years ago)

I revisited Workbook and Black Sheets recently and uh just couldn't take it. threw the tapes out.

Mould. I've never heard the dude sound like he's desperately like he's trying to remember how to do what used to come easily.

da croupier, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 21:22 (fourteen years ago)

workbook and black sheets of rain are awesome, so bob (like the 3rd one too )

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 21:26 (fourteen years ago)

i know some dont like black sheets of rain as its too depressing but its a fucking great album. Just dug out my cd to put it on actually

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 21:27 (fourteen years ago)

Awesome song

Mould's first 3 or 4 solo albums are mostly great. Westerberg lost me after the first single or two. More's the pity.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 10 March 2011 01:40 (fourteen years ago)

I like this one:

I haven't heard enough of either to vote. The two Westerberg albums I have aren't great, but I love this one song (weird set-up here...):

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Wednesday, 16 March 2011 00:01 (fourteen years ago)

Aw c'mon, Loud Bomb were...................

This time I'm siding with Westerberg. Workbook was great and his last one so so but Mould solo is average at best

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Thursday, 17 March 2011 02:34 (fourteen years ago)

suicaine gratification is the worst fucking title in the history of anything, not very good musically either

buzza, Thursday, 17 March 2011 03:20 (fourteen years ago)

first Westerberg solo was the only one I bothered with, had enough. also, he rather nastily remarked at the time that all the 'Mats records were solo albums.

Fuck bein' hard, Dr Morbz is complicated (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 17 March 2011 03:31 (fourteen years ago)

suicaine gratifaction is secretly a really great record

Brad Nelson (BradNelson), Thursday, 17 March 2011 03:48 (fourteen years ago)

nine years pass...

^ co-sign. listening through his solo stuff for the first proper time and 5 tracks in i'm really enjoying it

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Monday, 3 August 2020 13:43 (five years ago)

feels like a very bright day in autumn walking record though, rather than a summer one

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Monday, 3 August 2020 13:47 (five years ago)

Tears Rolling Up and Born For Me are two of my favourite Paul Westerberg songs, sappy as they are.

Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 3 August 2020 15:42 (five years ago)

This is probably not a popular take, but I kind of wish he'd just gotten better at being middle-of-the-road Q magazine guy, instead of becoming Mr Scratchy Home Recordings

Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 3 August 2020 15:44 (five years ago)

I think if he’d stayed the middle of the road Q magazine we would have gotten a few great, decently produced ballads (I don’t rate much of his attempts to rock in the last 25 years) rather than pretending it was 1983 again.

Master of Treacle, Monday, 3 August 2020 15:49 (five years ago)

Just listen to Runaway Wind a few times to get it out of your system. That song is all the middle-of-the-road sonic elements and the sweet & sappy lyrics u love 💕

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Monday, 3 August 2020 15:51 (five years ago)

This stuff is kind of tolerable I guess but not sure why I should actively listen to it.

Time Will Show Leo Weiser (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 3 August 2020 16:01 (five years ago)

But will give it another try, I guess

Time Will Show Leo Weiser (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 3 August 2020 16:16 (five years ago)

This poll got it right, IMHO.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Monday, 3 August 2020 18:15 (five years ago)

I agree. Westerberg's recent dormancy as a recording artist puts him at a greater disadvantage, but regardless the only solo Westerberg I ever listen to is Stereo/Mono. Excellent pair of records, but Mould's already put out several with his current trio alone.

birdistheword, Monday, 3 August 2020 20:22 (five years ago)

My favorite Westerberg solo thing after 13 Songs — which I still mostly like — was 49:00.

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Monday, 3 August 2020 21:57 (five years ago)

‘Things” and a couple others are a bit dull, but I’m very fond of that record, especially Runaway Wind and Even Here We Are.

Knocking On Mine never fails to make me smile - it’s so irresistibly cheerful like “I will dare”

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 4 August 2020 10:53 (five years ago)

two years pass...

I had no idea this happened - Bob Mould joined the encore for a Paul Westerberg show in Austin, TX in 1993. (Paul sang lead vocals without a guitar while Mould handled lead guitar during these numbers.) They reportedly did the Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog" too.

I cannot love Bob Mould's music.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Monday, 20 February 2023 23:48 (two years ago)

But can you like it?

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 21 February 2023 03:19 (two years ago)

Thanks, birdistheword!

after the pinefox (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 21 February 2023 03:34 (two years ago)

xp Not much, and I have tried.

Westerberg, on the other hand, I cannot help but love.
