I didn't want to clog up the Faust vs. Neu! thread with this discussion but I don't see any threads about these in search so here's an all-purpose one where you can tell stories about the songs you've played (and had skipped) or just general discussion about how these things work.
For instance, I really would like to know why some album tracks get omitted (e.g. a Black Grape album without the singles, WTF!?), and why the assortment of albums seem to be totally scattershot for some groups. I suspect this is all licensing garbage but considering that it costs virtually nothing to store the song why would any record company hold out on this??

I think that the proprietor of the establishment that houses the jukebox gets to pick what selections are available. At least, that's the way it seems to work around here with the "touch tunes" boxes I find in places.

The classic articles about this, btw:

I always feel compelled to play a few songs when people load these things up with country music, so I once played both versions of "Yeah" by LCD Soundsystem in a row. The first one started to annoy most of the people in the bar (basically, anyone who wasn't me or one of my friends), who I could hear asking "how long does this go??" In fact from what I could gather she may have been complaining about it the whole time. As you may know the song just keeps building and building and gets crazier, but if you don't like the first few minutes you REALLY won't like the last few. It faded out, someone had said to the bartender "thank God!!", and then suddenly "Yeah (Pretentious Version)" came on and people were flipping out, and the bartender actually UNPLUGGED the jukebox (apparently, he couldn't find the remote), losing all the songs that were programmed into it before in the process. I did feel bad about that. About a year later I played "Yeah" (just the standard version) at a different bar and it absolutely killed, I felt like I was at the mecca of white guy dancing. Guess you gotta get your $1 or $2 worth.

xp I think they get to choose what's on the box but the 'super search' seems to be the same everywhere, that's what I'm referring to
playing hour and a half eno songs in a bar is just misanthropic really

i played super roots 7 (boriginal) at a sleepy/divey gay bar. went out to the patio to smoke and as it started this older gentleman said "what's that sound? its like i have a hearing aid and it's broken."

feel kinda bad about that one tbh. mostly i will go either classic rock/punk or soul/disco. it is kinda fun when your songs come on but not that fun.
