Threw on the studio albums, collaborative singles, compilations minus the tribute album and Faust/So Far compilation (two albums in one) and wasn't sure about any of the live albums, so left them off. If you like a Faust live album, let's hear about it.

Ehhh you probably should have left off "The Wumme Years" since it's pretty much all their best material sans IV

frogbs, Friday, 11 March 2011 17:11 (fourteen years ago)

hmmm I am v fond of their collage efforts, so tapes > debut/IV (close) > so far

ogmor, Friday, 11 March 2011 17:14 (fourteen years ago)

Tapes!

ka£ka (NickB), Friday, 11 March 2011 17:15 (fourteen years ago)

Nick i haven't picked up Tapes yet b/c i've seen like three different CD versions w/ various cover art, am scared i'll get the wrong one. is there a definitive issue i should look for?

thank you ilxor for starting this much needed thread (ilxor), Friday, 11 March 2011 17:16 (fourteen years ago)

i think they are all the same, some broken into tracks and some with just one track for each side

frogbs, Friday, 11 March 2011 17:18 (fourteen years ago)

'Tapes' for absolutely silencing my parents over xmas dinner in '74 when my mother suggested 'put on some of your music, dear' .....

....I actually thought they'd mind it less than Roxy or Bowie....

I don't know the answer to this, I've only got the original vinyl. But ReR are usually pretty dependable for quality product imo.

ka£ka (NickB), Friday, 11 March 2011 17:27 (fourteen years ago)

ah okay cool. whatever

not sure what to vote for here tbh, i like several of these a lot (Faust, So Far, IV, You Know, Rien...)

thank you ilxor for starting this much needed thread (ilxor), Friday, 11 March 2011 17:40 (fourteen years ago)

torn between Tapes and IV, but will always have a soft spot for 71 Minutes

Dominique, Friday, 11 March 2011 17:40 (fourteen years ago)

71 Minutes was my intro to Faust and I like it a lot, as well.
Had to vote So Far, though.

Trip Maker, Friday, 11 March 2011 18:19 (fourteen years ago)

So Far by a nose, the nose being "...In The Spirit," which is ruling for me today for some reason.

bentelec, Saturday, 12 March 2011 01:59 (fourteen years ago)

1st one for me. that 1st side is just magic. they're coming out to australia in june (for one concert!) so will be finally able to see them.

nonightsweats, Saturday, 12 March 2011 03:15 (fourteen years ago)

Faust IV is probably my favorite album by any krautrock band, period. It's flawless.

scott pgwp (pgwp), Saturday, 12 March 2011 18:08 (fourteen years ago)

This probably belongs here more...

Interesting stuff regarding Faust IV, particularly as JCope's book had it that people were massively disappointed by it when it came out.

I've tried to understand this and came up with :

The previous album cost 49p, and had lots of snippetty ideas and a few more complete songs, whereas IV starts with 11 mins of strummy noise, then some songs and ideas, a not terribly pre-posessing sleeve and a white inner sleeve.

Moral: Never do something cut-price, then expect yr customers to pay top whack next time.

Is a vote for Wumme Years basically just a vote saying you can't chose and you don't think it is IV?

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Sunday, 13 March 2011 00:19 (fourteen years ago)

exactly...dont vote that one

frogbs, Monday, 14 March 2011 14:31 (fourteen years ago)

Tapes = So Far > IV > 1st

First one I heard was "So Far". Also great are "Munic and Elsewhere" / "71 Minutes"... well, basically anything by the original band is unbeatable.

I like "You Know FaUSt" best of the later stuff (that I've heard).

Tom D (Tom D.), Wednesday, 16 March 2011 11:32 (fourteen years ago)

I want to vote for "Wumme Years", as I got it for £2 at a CD/DVD shop in Basingstoke.

Mark G, Wednesday, 16 March 2011 11:36 (fourteen years ago)

Can just imagine you saying that: standing up, puffing out your chest and sticking your thumbs in your lapels

Tom D (Tom D.), Wednesday, 16 March 2011 11:42 (fourteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

I really need to discover this band more than I actually have so far

Hear, hear - especially when the drums come in.

Davek (davek_00), Sunday, 20 March 2011 18:59 (fourteen years ago)

I voted IV although there's at least one brilliant song/moment on everything here.

Davek (davek_00), Sunday, 20 March 2011 19:01 (fourteen years ago)

second and third song on the first one are both indispensable to a well-rounded life

I may be wrong but I think his name is Husher (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 20 March 2011 23:16 (fourteen years ago)

I always feel like Each One Teach One is equal parts Faust IV and Easter Everywhere

voted So Far

wow only three votes for the 1st album

I may be wrong but I think his name is Husher (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 21 March 2011 02:08 (fourteen years ago)

As usual, I miss this poll entirely and thus deprive an album of a more exalted standing - in this case, denying So Far a tie for 2nd place.

Absolutely, I was playing devil's advocaat there..

I thought it great on the first play, but was trying to rationalise why it was perceived as such a massive letdown at the time.

Mark G, Monday, 21 March 2011 09:56 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah I'm surprised that Tapes got 10 while the s/t only got 3. The s/t is way better, IMO...

frogbs, Monday, 21 March 2011 13:30 (fourteen years ago)

Think the rehabilitation of "IV" more than complete, prolly needs to be knocked down again now

Tom D (Tom D.), Monday, 21 March 2011 13:34 (fourteen years ago)

IV was the only one that remained in print throughout the 90s when Faust became hip again.

taco al pastorius (Steve Shasta), Monday, 21 March 2011 14:10 (fourteen years ago)

Beyond the opening track, I don't think it's as good as their earlier albums. Opening track is, uh, pretty good!

Tom D (Tom D.), Monday, 21 March 2011 14:14 (fourteen years ago)

eight years pass...

“tapes” sounds AMAZING right now, such a weird and silly and deeply beautiful labyrinth of fragments blossoming into epiphanies

budo jeru, Friday, 20 March 2020 19:19 (five years ago)

that scream at the end of "No Harm" is one of my favorite things ever

frogbs, Friday, 20 March 2020 20:56 (five years ago)

I ended up with three copies of the polydor "So Far" single.

One was a perfectly serviceable vg copy

One a mint lovely one I found at a bargain price

And one a rotten mispress with chunks and divots on side a, side b is perfect. But, it was cheap.

That's not counting a recent reissue which is a different mix/version.

Mark G, Saturday, 21 March 2020 09:11 (five years ago)

Wow, no votes back then for 71 Minutes? That's a heaping helping of primo Faust.

InternationalWaters, Saturday, 21 March 2020 15:15 (five years ago)

^ would be my choice as well.
