Is ILM too metal?

There seems to be a ton of metal threads here at any given time. As a supporter of the dark arts, I for one enjoy this, but I could see how this might cheese off some people who don't even like metal in an ironic fashion. So, let's genuflect together...

Too metal? No such thing! Real men play on 10, you wimp! 30
There is, in fact, too much metal here but I don't think it's a bad thing or anything, just leave me alone. 21

there's way more rap threads and i wouldnt complain about that and i dont think anyone has ever complained about metal threads.
I posed the question of a I Love Metal board (with the rolling thread for promo talk to stay on ILM)last year, some wanted it some didn't and that was that.

there's a lot of discussion here of genres I don't have a lot of interest in and I don't think it's worthwhile to tell people to post less or start fewer threads about a subject. however, it seems like there are a ton of threads about metal or metal subgenres, as opposed to threads about metal bands or specific topics relating to metal, which seems kind of odd in relation to other strains of discussion on ILM.

some dude, Friday, 18 March 2011 21:47 (fourteen years ago)

I just don't really understand the meta-complaint threads, I think.

original bgm, Friday, 18 March 2011 21:56 (fourteen years ago)

metal threads die quickly as other threads replace them on new answers really quickly. a sub-board would go at a slower pace and you could have polls/.threads on bands/albums while the rolling thread stays on ILM. It works perfectly for the footy board doing exactly that.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 18 March 2011 21:56 (fourteen years ago)

bookmark the threads. what's the big deal? didn't we do this already?

(however I have always found rolling metal to be very hospitable to me popping in and asking questions abt old shit)

"it seems like there are a ton of threads about metal or metal subgenres, as opposed to threads about metal bands or specific topics relating to metal, which seems kind of odd in relation to other strains of discussion on ILM"

I think this is why metal is great... also it's not really dissimilar to a lot of electronic music which is also more scene/genre than auteur driven.

No point in starting a thread on a band that will get 10 posts if lucky.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 31 March 2011 15:33 (fourteen years ago)

Yes there is, because that is a more useful means of categorization, cataloging, making searchable. I was looking through Dino Jr. threads last night and there was one that was like 15 posts long and well, whatever, that's how long it was. I read it and it served my purpose. It was a lot better than having one ilxor post about Dino Jr. "Man, Bug is great - I hope Mascis and Barlow keep playing together for the next 20 years", then another guy be like "Has anyone heard this new band called the pixies yet?", and then someone else being like "Sonic Youth are the quintessential independent band, they'll never sell out!" on Rolling Indie 1988.

kkvgz, Thursday, 31 March 2011 15:40 (fourteen years ago)

So, if I'm looking for information about Blut Aus Nord, I could look for the Blut Aus Nord thread, instead of searching by post and coming up with every mention of Blut Aus Nord in every metalhead's year-end list and every newly updated list of poll nominations.

kkvgz, Thursday, 31 March 2011 15:46 (fourteen years ago)

Which, all of those lists are fucking noise to me, search-wise.

kkvgz, Thursday, 31 March 2011 15:46 (fourteen years ago)

there is no point in starting a thread on every band in existence. Dinosaur Jr are a big band therefore have their own threads for the band as well as threads/polls for each album. You cant do that for every band.

I agree the Rolling Metal Promo©* Thread does move very quickly and everything gets lost in it, one of the reasons there's a compromise of rolling subgenres threads since the overwhelming majority of ilxors objected to a separate board, but if every band and album got a thread of it's own, there would be way more complaints.

I don't get this at all. Who complains about threads popping up about a small band, getting half a dozen posts, then quietly slipping of new answers into the archive to be revived again with the next release/tour/whatever? Isn't that how it's supposed to work. The only way this would be annoying is if someone decided to be an asshole and create a thousand threads a day about every metal band he knew.

Something happens with a band you like. You have something to say/share. Bump or start a thread about them. No-one's going to complain about that other than people who complain about everything.
