Omnipotent Program Director Scenario

As an adjunct to the GROOO thread...
Picture that you are a newly hired 'program director' at a the most annoying radio station in your town. Lets pretend this radio station is on its last legs and you have been given absolute power to remake the station in your own image. How would you fix this hypothetical radio wasteland?
What would you play? What would you not play? Who would you invite to play live?
Which songs would you (semi- or permanently) retire from the playlist?
Would you create a strict playlist of your personal faves and enforce it with an iron fist....or would you give your DJ a massive amount of autonomy?
Would you play the uncut versions or do you think its okay to censor?
etc etc etc etc.

I would handpick the DJs and let them play whatever they wanted. We would go out of business in a week, and I would be so proud.

Yeh, what's the point? Are you trying to succeed or are you trying to enlighten the masses with your stunning good taste? The two are mutually exclusive.

teeny is spot on. You want to succeed, you spot the niche in the market, the territory where the existing radio stations serving the area aren't cutting it, aren't suiting some audience: if I were up to judging something like this (and we middle aged men have our fingers on the pulse - I'm putting my money on romo), I might make money but have little fun. In a fantasy world, fuck that, I play loads of what I want and hire all my friends who have musical taste that I respect and let them do what they want, and we go out of business.

no, you do it the way they did it on fm in the 70's. You give your Dj a playlist, and in that playlist you give him hourly wildcard slots of his own choosing. You hand pick dj's that have their finger on the pulse (whatever that means...) and tell them to find the best stuff in the format.

It is the best of both worlds. You still get the populist records that the audience wants, and you get to throw a few tracks from leftfield in the mix every so often. The only thing is that you cannot play 6 booty rap tracks and then finish with edgar varese at the end of the hour...
