Sing For The Moment

dead perez (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 14 March 2011 04:11 (fourteen years ago)

There are so many awful songs on here, but I think it comes down to "Drips" or "Sing for the Moment".

'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 14 March 2011 04:11 (fourteen years ago)

most of these are really bad on first recollection. its been YEARS since i heard this shit, may have to pull up youtubes for a quick listen b4 i vote

one of my roomates, an eminem stan, cites "sing for the moment" as his favorite eminem song. i make fun of him for this constantly but it's not the worst song on this album

kl0p's son (k3vin k.), Monday, 14 March 2011 04:13 (fourteen years ago)

yeah far from it. whiney why is that the worst, aside from absolutely terrorizing one of ilx's noted posters' biggest hit?

thank you ilxor for starting this much needed thread (ilxor), Monday, 14 March 2011 04:14 (fourteen years ago)

i haven't listened to this in years but i remember loving "cleanin out my closet" "soldier" "without me" and "til i collapse" up there with em's best

kl0p's son (k3vin k.), Monday, 14 March 2011 04:17 (fourteen years ago)

drips was dope iirc

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Monday, 14 March 2011 04:24 (fourteen years ago)

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Monday, 14 March 2011 04:24 (fourteen years ago)

i remember liking 'business' 'til i collapse'

def hated sing for the moment, terrible shit

deej, Monday, 14 March 2011 04:25 (fourteen years ago)

haha yeah 'til i collapse' is dope forgot nate dogg was on this

deej, Monday, 14 March 2011 04:26 (fourteen years ago)

Sing For The Moment is fucking Glee Rap, as Maura would say. Just histrionic, batterie dogshit

dead perez (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 14 March 2011 04:27 (fourteen years ago)

Bathetic, fucking autocorrect

dead perez (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 14 March 2011 04:27 (fourteen years ago)

deej, Monday, 14 March 2011 04:28 (fourteen years ago)

yeah no one is defending that one

20 songs minus 5 skits - 15 songs, 4-5 of which are classics, 7-8 other solid joints, couple on the edge and a couple trash songs. solid album whiney offtm

kl0p's son (k3vin k.), Monday, 14 March 2011 04:29 (fourteen years ago)

(the order of my list that its in)

deej, Monday, 14 March 2011 04:29 (fourteen years ago)

i only heard this album here and there in peoples' cars so i don't remember much about it beyond the singles (and "Hailie's Song," which for some awful got a decent amount of radio play) -- don't necessarily think "Cleanin' Out My Closet" is the worst but it's the only one i hate that i'm occasionally appalled to find some people consider it one of his best singles

some dude, Monday, 14 March 2011 04:31 (fourteen years ago)

haha i just remembered "My Dad's Gone Crazy," jesus

some dude, Monday, 14 March 2011 04:32 (fourteen years ago)

from the same sampler that gave us 'stimulate', def in my PO5 em songs, 50 goes in over the "til i collapse" beat

Hailie's Song. why the hell does he sing, christ.

"Soldier" is the best

hold my breathless i wish go dead (San Te), Monday, 14 March 2011 04:34 (fourteen years ago)

in like 20-30 years when i totally exhaust all the music by rappers i actually care about i will probably sit down with Eminem's first few albums and go hey "Business" and "Square Dance" are pretty dope

some dude, Monday, 14 March 2011 04:35 (fourteen years ago)

Say Goodbye to Hollywood has the most annoying chorus ever too

This was the first Eminem album that disappointed the living hell out of me

hold my breathless i wish go dead (San Te), Monday, 14 March 2011 04:36 (fourteen years ago)

like this has always been one of the most endearing/sympathetic things i've ever heard Eminem say, cause i'm like yeah dude i'd rate Redman way above you too

some dude, Monday, 14 March 2011 04:37 (fourteen years ago)

xpost it's like "hey I'm gonna take these uber bleak and self-misanthropic songs/lyrics, but I'm gonna get rid of all the humor I used to have and make this sound as melodramatic as possible btw my life is an event"

hold my breathless i wish go dead (San Te), Monday, 14 March 2011 04:37 (fourteen years ago)

but then again I liked Recovery based on the one listen so wtf do I know

hold my breathless i wish go dead (San Te), Monday, 14 March 2011 04:38 (fourteen years ago)

course all of you bitchin about Sing for the Moment musta really loved Toy Soldiers on the next album

hold my breathless i wish go dead (San Te), Monday, 14 March 2011 04:40 (fourteen years ago)

this was definitely the point where i was like 'hey if you love your daughter so much maybe we don't need to hear about her (or actually hear her) on every other fuckin song'

some dude, Monday, 14 March 2011 04:41 (fourteen years ago)

posts very much in character ahoy but what i always hated about "Sing For The Moment" was less the obviousness of the sample or the sentiment but the clumsiness of the production, worst fucking snare drum sound ever

some dude, Monday, 14 March 2011 04:42 (fourteen years ago)

ha im with you on that actually, although im not sure theres a way that sample could have been saved

deej, Monday, 14 March 2011 04:43 (fourteen years ago)

maybe by not sampling the entire fucking chorus for the chorus of em's own song?

thank you ilxor for starting this much needed thread (ilxor), Monday, 14 March 2011 04:49 (fourteen years ago)

em hollering SING IT or whatever on top of it is what makes that terrible though

i can't think ppl like shiplo rep for "without me"

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 March 2011 04:55 (fourteen years ago)

such a trash retread of "the real slim shady"

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 March 2011 04:55 (fourteen years ago)

it's slight and perfunctory as an Eminem lead single that deliberately echoed earlier Eminem lead singles, but as a song it's really quick and mean and funny and works for me better than the songs it's aping

some dude, Monday, 14 March 2011 04:57 (fourteen years ago)

I liked when Em did songs like "Rock Bottom" where you could feel his authentic anguish dripping through the track, with simple production, so as not to get in the way.

Then on Em show he begins increasing the melodrama to intolerable levels over overproduced beats that sound like they belong on the score for Cradle 2 the Grave.

hold my breathless i wish go dead (San Te), Monday, 14 March 2011 04:58 (fourteen years ago)

i know you said 'score' and not 'soundtrack' but the Cradle 2 The Grave OST had some jams, i remember getting it in a Def Jam promo pile, there was even an Em song on it!

some dude, Monday, 14 March 2011 05:01 (fourteen years ago)

also lots of Em productions are chintzy and dumb but only "Without Me" has ♪♫♪♫♪♫ SYNTH SAX ♪♫♪♫♪♫ to make it feel knowingly chintzy and dumb

nah i disagree w/ this too, i was expecting 'without me' to bump less than it did when it dropped to be honest but iirc the consensus from everyone i was talking w/ was that hed dropped a good single again

deej, Monday, 14 March 2011 05:21 (fourteen years ago)

& i agreed w/ that consensus

deej, Monday, 14 March 2011 05:21 (fourteen years ago)

even at the time it felt like a bad rehash & at this point in all of our lives it might as well not exist

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 March 2011 05:27 (fourteen years ago)

its really not that redundent, any more than 'real slim shady' is of his first big single

deej, Monday, 14 March 2011 05:32 (fourteen years ago)

except that "the real slim shady" made sense from the standpoint of being the first single off his first album after he had become a megastar, the whole conceit of the song seemed appropriate & was fresh & lyrically it was actually funny (i.e. the bit about carson daly/fred durst arguing over who got head from xtina first) and made a decent point or two ("tom green can hump a dead moose") & moreover it felt sorta rebellious

"without me" doesn't have that freshness in any regard & also the insults are pretty lame (dissing one of the guys from n sync in 2003?)

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 March 2011 05:36 (fourteen years ago)

The first time I heard Without Me on the radio it just felt like a workaday Eminem comedy track, I figured the album tracks would be more interesting.

Whereas the first time I heard The Real Slim Shady, I went and bought Slim Shady LP the next day, and then got Marshall Mathers LP the day it came out. Huge summer jam w/ massive impact, it was all over the place

hold my breathless i wish go dead (San Te), Monday, 14 March 2011 06:12 (fourteen years ago)

except that "the real slim shady" made sense from the standpoint of being the first single off his first album after he had become a megastar

Yeah, but what confused me was that this wasn't the first track on the album.

"Guess who's back, back again" um, presumably the same bloke that is on the other tracks before this one?

Mark G, Monday, 14 March 2011 11:36 (fourteen years ago)

Every song on this I've heard besides "Without Me" is terrible.

"My Dad Gone Crazy" is terrific!

Voted for "Drips" slightly over "Sing For the Moment" and "Superman." They sounded especially lame and halfhearted when released after "Lose Yourself."

yeah, the way they kept pushing especially shitty singles off the album well after the iconic non-LP soundtrack hit came and went made it feel like this stupid record would never go away

Oh god I haven't heard that song where he sings in like... well 9 years I guess.

I also started hating SPIN more after they said "Cleaning Out My Closet" was fucking the #1 song of 2002. Assholes.

billstevejim, Thursday, 24 March 2011 05:35 (fourteen years ago)

"The song where he sings" is "Hallie's Song" (I think).

billstevejim, Thursday, 24 March 2011 05:36 (fourteen years ago)

dunno which is worse:

- Here is yet more "profound, therapeutic, cathartic" bullshit about how my life sucked b/c of my trailer-trash mom
- Here is yet another sentimental jam in which I sing badly to/about my daughter
- this is the token Diddy-style 'big single' in which I liberally sample a popular rock song from a bygone era.
- juvenile fart jokes about poop and pee & maybe some unpleasant porno shit for good measure

^ imo this album is about half this & half decent tracks. My fave is 'Square Dance'

why can't I vote for like five songs here

ancient, but very sexy (DJP), Thursday, 24 March 2011 14:22 (fourteen years ago)

the most depressing part about this album campaign was how most mags hedged their bets with Marshall Mathers on some "it's great BUT.." giving it like four stars. And then after everyone got on board they gave Eminem Show five stars as sort of retroactive apology to Mathers LP.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 24 March 2011 15:28 (fourteen years ago)

Pitchfork didn't review Marshall Mathers at all and then gave Eminem Show a 9.1

Allmusic guide and Onion A/V club rated Eminem Show higher

Happens all the time. (See: most British reviewers, their initial reaction to (What's the Story) Morning Glory and how they tackled Be Here Now.)

ned, do you mean definitely maybe and morning glory? because i remember the latter being hailed as something a lot more than it was, and people having their eyes open, for the most part, to be here now's flaws

on the other hand, i was, like, ten for morning glory. there's a guardian article about the phenomenon -- i'm actually of the opinion that glory is pish and be here now slightly less annoying pish, so i'm okay with it, mind.
