Does a.m.a count?

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 14 March 2011 03:51 (fourteen years ago)

Actually, yeah, but took me a while to process it. Seriously I think Ned is mentioned in the first 10 pages of the 33 1/3 write-up on Loveless.

yeah (kelpolaris), Monday, 14 March 2011 03:51 (fourteen years ago)

and honestly I can't remember why, save for that he proclaimed himself "King of the ILM Boards" which kinda seems irrelevant to, you know, Kevin Shields and all

yeah (kelpolaris), Monday, 14 March 2011 03:52 (fourteen years ago)

i had read a bunch of Ned's allmusic reviews that first summer back from college when i was forming my ~~college canon~~

Considered by experts as the youngest philosopher in the world (nakhchivan), Monday, 14 March 2011 04:50 (fourteen years ago)

this question is pretty much 'what did you find first, allmusic or ilx,' isn't it?

although i'm sure i looked at amg before i found ilm in 2001, i definitely wasn't cognizant of the bylines enough by that point to recognize ned's name from anywhere when i saw his posts here

some dude, Monday, 14 March 2011 04:55 (fourteen years ago)

saw him on Captain Kangaroo in 1971; haven't looked back since.

administratieve blunder (unregistered), Monday, 14 March 2011 04:59 (fourteen years ago)

There was this person who was putting together a Boo Radleys' collection of all the a and b sides of their singles.

I was able to furnish him with copies of the tracks from their final single, which remains unreleased.

And so, by exchange, I got a copy of the compilation when it was done.

Ned was his name.

Some years later, I came across this place via Freaky Trigger, liked it, stayed. Eventually saw Ned's name and remembered it....

Mark G, Monday, 14 March 2011 09:11 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, because he wrote for careless talk costs lives, which is how i got to hear about ilx in the first place

lex pretend, Monday, 14 March 2011 09:17 (fourteen years ago)

nope. seems i am in a minority here.

mark e, Monday, 14 March 2011 09:19 (fourteen years ago)

back in 2001-2002, every review I looked up on AMG seemed to have been written by this Raggett character.

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Monday, 14 March 2011 09:24 (fourteen years ago)

"yes, we may be hidden by Raggetts..."

Mark G, Monday, 14 March 2011 09:29 (fourteen years ago)

No. I'm not sure if I came across Allmusic.com before ILX, but I don't pay attention to writer names there (or on other music sites). I probably wouldn't have known about this connection unless it hadn't been mentioned on ILM. Ned is the only Allmusic writer I can name, now.

Tuomas, Monday, 14 March 2011 09:58 (fourteen years ago)

AllNed, morelike...

Mark G, Monday, 14 March 2011 10:03 (fourteen years ago)

no but always 'hear' of Ned when i can't read ilx, because you google Ned Raggett when the site is down. (and then regret not reading his blog more often)

Ludo, Monday, 14 March 2011 10:20 (fourteen years ago)

I originally got into him through his early work with the Almanac. Then AMG, then ilx.

Fetchboy, Monday, 14 March 2011 10:33 (fourteen years ago)

Tuomas, Monday, 14 March 2011 11:53 (fourteen years ago)

The alt.music.alternative Usenet discussion group that was one of the seed locations for the ILM posting community (the other being a Belle & Sebastian mailing list).

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Monday, 14 March 2011 12:03 (fourteen years ago)

Oh. I thought ILM was born out of a Freaky Trigger message board or something?

I'm vaguely aware of the idea of "Usenet groups", but I've never actually seen one. They were like old school message boards, right?

Amazing.

To answer the q, yes

van smack, Monday, 14 March 2011 12:47 (fourteen years ago)

I'm going to say no. It's possible that I'd noticed his byline on an AMG review, but if so, I didn't remember that when I came here.

Joseph Beuys II Men (jaymc), Monday, 14 March 2011 13:13 (fourteen years ago)

I may have even seen Ned's byline when AllMusic still published a paperback in the late nineties.

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 14 March 2011 13:14 (fourteen years ago)

I only visited FT for the Am I Cool or Not feature, which I think I recall Ned participating in. I also remember reading his Top 100(?) of the '90s before ILM.

BLOOMPS 2012 (rip van wanko), Monday, 14 March 2011 13:17 (fourteen years ago)

xxp (On the other hand, I probably would've recognized the name "Stephen Thomas Erlewine" if he posted on ILM.)

Joseph Beuys II Men (jaymc), Monday, 14 March 2011 13:17 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah I found Freakytrigger before I found ILM, and Ned was pretty prominent there at the time.

Matt DC, Monday, 14 March 2011 13:19 (fourteen years ago)

No. The only names I recognised here were Sinker, Momus and ET, plus about 3 or 4 people from the DroneOn mailing list.

ka£ka (NickB), Monday, 14 March 2011 13:26 (fourteen years ago)

Oh. I thought ILM was born out of a Freaky Trigger message board or something?

ILM was Freaky Trigger's message board. The original posting community (as well as contributing community to Freaky Trigger) had a large representation of a.m.a and Sinister people.

ancient, but very sexy (DJP), Monday, 14 March 2011 13:31 (fourteen years ago)

I may have even seen Ned's byline when AllMusic still published a paperback in the late nineties.

Yep, I'm in a couple of those editions.

yes. back when AMG was the go-to source iirc it was always ned or ank3ny writing about my favorite bands.

Tuomas, Monday, 14 March 2011 23:10 (fourteen years ago)

I like it when I'm browsing at Barnes & Noble and sampling something on their in-store listening stations and it pops up with a Ned review (since they seem to be very tied in with AllMusic).

― 'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, March 14, 2011 3:30 PM (2 hours ago) Bookmark

Oh, way cool! Yeah back in those pre-itunes for Windows days I'd venture to Barnes w/ sole intent of just listening to music and reading about bands I wanted to know more about (also when I was on a 56k connection and doing this sort of stuff on the internet was more a waste of time than anything). Shit, this is the most nostalgic I've felt in a long time.

[i]...and it's all thanks to Ned.[/q] Well not really. But I'm sure somewhere along the line I read at least one Ned's articles. I'm tempted to say "small world" but I think it'd necessitate gagging.

plax (ico), Wednesday, 16 March 2011 01:36 (fourteen years ago)

If I'm not mistaken I first encountered Mr Raggett on the MBV-list c.1997, so that's a further 'yes'. If I'd read some AMG content prior to that then I apparently wasn't conscious of the author.

"Bootyflakes -- Classic or Ned Raggett?"

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 16 March 2011 14:10 (fourteen years ago)

First time I ever realized that Ned existed away from ILX was when I was reading a review of the Drop Nineteens' Delaware. I was looking at the cover, thinking, "I could've swore she was holding a gun, but it's been a few years." Then I saw the Raggett byline and had one of those moments where I thought reality was shapeshifting on me.

Now a GIS shows nothing but the gun version of Delaware. I could've swore they took that out.

Ned Raggett Vs. Minnesota

what do it take to be a legend like noz is? (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 16 March 2011 19:10 (fourteen years ago)

It was back in '02 when times were hard
He had a MBV 45rpm and a deck of cards
Ned Raggett
He wore rat-drawn shoes and a Kid A promotional hat
Had a complete set of Melody Makers from the 90s and had payments on that
Ned Raggett
His woman threw him out in the ice and snow
And told him, "I'm sick of you banging on about AnCo"
Ned Raggett
So he walked through the rain and he walked through the sea
Till he came to a place called The AMG
Ned Raggett
He said "Mr Motherfucker, you know who I am"
The Editor said, "No, and I don't give a good goddamn"
To Ned Raggett
He said, "Well Editor, it's plain at that
I'm that bad motherfucker called Ned Raggat...

Needs some work...

Chap With Wings... Five Rounds Rapid (Doran), Wednesday, 16 March 2011 19:23 (fourteen years ago)

Has a definite something, though. And if Blixa and Mick were doing the backing, then hey.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 16 March 2011 20:34 (fourteen years ago)

Also to Pleasant Plains -- yeah, the gun version was the first, then they caved and went to the non-gun version, and now they obviously don't care. Rightly.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 16 March 2011 20:34 (fourteen years ago)

No. Sorry Ned.

Not too long ago I lost all my links to ILM and for some reason it didn't google.

I found my way back home by googling Ned Raggett

NEW BOARD DESCRIPTION!!!

Mark G, Thursday, 17 March 2011 07:43 (fourteen years ago)

Pretty sure I would have noticed the name in AMG independent of ama, even though most of my favourite music is reviewed on AMG not by Ned but by Stephen Thomas Erlewine.

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 17 March 2011 11:39 (fourteen years ago)

I spent so much of my freshman year at college on allmusic, and he was everywhere I looked. In the expected places (MBV and cool post-punk stuff all that),sure, but I then realized he was also reviewing (and digging) all the shitty, uncool stuff I love and so I became a fan.

CharlieS, Thursday, 17 March 2011 14:09 (fourteen years ago)

Hahah dare I ask what all that stuff exactly was.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 17 March 2011 14:11 (fourteen years ago)

haha iirc (almost ten years ago, now) it was lots of ethereal style goth, death metal, etc. Lots of it definitely NOT at all actually shitty (plenty of people will rep for it these days but not so much back then) and you how it is freshman year. in any case, not the stuff the older folks at the radio station were talking about!

CharlieS, Thursday, 17 March 2011 14:20 (fourteen years ago)

Hahah well everything comes around. Sometimes it's just all about timing.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 17 March 2011 14:22 (fourteen years ago)

Sometimes I'll buy a record and then look it up on Wikipedia and when I come to the reviews section I'll click on the allmusic link and think to myself "I hope Ned wrote this one." Happened tonight with Joy Division's Substance (and yes, Ned did write that one).

Mark, Saturday, 19 March 2011 01:18 (fourteen years ago)

Hey, thank ya -- that's quite the compliment!

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 19 March 2011 01:21 (fourteen years ago)

I also bought Ocean Rain and Boys Don't Cry (someone must have been selling their 80s LPs) but no dice with those ;-).

Mark, Saturday, 19 March 2011 01:23 (fourteen years ago)

Hahah. Did Andy K do those, I can't remember...

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 19 March 2011 01:29 (fourteen years ago)

Jason Ankeny and Chris True-- both too short unfortunately!

Mark, Saturday, 19 March 2011 01:31 (fourteen years ago)

I used to read All Music Guide a lot around '93 on Gopher. Anyone remember that? Seems like everything I read about was reviewed by Cub Koda. lol Didn't know about Ned until coming here though.

wk, Saturday, 19 March 2011 03:52 (fourteen years ago)
