She certainly doesn't DISLIKE it, and always enjoys when I play Waka/E40/RocMarci around the house, but if she's gonna put on a record it's usually gonna be Oneida or afrobeat or Mulatu Astatke or Arthur Russell

my wife likes all OutKast, all Missy Elliott, Kanye and Jay-Z's bigger hits, and some UGK (though when she forgets their name, she calls them "that Southern rap duo that's not as good as OutKast")

My wife likes more rap than I do. Mostly random songs. She listens to a lot of KDAY and finds things she likes. She asked me to track down Mack 10 Foe Life: The Best of Mack 10. Very unlikely I would have sought that out on my own.

I also get to hear a lot of lil jon "yay-yuh!"s & that 50cent line about "come give me a hug". her taste is p broad & a little mysterious to me though, even though rap is one of the things we overlap on most. theres maybe a slight emphasis on big glossy party rap - tinchy/jay z/kid cudi/dizzee/kanye - but she's got a lot of classic 80s-00s albums too. likes a lot of rnb too & is prob as big a dream fan as anyone on ilx. eh, that's v incomplete, I can't dissect it really, she just has great taste & is a babe.

lex was directly referring to the 'assumptions' implied by the premise of the thread, though. obviously most of the posters itt are male, and more broadly rap fans on this board (and arguably in general) are largely male, but the thread isn't explicitly based on any kind of exclusion of anyone else.

― gawka flocka flamewar (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 11 March 2011 20:26 (fifteen years ago)
I do think, though, that getting onto deej for discussing listener demographics at this point is akin to getting onto Ned for not holding lyrics as a primary motivator behind liking a song or getting onto me for being impressed with technical precision in singers; we've all been around here long enough to have a handle on many posters' perspectives/value hierarchies wrt music, so can we take a bunch of that stuff as given and not devolve into meta conversations about "why do you think this way?" unless that's the topic of the thread?
― ancient, but very sexy (DJP), Friday, 11 March 2011 20:26 (fifteen years ago)

Rap CDs my gf owns: The Pharcyde, Atmosphere, um Lauryn Hill.
I left a copy of the Blueprint in her car and she played it a lot for a while. She put Lil' Wayne's Ms. Officer on a mix that was otherwise straight r&b and electro pop iirc.
Tolerates smooth yet gangsta Bay stuff I play at home.
Hates Waka. Hates Gucci. If I ever give her crap about something she's playing, she comes back with, "Dude, you listen to a guy with a fucking ice cream cone tattooed on his face."
