"I think a lesbian artist that been in the game for a minute [HE ACTUALLY SAID THIS], we need to embrace the younger generation and give them an opportunity to stand next to us and do great, great music."
― gr8080, Friday, 18 March 2011 19:28 (fourteen years ago)
DiS: First off, I just want to tell you I’ve been a Wu Tang fan for like 17 years so, it's amazing to get to talk to you.
Raekwon: Ah so you been there since day one huh?
DiS: Yeah - pretty much man, since I was like 13 or something.
R: That's good stuff man, thank you.
VERY professional interview

He really meant 'labian'
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 18 March 2011 19:30 (fourteen years ago)
this interview is really gross
― J0rdan S., Friday, 18 March 2011 19:31 (fourteen years ago)
Bieber probably thinks Raekwon's Chinese

yeah, it seems like it almost has to be — if you try to follow the thought he is expressing in that sentence, 'lesbian (or whatever word it was) artist who has been in the game for a minute' seems more like it's him talking about himself...?

or the based god
― J0rdan S., Friday, 18 March 2011 19:49 (fourteen years ago)
one possible, more sensible reading: "I think, all us bein' artists that been in the game for a minute, we need to" etc etc — ?
― SBlendor in the grass (bernard snowy), Friday, 18 March 2011 19:50 (fourteen years ago)
when has raekwon ever made sense

How could it be a mistranscription? It sez [HE ACTUALLY SAID THIS] right next to it?

rza explains it in one of his books. i think it comes from some old kung fu movie, although i can't remember specifics and i cannot be bothered looking it up. :D
― Nult AGL (a hoy hoy), Friday, 18 March 2011 20:31 (fourteen years ago)
I would guess that he said "I would think, just being an artist that been in the game for a minute" &c

it's not in the Wu-Tang Manual. is it in RZA's recent bio? I've watched my share of kung-fu movies and never come across this one.

Lathleen:How did you get the name Raekwon the chef?
Raekwon:I use to be a 5 percenter, I went from a 5 percenter to being a Muslim. I had gotten my name from a couple of friends, it came from back in my early days when I was seeking knowledge that I wasn’t able to get out of school at the time. We wasn’t getting a lot learnt from school at the time, they weren’t paying attention to us. I wanted to search for the higher plane of knowledge and I went to that side of it. The nation has taught me a lot.

― flopson, Friday, 18 March 2011 21:37 (fourteen years ago)
I just want to know where it comes from since it's such a random word and every other Wu-Tang moniker has some complex story/rationale/explanation behind it. "his friends made it up" doesn't really cut it, no.

people can make up names shakey.
also: study your lessons, you lack knowledge of self.

From here:http://books.google.com/books?id=XkCncJ7j744C
Raekwon, who was named after the chef character in old kung fu movies, not only literally cooked very well (' 'He was known for cooking up some really good fish,'' writes RZA [20]), but he also had "flavor," as RZA writes-- "He had the Gumby haircut, the Gucci shoes, and he had the freshest slang of anybody" (21).
― taco al pastorius (Steve Shasta), Friday, 18 March 2011 21:40 (fourteen years ago)

Random Raekwon anecdote: My parents who are in their mid 70's had a meal at Carmine's last year and sat unknowingly a table away from him and his date. They shared a lovely conversation about life and New York and only found out he was famous after they left when a flabbergasted waitress asked "did you know who that was??!" I died when they told me.
