Critical response
Simon Vozick-Levinson of Entertainment Weekly praised the song's catchiness, but felt it failed to meet the standards of previous singles "Boom Boom Pow" and "I Gotta Feeling".[9] Franke Previte, who won an Academy Award for co-writing "(I've Had) The Time of My Life", complimented The Black Eyed Peas' sample usage, saying, "It just reconfirms to me that the song is cross-generational. The song has now crossed over to the next generation in a huge way."[10] Willa Paskin of New York, however, criticized the choice of sample and was disappointed with the chorus, feeling it was "shoehorned into the rest of the song".[7] Todd Martens of the Los Angeles Times called "The Time (Dirty Bit)" "the most assertive party song of the year".[11] Digital Spy's Nick Levine gave a review of three stars out of five, disliking the many elements that constituted the song.[12] The Independent's Simon Price also criticized the sampling on the track, calling it a low quality attempt to satisfy listeners.[13]

Don't know about anyone else, but feel like I would appreciate a nakhchivan 'tracks better than (x)' thread (where x is something liked and not just another lol target) a lot more.

I concur, simply cuz I have nothing to contribute worse than the first track.

sort of wanted to do a thread about that song, and how it's really atrocious in certain respects but has redeeming facets such as the (alas too short) acid synth coda

then in the end i just thought lol will.i.am and did another slightly tired lol thread

I would actually tend to think "I've Had The Time Of My Life" is worse. But then, part of the problem about "The Time (Dirty Bit)" is of course its very kitchy source.

i saw a TV ad for Sandals resorts which featured a version of "The Time Of My Life" which basically sounded like an offbrand pastiche of "I Gotta Feeling" -- it was actually worst than "The Time (Dirty Bit)" but i am curious if they were biting that or if it came first and possibly even inspired will.i.am

I love the concept of this thread so much.

Spo-Dee-O-Dee-Dopaliscious! (The Reverend), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 19:37 (fourteen years ago)

I still maintain that the parts of "The Time (Dirty Bit)" that aren't from "Dirty Dancing" are surprisingly avant garde clubby for a top 40 hit

low-rent black gangster nicknamed Bootsy (DJP), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 19:39 (fourteen years ago)

i don't know, EVERYTHING on the radio is so squelchy and glitchy now, at some point it loses any novelty or artiness. if anything the tempo change at the end of "Just Can't Get Enough" is more avant garde clubby.

Shippie_Ipley_Dope (some dude), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 19:42 (fourteen years ago)

If you stripped out the vocal lines, you could probably convince ppl that "The Time (Dirty Bit)" was a lost Richie Hawtin track; I can't think of another mainstream hit that you could do that with.

low-rent black gangster nicknamed Bootsy (DJP), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 19:44 (fourteen years ago)

"we r who we r"?

Shippie_Ipley_Dope (some dude), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 19:45 (fourteen years ago)

... maybe? You could pass that one off as a weak Speedy J ripoff maybe, but there is a very strong commercial house vibe to that even in the way that the main synth line is an easily-digestible melody that really isn't present in the verse music for "TT(DB)"

low-rent black gangster nicknamed Bootsy (DJP), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 19:46 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i'm out of my depth here, just throwing out a guess, i kinda see what you mean but i still think it's a very slight outlier in a pretty ubiquitous trend

Shippie_Ipley_Dope (some dude), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 19:48 (fourteen years ago)

My argument is that the song is an outlier! I don't disagree with the idea that music that normally would have been solely club music is now all over the mainstream; I'm saying that I'm surprised BEP got away with going THAT clubby.
