Mainly Wanting to Listen to Lisa Gerrard At Least Once A Day, Classic or Classic

Our other Lisa Gerrard thread is a fucking bummer. So I'm starting the Lisa Gerrard thread of love and goth positivity. For me she is one of those artists about whom I'd contend that the albums are different from one another, I mean honestly I could point out how they differ, but who'm I kidding, if her name's on it I'm going to like it, I think her groove is just tremendous. Slightly more energy & motion than the droney synthy new age that scratches roughly the same itch, slightly less than hypnotic early trance stuff that hits the same spot but encourages motion rather than stillness. Who here likes Lisa fucking Gerrard, whose tranquil and contemplative music fuckin kicks ass. Raise your damn hands.

I have The Mirror Pool and Duality which I dig very much indeed, I've been hesitant with the other collabarations she's done. I guess I'm missing out.
When I listen to Lisa solo or DCD I always wonder why I don't put them on more often.

Super glad I managed to see DCD one time, it was really something.

You sum it up perfectly.

was Immortal Memory a film score? that was my first exposure to her stuff oddly enough (I hated the name Dead Can Dance so much that I never gave them a shot, and plus the Anglo-goth vibe was the opposite of my west coast goth feel, I was territorial death rock til I die at that time. lol & then that shit just completely took over the west coast), when aerosmith signed to Capitol I got it as a promo and I was like whoa fuck this is GREAT! and I'm pretty sure I had some DCD but damned if I can lay hands to it & I'm so satisfied with the solo stuff that I'm like, this is really all I need

It'd be interesting to see how you relate to a record like The Serpent's Egg, I think.

i love pretty much all DCD records, from the early stark post-punk of s/t album up through the glorious operatic goth-scapes of Aion, The Serpent's Egg, etc., the live album's great too... as for Lisa solo i've heard The Mirror Pool (fucking gorgeous) but not any others except in passing. would expect them all to be good though. what's next to hear?

I mean the one thing in what she does that's weird to me, like it strikes me as a "problem" but then it's so clearly part of what she does (and Gira/Angels of Light have exactly this "problem" too) is that the melodies are usually not melodies, really, not exactly; they don't seem to be developing/"going" anywhere, but they feel like they are, because they move so slowly. They sort of give the illusion of very slow movement. But they're more like A Thing She Does; they don't vary that much from piece to piece. She does a kind of cantor thing within very slow chord/base changes, and she drapes it over different, big structures. As it happens, I love all that; it occupies a different space from proper "songs" for me, and while it wakes up my sort of fascist 5-year-old Hongroid tendencies, it then engages me in broader thoughts about the function of music in my life, how I relate to it, what it means to make music, etc. These are pleasant thoughts to have in the course of my day! So what I'm saying is I'm gonna buy the Serpent's Egg

"Sanvean" might well knock you flat from that one. Sure did for me, from the first hearing on the DVD concert film.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 10 March 2011 21:20 (fourteen years ago)

Ned, is the DVD version the same as CD version on Toward the Within (if so YES IT IS AWESOME), or do i need to seek out the DVD separately?

one problem w/the black opal though is an "all along the watchtower" cover - not good

The way you describe Lisa's 'thing' John is pretty much how I feel about like Bjork, she glides over the music in a slightly disconnected fashion, like you take a vocal and put it on almost any other track and there's a strong chance it would also work.

Oh man aero if I'm reading you right and you don't have any of the DCD you really need to get a few of them! Serpent's Egg is fantastic but I don't have anything bad to say about any of the albums past the very first one, and even that one may appeal to you if you treat it the same way you'd treat, say, the first Cocteaus album: the necessary gothy starting point that branched into something more unique.

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 10 March 2011 22:00 (fourteen years ago)

I mean, I feel so strongly about this that if you say you're not going to get them I may just buy copies for you and force them on you when I attend your next stadium gig.

i like the first one best ;_;

FWIW Jim I don't dislike it at all, I just never found it as glorious at the others. But I can certainly see why someone might like it best!

seven years pass...

I had no idea she recorded an album with Mystère des Voix Bulgares until I heard her interview on Mike Watt's podcast

She's got a new album with percussionist David Kuckhermann called Hiraeth as well, nice if you are somewhat disappointed with her minimal presence on the new Dead Can Dance album.

Also El Niño de la Luna just came out on Blu-Ray, with an "isolated score" that is really just the audio from parts of the film that have music but interesting since it was never released before now. Also the film is bonkers and fun, especially if your image of Lisa Gerrard was of some ethereal enchantress... she plays a member of a psychic cult who is an alcoholic halfwit (with a kind heart) and spends a lot of time rolling around on the floor, chugging whiskey, vomiting, passing out on camels, etc. Also a very graphic and upsetting ritual sex scene.
