As the thread says; please do not recommend bands that you love except for "that one questionable song" because odds are I will stumble across that one song and think you are trying to passive-aggressively tell me to stay the fuck away from your pure music (aka "The Christian Death Effect").

I think a lot of the pre-mainstream Paradise Lost albums fit the bill here.

I don't really know how much gothy metal would count as racist though? Sure, there's Burzum etc but even he didn't have racist lyrics in his music, just dumbshit opinions in his views.
Are you looking for any particular types of metal?

nothing in particular
I put that disclaimer on there because whenever I venture into some of these subgenres, invariably someone will point me towards some band/song that drops a really horrible n-bomb and, when I point it out, they say either "oh I never noticed that" or "but it's satirical, they don't really mean that" without pausing to consider whether they are actually right or if that actually makes it any better to hear out of the blue

maybe check out Virus - "carheart" is their best IMO - ex Ved Buens Ende - kinda Scott Walker / Bauhaus / Jesus Lizard weirdness with nowt but a wee nod to their metal origins.

Jesu and Alcest I guess? Broadrick's Pale Sketcher project is also awesome but really not metal at all despite his lineage.

dude I fucking love Therion but I wasn't sure if namechecking them as a touchstone would have drawn derision or not

Oh, yeah. The Gathering.
pretty reliably great band in my opinion. they covered a Current 93 song ("Lucifer over London") a while ago.
