was thinking about this after "black country rock" popped up on my ipod... there must be a million songs that ripped off or paid tribute to bolan.

Can we list them all?

"Panic" by The Smiths is a faithful tribute to "Metal Guru"

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:50 (fourteen years ago)

Mott's All the Young Dudes and the Who's Squeezebox both reference T. Rex

Mungo Jerry's "In the Summertime" was kinda seen as one at the time (at least in terms of Tyrannosaurus Rex).

David Garza's a pretty blunt/open fan as can be heard on a lot of his stuff but my secret favorite along those lines is "Slave":

Meantime there's always Prince:

Well, I didn't want to call it a rip-off because Moz is clearly a big fan. xp

Actually, "You Better, You Bet" is the Who song: "I drunk myself blind to the sound of old T. Rex and Who's Next."

Green's "Technology" is a great "Jeepster" homage, right down to the Bolany screams -- only Jeff Lescher could pull those off. I mean, aside from Bolan.

Jedrzej Dmochowski, and his earlier power-pop band The VIPs. Serious SERIOUS T-Rex simulation. Seek his solo album "Stallions Of My Heart".

"Hot Girls in Good Moods" by Butch Walker and the Let's Go Out Tonites. The intro is almost exactly the same as "20th Century Boy", right down to that little yelp. Actually, the whole song kinda sounds like a great lost T.Rex track.

I've often wished someone would make a Vaughn Bode/Ralph Bakshi-style cartoon about/soundtracked by T. Rex. they're such perfect compliments/analogues of one another. I've considered doing it myself but I am lazy.

You hurt me deeply. You hurt me deeply in my heart. (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 21:04 (fourteen years ago)

Maybe re-track Wizards with Bolan stuff? It's already Bakshi ripping Bode.

Bode's Bolan-ness was so intense that I admit I sometimes forget Bolan did NOT draw Cheech Wizard...

I'll take u down 2 the dark grosse chap L (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 21:06 (fourteen years ago)

yeah Wizards is close, but the soundtrack sucks! it just seems like something that SHOULD exist but doesn't, y'know? Like make a 3 minute cartoon about dragons and cadillacs and a guy with a Les Paul, slap some Bolan stomp + warble on there... practically writes itself

You hurt me deeply. You hurt me deeply in my heart. (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 21:09 (fourteen years ago)

some of these are debatable maybe, "rocks" is more stones maybe

brio, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 21:14 (fourteen years ago)

but I do like how Bolan means different things to different people. He's like the bible.

Devendra Banhart OTM.

Grant Lee Phillips - Johnny Guitar

The first time I heard it I thought it was a rare T. Rex song I'd never heard before.
Can't find any youtube for it but here's in hypem:

I even dare all of you to find another song that rips off his music and voice as much as that one.

Moka, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 22:06 (fourteen years ago)

Actually there has been some great examples so far. I love this thread... I'm making myself a mix with all of these.

Anyone else hear a little bit of T. Rex in Destroyer every now and then?

Moka, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 22:08 (fourteen years ago)

Even moreso than 'i feel like a child' pretty muchall of Devendra Banhart's style was ripped off 'My People were fair and had sky in their hair'

billy idol's "rock the cradle of love" seems to be emulating his style at least, if not a particular track.

JAMC's "Blues from a Gun" is a pretty straight rip from C20th Boy
There's a Lloyd Cole song on his second album which quotes "Me I flunk, I don't care, I ain't no square with my corkscrew hair" (sorry for vagueness)
Cornershop's "Brimful of Asha" mentions Bolan Boogie

wikipedia says bolan based "get it on" on "little queenie", and he does say "meanwhile I'm still thinkin..."

but I don't quite hear it. I mean of course you can hear a lot of chuck berry in t. rex in general, but not sure I can hear "little queenie" specifically. might just be me being tonedeaf.

Mick Taylor told one of the guys in Slade that they were the ones getting ripped off in this song, but it sounds like a fair amount of "Get It On" sneaked in too:

Nick Gilder did this a lot in the late '70s; so did Willie Alexander and the Boom Boom Band, on their s/t album from 1978.

Also, if it hasn't been mentioned, Girlschool did a great cover of "20th Century Boy."

Opal's entire Happy Nightmare baby album wallows in electric T-Rex worship to great effect. Even Mazzy Star has a bit of that sound left in them.

sleeve, Friday, 11 March 2011 02:54 (fourteen years ago)

These two songs appeared at the same time, and the authors accused each other of ripping off each other. But both were of course heavily influenced by their contemporary glam rival T.Rex:
