Best Hip-Hop/Rap Album Included on Pitchfork's Top Albums Lists (2001-08)

Stankonia, The Blueprint, Supreme Clientele, Miss E...So Addictive, The Marshall Mathers LP, Lord Willin'... all of these were ignored by Pitchfork's year-end lists on release, then retroactively added to the half-decade and decade lists... so they're not included here. That said, obvious front-runner is Kanye, I guess, but this should be interesting. Surely there are better albums here than The College Dropout/Late Registration, right? Let's dig 'em out, ILM... don't let me down.

lex pretend, Sunday, 13 March 2011 23:20 (fourteen years ago)

its not really that weird, 'let's get it' is his breakthrough

deej, Sunday, 13 March 2011 23:24 (fourteen years ago)

isn't the point of a breakthrough that the stuff that comes after it also gets recognised?

lex pretend, Sunday, 13 March 2011 23:29 (fourteen years ago)

lost his trendy hipster cachet by that point iirc

What is the point of this?

have you ever seen an ilx poll? it's about as pointless/unpointless as pretty much any other poll going. anyway- read the intro text, why don't you? bunch of hip-hop albums picked out by a site not renowned for its hip-hop knowledge, leaving out lots of bona-fide 'classics' etc. etc.

Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein [Def Jux; 2001]
Dälek - From Filthy Tongue of Gods and Griots [Ipecac; 2001]
Blackalicious - Blazing Arrow [MCA; 2002]

feel like a pretty huge pitchdork right about now for having and loving all three of these albums...
well, 'love' maybe too strong for the blackalicious, which is like 30% longer than it needs to be, but still really good. dalek album was the first thing i heard by them and it totally kicks ass, but i think i prefer their next few. fuckit, i'm voting can-oh.

hipsters be comin' to the hipster-hop store (bernard snowy), Monday, 14 March 2011 01:08 (fourteen years ago)

try as I might, I could never get into that Blackalicious outside of a few songs. that was around the same time I was in my major The Coup listening phase tho

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 March 2011 01:33 (fourteen years ago)

excuse me, three lil wayne albums

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 March 2011 01:34 (fourteen years ago)

'run the road' was DEFINITELY a better 2005 rap album

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 March 2011 01:36 (fourteen years ago)

anyway

1. college dropout
2. king
3. we got it 4 cheap
4. purple haze
5. dedication 2

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 March 2011 01:37 (fourteen years ago)

carter 2 would easily be my fav if it was here, was the first thing i looked for

ciderpress, Monday, 14 March 2011 01:38 (fourteen years ago)

i don't care about any album on this list up until college dropout

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 March 2011 01:38 (fourteen years ago)

8 albums from 2003 but no 50 cent

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 March 2011 01:39 (fourteen years ago)

a quick glance at the list myself (didn't really think abt my favs when compiling) and the frontrunner is El-P - Fantastic Damage [Def Jux; 2002] but i'll give it a bit more thought & replay some stuff b4 i vote

Does no-one like clipse on ilm?

prego, Friday, 2 September 2011 18:17 (fourteen years ago)

i used to be one of the biggest clipse stans! then i got over it. but to say HHNF is better than

T.I. - King
Kanye West - The College Dropout
Ghostface - The Pretty Toney Album
Cam'ron - Purple Haze
Beanie Sigel - The B.Coming
Young Jeezy - Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101
DJ Drama & Lil Wayne - Dedication 2
Clipse - We Got It 4 Cheap, Vol. 2
Various Artists - Run the Road
Kanye West - Late Registration
J Dilla - Donuts
Jay-Z - The Black Album
Lil Wayne - Da Drought 3
Missy Elliott - Under Construction
Madvillain - Madvillainy

is a helluva statement imo

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 2 September 2011 18:22 (fourteen years ago)

lf 'lord willin' was on this list it would be up there for me w/ college dropout

their shtick was way tired by the time HHNF dropped, and i don't think it's a coincidence that they haven't dropped one thing of consequence since that album. the decline started w/ that album.

J0rdan S., Friday, 2 September 2011 18:26 (fourteen years ago)

woah, for me HHNF is like top 5 of the 00's. Of that list you just gave, only late registration, pretty toney and dedication 2 come close. But tbf ive not even listened to half of these these records fully through. Like is TI's King really that good? I've only heard what you know and front back, which are both tunes, but never listened to the full album. Is it worth downloading?

prego, Friday, 2 September 2011 18:34 (fourteen years ago)

Also some weird choices, pretty toney over fishscale and supreme clientele? Dedication over tha carter 2?

prego, Friday, 2 September 2011 18:35 (fourteen years ago)

i didn't post that list

J0rdan S., Friday, 2 September 2011 18:37 (fourteen years ago)

and yes, "king" is worth downloading

"pretty toney over fishscale and supreme clientele?"

Without a doubt.

Supreme is close but Pretty Toney is way better than Fishscale.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Friday, 2 September 2011 18:58 (fourteen years ago)

Supreme is close but Pretty Toney is way better than Fishscale.
I still don't understand this line of thinking. Of his first five albums, Pretty Toney is easily his weakest IMO. Fishscale might not be the best collection of beats of his career, but rhymewise it's his peak.

Ironman thru Bulletproof = thesis
Pretty Toney = (transitional album) antithesis
Fishscale = (near-perfect) synthesis

"but rhymewise it's his peak."

This doesn't really concern me much. Overall vibe/energy/soul/fun of Pretty Toney > his other releases

I like the sample choices better as well, feels like a soul album more than a rap album.

i also prefer toney to fishscale, but fishscale had the best single: "back like that"

anyways here is my super alt top ten list. didn't realize my taste in hiphop was so WILD BEASTS

1. donuts (how did this get NO love?)
2. run the road
3. cold vein
4. grand don't come for free
5. madvillainy
6. got it 4 cheap 2
7. pretty toney
8. let's get it (i actually prefer inspiration tops out of the jeezy LPs tho)
9. 808s
10. rjd2, lol

also would have voted the unseen above madvillainy if it made the list

fennel cartwright, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 23:51 (fourteen years ago)

i rep for 'back like that' too actually

1. donuts (how did this get NO love?)

not having rapping iirc

D-40, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 23:55 (fourteen years ago)

Of the albums on this list I've heard, HHNF is the most consistent by a long shot. Generally speaking I've got backpack-ass tastes in hip hop, though, so I probably can't be trusted.
